Spring is here! And with that comes a warning about Leptospirosis, a disease caused by infection with Leptospira bacteria.

All dogs are at risk of leptospirosis, regardless of age, breed, lifestyle, geographic location, time of year, and other factors. The following situations can increase that risk:

➡Exposure to or drinking from slow-moving or stagnant water sources, like ponds, rivers, lakes, or streams
➡ Roaming on rural properties (because of exposure to potentially infected wildlife or farm animals or urine-contaminated water sources)
➡ Exposure to wild animals (especially rodents) or farm animals, even if in the backyard
➡ Contact with other dogs (such as in urban areas, dog parks, or boarding or training facilities)

Lulu wants to let everyone know how to protect your pets from poisonous hazards in the house!

Pets are naturally curious, which can sometimes get them into trouble. One of the most common emergencies veterinarians see is toxin exposure. Knowing about common toxins and taking steps to prevent exposure can help keep your pets safe and healthy.

Each year, the ASPCA Animal Poison Control Center identifies the top toxins that harm pets. The list includes many everyday items. Over-the-counter medications, like ibuprofen, acetaminophen, and vitamins, are the most common culprits. Human foods, such as grapes, coffee, alcohol, and sugar-free gum containing xylitol, pose a serious threat to pets. Prescription medications, chocolate, and flavored veterinary products, such as chewable medications, are also dangerous when ingested.

Plants and fungi, including lilies and toxic mushrooms, are frequent dangers, as are household items such as batteries and preservative packets. Rodenticides and insecticides can cause severe poisoning if eaten, and recreational drugs, such as ma*****na and psychedelic mushrooms, are increasingly involved in poisoning cases.

If you suspect your pet has been exposed to a toxin, immediate action can save their life. Start by calling the pet poison hotline or the closest emergency animal hospital.

Do NOT make your pet vomit unless under pet poison helpline or veterinary guidance. If the toxin is on your pet’s fur or skin, wash it off with mild soap (like dawn) and water as soon as possible. Prompt care can make all the difference.

has sprung and allergy season has already started off strong the past few weeks!

Callie is a common skin allergy flare up we see with redness, swelling, patchy hair loss, and lichenification (thicken pigmented skin on her belly from chronic itch/irritation/inflammation which can happen very quickly!) We commonly see ear infections along with this as well.

If your pet is red, itchy, having hair loss, or shaking their head; they may have allergies and be experiencing the itch/inflammation which leads to the skin and ear infections we commonly see everyday this time of year. Please schedule an appointment with us to help them be comfortable!

Callie's cytology revealed not only a bacterial infection on her skin but also a yeast infection. She was started on antibiotics and topicals for her infections and allergy medications to make her more comfortable and less red and itchy.

As we approach the start of kitten season, Rodney wants to remind everyone that make amazing companions!

Black colored cats and dogs are the most overlooked at the shelter or of the litters as their colors/markings do not "stand out." "Black Dog Syndrome" or "Black Cat Syndrome," is where they are overlooked for adoption in favor of lighter-colored pets, potentially leading to longer stays and higher euthanasia rates.

Please consider looking at the black colored animals when looking to adopt or even ask the staff for the most over looked pet or the longest resident! They are not bad pets for being at the shelter longer, just over looked because of their color.

Do you know what the MOST PLANT we see?

LILIES!!!!

That's right, those beauties can be extremely deadly to cats!
Even brushing up against one and then grooming off a small amount of pollen or lapping the water in the vase is potentially deadly!

Early signs of lily toxicity in cats include decreased activity level, drooling, vomiting, and loss of appetite. These symptoms start 0 to 12 hours after ingestion. Signs of kidney damage start about 12 to 24 hours after ingestion and include increased urination and dehydration. Kidney failure occurs within 24 to 72 hours, leading to death if the pet isn’t treated. Early veterinary treatment greatly improves the cat’s prognosis. However, if treatment is delayed by 18 hours or more after ingestion, the cat will generally have irreversible kidney failure.

There are a few lily species that can make your cat sick but not cause kidney failure (Peruvian Lily, Lily of the Valley, Calla Lily, Peace Lily, Flame Lily).

DO NOT BRING THESE FLOWERS INTO YOUR HOUSE IF YOU OWN A CAT!

If your pet has been exposed to a true or has ingested part of a lily plant (stem, leaves, flowers, pollen, and even the water in a vase) please seek veterinary intervention immediately. The sooner the treatment is started, the better outcome for your cat.

Today is since we lost an hour of sleep yesterday and we wanted to discuss how to help you puppy get in their naps! Naps for puppies (just like kids) make them a calmer, more behaved puppy.

This is some good info from about crate naps:

Remember, when you have a baby you put them in crib for regular naps. You put them in the crib so they don’t roll out and hurt themselves. And they eventually progress to big boy/girl bed with longer time between naps.

A crate is a crib for a puppy for regular naps. If a puppy does NOT get regular naps they will turn YOU and the HOUSE into their chew toy! They will have more accidents, more separation anxiety and more behavioral problems.

PUPPIES NEED REGULAR NAPS! After walks, after play, after exercise… stick your pup in the crate for a nap! This helps them learn to switch off after adrenal.

When food is being prepared and when children are eating – put them in the crate so they learn how to behave around food. They learn to switch off so they do not counter surf and mug the children for their food.

Crates are a GAME CHANGER! When used properly when your dog is a puppy you will have next to no issues in the house. If used as a punishment (used incorrectly) and it wont’ help you.

Clover the 12 week old puppy got her next distemper/parvo booster today!

BUT DO YOU KNOW WHAT DISTEMPER is?
Distemper is a contagious and serious disease caused by a virus that attacks not only the respiratory tract, but also the GI, skin, and nervous system of puppies and dogs!
Yes your dog can catch this from another unvaccinated dog, but more commonly this virus is also found in wildlife such as foxes, coyotes, raccoons, and skunks. Your pet can catch this from airborne (sneezes or coughing), from sharing a water bowl (common at dog parks right?), and mother dogs can also pass this disease to their puppies if they are not vaccinated prior to pregnancy.

Symptoms are variable since this virus affects many organ systems: pus-like discharge from eyes, fever, nasal discharge, coughing, lethargy, vomiting, not eating, thickened footpads, circling behavior or head tilt, muscle twitches, seizures, or paralysis. In wildlife, canine distemper virus infection clinically resembles RABIES.

There is no cure for distemper and it is if often fatal. Dogs that survive usually have permanent nervous system damage/deficits.

Vaccines are crucial in prevention as well as avoiding wildlife and unvaccinated dogs. A series of vaccines are given to puppies until they are 16 weeks or older to ensure the last vaccine is boostered AFTER maternal antibodies have faded to stimulate the puppies own immune system. Adult dogs only need a series of 2 vaccines (3 weeks apart). After they are adults, the vaccine lasts for 3 years and also includes protection against Parvo virus.
