Noodles is VERY concerned about her and is very self-conscious about it!
Dr. Heather helped her out with a dental cleaning and extraction of a bad tooth.

How she has and doesn't have to worry about her owner's reaction to her breath!

Little Darwin we seen many times while growing up for upset stomach with vomiting and diarrhea! 🤢💩
He has done well on a high fiber diet with probiotics. Some dogs that have IBD (inflammatory bowel disease) can start out this way and need a special diet to keep their tummies happy. Some dogs need intestinal biopsies and need daily medication to keep their GI signs under control.

If your pet is having any GI upset, please let us know and we will discuss an option that is best for your pet. Many times we may try up to even 4 different diets before we find one that works best for your pet.

Now is the time to request medication refills or schedule an appointment to discuss your pets anxiety during noises such as thunder and fireworks. Depending on each individual pet’s response and each family we will discuss multiple options with you. If we have more time BEFORE the “event” we can discuss training/desensitization that can be started and maybe able to avoid medications for some pets.

Please call us now! Ensure their chips are working and updated with your number and they are wearing tags during the entire week with your contact info.

“Oh rubbish....our nails don’t hurt when they grow.”
I hear you, but let’s look at why trainers, groomers, vets (really anyone who works closely with dogs) will urge you to please trim your dog’s nails or “claws”.

It isn’t always nice to hear but it is an important message.

What happens when your dogs nails are too long?
The toes can start to splay, they can spread our unnaturally.
This affects how the foot can move and place itself.

Did your dog’s toes once sit neatly and tightly together?
Have you noticed they now sit wider apart?
Notice those bigger gaps?
The foot isn't as compact as it one was.

Over time.... the toes can twist and they may have a new way of moving or walking, one their body isn’t built for and it can be very subtle and tricky to spot.

That new movement affects joints and muscles all the way up the leg.
Eventually.... it can impact the hips.
The gait can be affected as well as their whole walking style.

Why does this happen?
Dog nails don’t retract.
They stay long (and for long nails concrete walking may not help at all...it just means more pain).
Long nails can’t sink into hard surfaces.
The toes bend... the joints strain and the foot compensates in unnatural ways.

Will they show pain?
Some dogs will..... many don’t or can’t.
That doesn't mean they’re not in a lot of discomfort.

Pain often shows in unexpected ways...unwanted behaviour, movement and posture.
Pain that is preventable becomes a welfare issue.

We owe it to our dogs to help them live (as much as possible) a pain free life.

Yes...nail care can be hard.
Yes, some dogs hate it and progress can be snail pace slow.

However....we owe it to our dogs to not give up on them or their nails.

Jack would like to know your favorite for ... He may be a little biased! (Even if you consider it not a bourbon)

Even our kitties still come to the vet for annual check ups. And yes, they are required to have a rabies vaccine up to date per the State Of North Carolina, even if they are indoor only.

Shanaya was diagnosed with a heart murmur at her first puppy appointment YIKES!

This is a sound that is heard when listening to the heart with a stethoscope that indicates turbulent blood flow. (Myxomatous) Mitral Valve Disease is the most common acquired heart disease in dogs and accounts for > 70% of all canine heart diseases. This is much more common in small breed dogs. When a small breed dog has a left sided systolic heart murmur, 99% of these dogs have mitral valve disease.

The valves that keep blood flowing one way in the heart start to leak as they have degenerative changes. As a result, blood flows both forwards and backwards (regurgitation). In early disease, there is no change to the size of the heart. As the disease progresses from the back flow of blood in the heart, the heart chambers can become enlarged and the heart beats less effectively. An ultrasound of the heart (echocardiogram) can be performed to reveal the cause of this heart murmur and is always recommended with our local cardiologist. This is important to workup prior to anesthesia such as spay and neuter.

Kiba came in for a wound on her back leg he obtained running outside and we administered wound care to clean the wound, antibiotics, and pain medications.

If your pet has a wound, it is important to have it seen so we can treat the wound prior to an infection taking over and to ensure your pet is comfortable from pain.
