February is National Pet Dental Health Month! Check out Clever Critters Trainer Sydney with her dog Miko. They are working on Cooperative Care with Teeth Brushing!
Dental Health is extremely important for our pets, and cooperative care training helps us to have willing participants! By teaching your pet how to cooperate and participate in their care not only does it make the care more effective, but also fun!
Teeth brushing, as with any cooperative care, can be done by:
1. Providing choice to participate
2. Promoting consent for interaction
3. Appropriately socialize early to handling and equipment
4. Training and behavior modification using Force Free and Fear Free methods
5. Actively practice the skills daily to build routine and memory recall
We can help our pets to feel more comfortable in their care, including dental care, to achieve a healthier pet both physically and mentally. All it takes is some teamwork!
To learn more about how to brush your dog's teeth and other cooperative care skills reach out to Clever Critters!

We're continuing National Train Your Dog Month by promoting Take a Breath by Dr. Karen Overall, applied animal behaviorist and veterinary behaviorist!
Take a Breath is just what it sounds like, teaching your dog to breathe! "But my dog already knows how to breathe. Why do I need to teach this?" Great question!
Just like in humans breathing can be used for promoting calm and relaxation. When our pets are stressed, their memory is affected, and they cannot learn well. We utilize this exercise to assist in biofeedback, or awareness of how the body responds to stress. We can help our pets achieve a relaxed state which promotes better attentiveness for learning. To do this, taking a breath will assist in lowering blood pressure, slowing the heart rate, and regulating breathing.
In short, teaching your dog to take a breath could help them learn to self-regulate when they are overwhelmed. When a dog is focusing on their breathing, they are in turn focusing on relaxation and calm attentiveness to their environment and you.
Take a Breath:
-Is Self-Calming
-Promotes Relaxation
-Puts the Dog in a Better State to Learn
-Reduces Stress and Anxiety
-Lowers Blood Pressure
-Helps Dogs Who Struggle with Over-Arousal
By teaching our dogs to breathe on cue, we can help them relax better in stressful situations, such as car rides, at the vet, around triggers, and even when they are super excited!
