Beware of these toxins in bloom! Here are five spring plants to be aware of for your pet:

Daffodils: Daffodils contain lycorine, which can cause vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal pain, and even cardiac arrhythmias. All parts of the daffodil are considered toxic to dogs, cats, and horses, but the bulbs in particular are toxic.

Tulips: Tulips contain a toxin called tulipalin A and B, which can cause vomiting, diarrhea, depression, and even convulsions in dogs, cats, and horses. The bulbs in particular contain large amounts of toxin.

Hyacinth: Hyacinths contain oxalic acid that can cause vomiting, diarrhea, tremors and even respiratory depression if ingested. The bulbs and blooms are toxic to dogs, cats, and horses.
Crocus: Crocus are poisonous for dogs, cats, and horses. They contain colchicine and other alkaloids. Effects include bloody vomiting and diarrhea, shock, multi-organ damage, and bone marrow suppression.

Lilies: All parts of the lily plant are toxic to pets, and its toxic principles are currently unknown. Lilies can cause severe kidney failure in cats. While particularly toxic to cats, some varieties can be safe for dogs and horses.

Texas Bluebonnet: The famous Texas bluebonnet contains quinolizidine alkaloids that can cause tremors, incoordination, agitation, collapse, seizures, and birth defects in dogs, cats, cows, and horses. The pods and seeds are particularly toxic.

It’s always a good idea to do your research when planting in your yard and to supervise any animals when they are outdoors. If you suspect your dog, cat, or other furry friend has ingested a poisonous plant, contact your veterinarian immediately. For more information, look at the ASPCA website.

Hi, I’m Paul, and I have a problem with loving animals.

It didn’t start out this way.

It began with 1 little dog named Pandora…..then a weiner dog named Pip….then I decided to become a veterinary technician.

After that, it started to get out of control.

I conned my mother-in-law into adopting the pet I was assigned in school.

Then there was Rosie who would “die without your help.”

Along came a dog “just for me” named Eliie (she is way more interested in the kids then me).

Then 2 cats that showed up on our doorstep.

Then another stray cat that “almost froze to death” in the great TX freeze of ‘21.

A cat adopted from a foster group because he is “a real snuggler” (Ruckus is indeed the snuggliest cat I have ever met).

And, last but not least, Finn was adopted because poor Ellie was lonely after losing her last doggy friend.

In between all those there have been countless frogs, lizards, and pocket pets. My wife, Martha, asks “is it available?” every time I send her a picture of a cute pet that comes into the hospital I work at (NO, it is not available, These are peoples pets!).

Before we moved into our new house located on 6 acres of land, plans were already being put into place by my family…..chickens, ducks, goats, donkeys, and maybe an emu are in my future.

I just can't say no. I am incapable! Part of the reason I started this business is so I could love on other peoples pets so I didn't have to keep acquiring more, and it has helped a little.

Now, I am asking all of you to help me feed my pet addiction. Let me watch your pets when you go out of town! It will, of course, help them by giving them someone who is fully trained and worries about your pets as much as you do, but it will also help feed my addiction to pets so I do not have to go broke owning every pet that I come across. Please, HELP ME!

As we move into the holiday season, I would like to share a few pet related bits of advice.
1) Traveling with pets can be very stressful on us and them. Call Paben Premium Pet Care, LLC to watch your pet in the comfort of its own home. I have very limited availability left for Thanksgiving and Christmas is already booking fast. Contact me today to book your dates!

2) Cats will climb your Christmas tree. I suggest you make sure it is lashed down or secured in some manner to prevent tipping.

3) Your pets should continue to eat whatever they normally eat. If a dog or cat's food is changed suddenly or new foods are introduced, it can cause moderate to severe stomach upset. Feeding a pet bones can lead to a blockage or worse yet, a tear in the digestive system. If you want to give them a special treat, try vegetables (no onions or garlic) with no fat or seasoning on them, trust me they will think they are getting something amazing.

CONTEST TIME!!

Small Confession....I have nicknames for all of my clients. Sometimes it's their pets' names, sometimes it is something else. For instance this month I have done work for Anna Ashley, Milo N R***r, BP, Chicken Dogs, and The Bagel (to name just a few). My wife and I (and sometimes the kids) are the only ones that ever hear these names and sometimes she is the one that makes them up. If you could pick the nickname I call you what would it be? If you have/had a nickname for me what is it? Best answer to either question will recieve $15 off any service! And since my wife comes up with most of the nicknames, Martha Paben will be the judge. Answer in the comments below.

This looks like a good place to board some dogs in the fairly near future.....maybe enough room for some goats, donkeys, and chickens to wander around as well. What do you all think? Martha Paben

Just an FYI. I will be unavailable for any services and likely incommunicado from 8/6-8/16.

Also, my clientele is expanding so if you want to be sure that you can get me for whatever dates you need please contact me as far in advance as possible. I would love to make myself available to everyone at the same time but really only have the capacity for ~3 clients at a time.

Stay well, and remember, be the person your pet thinks you are!

Just some house keeping notes...

Unfortunately, until gas prices drop below $3.50/gal I will be charging anyone outside of Gunter a $10/day fuel surcharge. If you already have appointments booked and I didn't say anything about it already then you are exempt this time around. It will be in effect starting with any new bookings from today on.

I am 100000% booked for the period between July 1st and July 5th. I'm sorry if anyone needs pet sitting in that date range.

I will be unavailable between August 6th-16th

I hope everyone has a great summer and the amount of support and kind words have been astounding. If I have watched your pets and you were pleased with my service please tell your friends. Word of mouth is the best advertisement around!

And here are some funny cartoons....
