My nearly deaf weim named Hotstuff was made instantly blind on Dec. 19, 2014 when Dr. Filipe Espinheira committed veterinary malpractice when he mistakenly removed Hotstuff's unshaved good eye rather than his prepped (shaved) bad eye. Hotstuff's cancer was in remission & he did not need this additional burden. This wrong side eye surgery took place at LSU Veterinary Teaching Hospital. LSU did not
require this board certified surgeon to be licensed in their state. In fact, Dr. Espinheira was not licensed in any U.S. state. LSU did not require that a surgery safety checklist be used in surgeries performed there. Please share this page and hopefully we can make other pet owners aware of questions that need to be asked before their pets undergo surgery. I tried all I could for my baby to acclimate him. He received 24/7 care at home. Over the last couple of days, however, I saw a significant decline in him. He would pace but be fearful of moving around, he would whine, bark and even howl, so much that I could not even comfort him. We believe he had canine cognitive disorder brought on by the instant blindness. We tried anti anxiety meds, but I had to end his suffering on Jan. 14, 2015.
