Today marks 11 years since I adopted Lucy, also her 12th birthday. Lucy is the genesis of Fido & Family. She’s the first dog I ever trained and the reason I am so passionate about the dog-human bond. I often refer to her as my “doggy soul mate” and my husband has coined her the household “behavioral standard.” I hope to help each one of you develop the bond I have found with Lucy.

Slade and her mom are rocking crate training! She is learning that crate = amazing things.

Slade suffers from separation anxiety and has an appetite for the couch when her mom is gone. One of the ways we are addressing this is by crate training her.

I think crate training is a life skill all dogs should have, even if they don’t use it every day.

🐾 Wondering why skipping the 🐶 dog park 🌳 might be a good choice? Here's why:

1️⃣ Individual Attention: One-on-one time strengthens your bond and ensures you can focus on your dog's needs and body language signals.

2️⃣ Avoiding Risks: Bypass potential altercations with unfamiliar dogs or the spread of diseases and parasites. Conflict with other dog owners can happen, too, when the dynamics of the dogs in the park aren’t matching up and facilitating appropriate interactions. This is too often the case. 🐾

3️⃣ Controlled Environment: Choose the surroundings and stimuli, minimising unexpected stressors or distractions so that your dog can make better choices.

Pictured, Mabel (now over the rainbow bridge), who I adopted in college. She was a 12 year old former hunting dog who had never lived inside. The transition was not easy! She jumped on my coffee table when I brought her home. She dug in the trash if left alone out of her crate. She slipped out the door and took herself hunting on more than one occasion. But she was so, so great.

Hi! I’m Claudia Tuttle and I’m the owner/trainer of Fido & Family Dog Training LLC. I have loved dog training ever since I trained my dog, Lucy, for my senior project in high school (the small dog in the picture). I went to college for Veterinary Technology and became a licensed veterinary technician. I loved vet med, but remained drawn to behavior.
