Since the news is now public, I would like to address the situation several folks have asked me about concerning the avian flu outbreak in Santa Rosa. JP Julie Peacock Meyer is a devoted member of the animal rescue community who has helped countless animals and specializes in taking in hospice dogs. She and her husband, Mike, also adore their winged companions: geese, guinea pigs, chickens, peacocks, etc. They have selflessly cared for and loved numerous animals, including birds for over two decades. This is an utterly heartbreaking situation, and they immediately took action to figure out what was happening.
If you own birds and they exhibit symptoms of illness and/or suddenly perish, then please be especially vigilant right now. UC Davis will perform a necropsy (the carcass must be refrigerated and NOT frozen) to determine the cause.
An avian flu infection has been confirmed in a backyard, non-commercial flock of birds in southwest Santa Rosa, raising alarm in the county’s farmbelt, where poultry producers were devastated by a series of deadly outbreaks that began nearly a year ago.
