Want to know why spaying your female dogs is so important?

THIS. RIGHT. HERE.

On the right, you will see what a normal, healthy uterus looks like when a dog is spayed.

On the left, you will see what a uterus with pyometra looks like. Pyometra is a serious, and potentially fatal, uterine infection. This is a picture from TODAY courtesy of Dr. Evans at The Critter Connection. She performed a spay on our foster dog, Holly.

Holly is a 6-8 year old gal who came to us from an abuse/neglect situation. It is likely that she never received any sort of vet care prior to being a FOALC dog. She likely would have died had we not intervened.

Holly has a potential adopter so we hope to be able to post an update soon with forever home news!

Before this winter storm hit, Becky Lucas made TWO transport trips to Ohio to take these sweet souls (plus a few more!) from Boone and Lincoln counties to larger animal rescues. One dog, Heaven, has even already been adopted! You’ll see her pictured with her forever family! ❤️

We partner with larger rescues in more metropolitan areas because they simply do not have the stray population we have here. They also have a much larger adoption base. By working with larger rescues, it helps us save more lives and decreases our long term costs.

We are SO thankful for our partnerships as we simply could not do what we do without them!

“Why do you care so much about animals? Money could be better spent on people!”

“You care more about animals than you do about children.”

“Why waste money trying to save an animal when you can just take it out back and put it out of its misery?”

“You’re wasting your time trying to change things. Nobody is ever going to care about animals around here”

These are all things that have been said to us over the years. Our response is always this: we don’t just help animals, we help people too.

We help people to be able to keep their beloved pets when they fall on hard times. We help people who are dealing with stray animals disrupting their lives. We help people that started with good intentions who quickly became overwhelmed with too many mouths to feed. We help people to be responsible pet owners by vaccinating and spay/neutering their animals.

We help people on the daily. It just often isn’t seen that way. Investing in animal welfare organizations doesn’t just help animals, it helps our entire community, including all the people in it.

Excellent information from our sister rescue! We have several fosters outside that we are preparing with insulated house, heat lamps, etc.

However, we would love to find them indoor foster homes, even if only on a temporary basis during the upcoming cold snap.

If you would be willing to foster, please send us a message and we’ll be in touch!

Since our inception in May 2024, we have saved the lives of over 75 Lincoln County animals (plus a few more out of county that we just couldn’t overlook).

We’ve helped multiple Lincoln County residents get their pets spayed and neutered at no cost to the owners.

We have vaccinated a multitude of puppies to prevent outbreaks of parvo and distemper.

We’ve held a pet food drive and distributed hundreds of pounds of cat and dog food to needy residents.

We developed a partnership with our county health department and were awarded ARPA funding in order to (hopefully) create some form of animal shelter in Lincoln County.

All of this was accomplished in only 7 months time (while dealing with the devastating fire) and NONE of it could have been possible without the help of our faithful supporters and financial donors.

If you have helped us in any way, please know we deeply appreciate it. Though we may currently be facing a stumbling block, we know that y’all have our back and that we will persevere.

Please keep spreading the word about our rescue, donating as you can, and sharing our posts as often as possible. We look forward to 2025 and all the promise that it brings.

Happy New Year, everyone!

This is a long, but very important post. Please read until the end.

We hope everyone had a Merry Christmas, but we unfortunately have some not great news to share.

Due to the cost of rehabbing the house on Blue Lick, our project is now on hold. We are unsure if it will proceed any further at this time.

Our estimates from professionals have shown it will take around $22,000 to get the house in order. We were only given $35,000 in total to start our facility. As we do not own the house (it is owned by the Lincoln County Economic Development Authority), this would mean using up $22,000 of our funding that we would never see any kind of return on. Should this property not work out (safety has always been a concern), we would be investing all of that money into something we do not own. Financially and ethically, this isn’t something we are willing to do. The money was awarded to help animals, not to rehab a home.

We have presented this information to the EDA and asked them to contribute $20,000 to fix up the house since they will continue to own it. As of right now, they are unsure they want to do this and have asked us to not spend any more money on the shelter project at Blue Lick while it’s under consideration.

Currently, we have already spent several thousand on buying windows/doors and paying to have them installed. This was done in attempt to secure the property and prevent any future destruction.

We also spent much time and effort cleaning out the house that was full of trash and debris. In preparation, we have already purchased kennels, insulated dog houses, and thousands of dollars in supplies as we found amazing deals over Black Friday. This is all being stored at volunteer homes.

Because of all of this, we do hope the EDA will see this as a worthy investment and allow us to continue, provided they are able to contribute the additional funding. However, their budget is also small so it may not be a wise financial move for them either. Thus, we’re currently in a holding pattern.

We will provide updates as we have them, but for now, our efforts will be focused on our new partnership with the Lincoln County Health Department and providing spay/neuter services. We remain closed to intakes at this time.

Thank you to everyone that has supported us this far, and we hope to be able to share happy news in the future.

We are still trying to find homes for these five scruffy babies! All have been wormed and have had two rounds of vaccines. They are SO sweet and laid back and would make excellent family pets. We do not currently have these dogs as our fosters homes are full, but can connect you with who does. If interested, please send us a message!

We are SO happy to announce our partnership with the Lincoln County Health Dept WV! Our first collaborative spay/neuter trip happened today!

Along with The Critter Connection, we are now able to provide some veterinary services IN COUNTY and we will be making regular spay/neuter trips as well.

We are in the process of applying for the West Virginia Spay Neuter Grant Program which will hopefully bring much needed funding for spay/neuter services for Lincoln County animals. Through this grant program, residents can get their pets spayed/neutered for free! Look for future posts next year to see if we received the funding/how much is awarded!

We do need help paying for this round of spay/neuter services as they aren’t covered by any grant money. If you can donate, click the link below! Checks can also be mailed to FOALC, PO Box 24, Griffithsville WV, 25521.

We at FOALC will be taking a break from social media for the next week so that we may enjoy a much needed rest and some time with our families. As you know, rescue never really takes a break so we’ll still be caring for our fosters on the daily and may even have a big announcement coming soon! We hope everyone has a wonderful holiday season and can’t wait to show you our plans for the new year!

Jenny is ready to find her forever home! She has made amazing progress since we rescued her and will make someone a wonderful best friend!

Jenny will require someone with patience and gentleness. She is still very hesitant with strangers and does not trust easily, both are completely understandable given her history of neglect. Once she warms up to you, though, she gives SO much love and affection.

Because of this, Jenny needs a home with no small children. Small kiddos don’t fully understand boundaries, so for their safety and Jenny’s, it’s best if only older children are around her.

Jenny is spayed, up to date on all vaccines, and is treated monthly for fleas/ticks. She is 1-2 years old and around 40 pounds. She gets along great with other dogs with the proper introduction. We are unsure how she would be with cats as she has not been around them much.

If you’re interested in adopting Jenny, please message us to schedule a meet and greet. Her adoption fee is $100 and all medical records will be provided.

Please share to help Jenny find the perfect t home so she can start fresh in the new year!
