I wanted to put up additional information about our fight against Ticks, since we seem to be winning. This spring we started getting Tick Ranger yard spray, which is cedar oil in some super concentrated form. Other than in the week after their very first application we have had ZERO ticks. None on me and none on the dogs, and none on the kids! I am not using a topical for the dogs at all and they still have not brought any inside to find other hosts. We have 2.5 acres and it is $ to have the whole thing sprayed, even into the woods, but since I haven't seen a tick (other than that first week) its worth it to me. If you do find a tick they come and respray for free. We took advantage of that so the existing tick population got a double dose and that fixed them in April. You do have to keep the yard cleaned and grass cut, but I am really happy with not having to douse in deet just to go feed the chickens. I have no idea where they are available but it was my vet that suggested them.

We recently had a dog injury that required some treatment, and then it got infected, blew out the stiches and required staples. 10 days in a cone and sedated to allow it to heal. Uma is doing fine, but since the bill was over 3k we decided that for next time we'd be ready and I got Pets Best accident only insurance for $108 per year. Its 90% reimbursement and a $250 deductible. The sedation alone, twice in fact, was over $400. They don't cover cruciate tears, BUT they do cover
1) ingestion of objects, like toys
2) being hit by a car
3) being bit by another dog
4) breaking a leg falling of a deck
5) getting punctured by a stick running after a ball
6) breaking a tooth chewing on a metal crate
7) or any other INJURY you may encounter

The list is just the ones I'd seen for which we did not have insurance.

I do not get full coverage because I don't get annual vaccines, and so it doesn't make sense to pay $150 a month to cover routine stuff since they don't allow homeopathic reimbursement. Oddly enough, that's the most expensive if you need acupuncture and chiropractic. Wait until I find a dog Reiki!

BE INFORMED…… Don’t impulse buy.

Paw It Forward’s 10 𝙩𝙞𝙥𝙨 𝙛𝙤𝙧 𝙩𝙝𝙖𝙩 𝙥𝙪𝙥𝙥𝙮 𝙬𝙞𝙩𝙝 𝙖 𝘽𝙤𝙬 𝙊𝙣 𝙄𝙩 🎁

Before you impulse buy a puppy for a gift, call me. Make your Decision based on rational logical choices. I will help you compartmentalize the lifestyle the puppy needs and the lifestyle you can give, to make the right decision.

1. Your bow tied fuzzy is a 10-15+ year commitment with all the expenses including training, grooming, vetting, boarding, and surgeries & recoveries. Know this.

2. The adult owner’s choices are responsible for the dog’s behavior, always. Own it. Training will help you make the right choices.

3. Crate training is a must for newly adopted or purchased puppies. It’s non-negotiable. Don’t get caught up in the fairies and rainbows experts. You’ll regret it. Get preventative training.

4. Educate yourself in canine genetics. Even hard core breeds CAN do well as pets when they come from GOOD genetics. Bad genetics is often difficult to clean up aggression, even with training.

5. Puppies do NOT need 100% free roam, lots of dogs, people and OVER socialization. They need you to make responsible choices for them. Over expose, and enjoy a dog that pays no attention to you. Train early.

6. Ask yourself ahead of time, is anyone going to be allergic? Expecting a baby? Planning on moving? Live in a no pets allowed apartment? Works long hours? Already has a dog reactive dog? Adopting an aggressive dog to “save it.” These are the “reasons” dogs are given up RIGHT AFTER THE NEW YEAR. Plan ahead.

7. Educate yourself in breed traits. There’s lots of breed information available online. Know the pros and cons for your lifestyle. For example, a border collie or cattle dog may not make a good family companion with small kids. That Cane Corso isn’t going to be stranger friendly. Choose wisely. That husky puppy? Yeah, call me. I’ve owned 6. Let me enlighten you.

8. Drop the “my puppy must love everything and everyone” expectations. Most dogs are selective. It’s normal.

9. Steer clear of MOST free roam only high volume, low staffed daycares. They will expect your puppy to never defend itself, never growl, never nip and love everyone and everything. This sets up dogs to bully, be pushy or be bullied as the “norm.” It’s a breeding ground for dog reactivity and poor behavior.

10. The leash is your friend. YOU are responsible for controlling movement. What you allow to happen wlll happen. Bad behavior is YOUR choice to allow. Read that again.

Research! Adopt safe adoptable dogs or invest in a good reputable breeder and good training now to save you a lot of money and heartache later. I’m here to help 🐾

For anyone needing ground transport for a dog I have recently used this company and I would recommend them. A two person team drives the dogs in a climate controlled transport van. The dogs are kenneled separately and they get bathroom breaks. Its pretty economical and they care about the dogs. They regularly handle high drive hunting dogs, so anything you have will be a piece of cake.

Bingo's Dog Food review:

Answers frozen patties
Raw Fed K9 frozen patties
Wysong dehydrated nuggets

ANSWERS- Pros- Fermentation not HHP. Mix of meat and vegetable, sourced in U.S. Good quality ingredients. No Plastic! Comes in recyclable cardboard 4lb packs. Averages $8 a lb.
Cons- Averages $8 a lb. Have to purchase in store, no delivery to my area. My vet carries it.

RAW FED K9- Pros- High quality ingredients, no HHP. Delivers to you door. Averages $5/lb. Can get a wide variety of proteins, including Beaver! All meat, no vegies.
Cons- They only ship on Mondays, so you have to plan ahead. They do ship in plastic and #6 foam coolers which may not recycle in all areas.

WYSONG- Pros- Light weight and portable. No freezer so its good for travel. Can't give cost by weight- but comparable to Raw Fed K9. Available at Chewy online. #2 Plastic tub is recyclable.
Cons- Doesn't rehydrate with water, just floats there. (dogs don't seem to mind). Has to be broken up or they might dry to swallow whole nuggets and choke.

I have a need for all three, simply because my freezer isn't that large I can supplement the biweekly RawFedK9 delivery with the Answers. Making your own is surely cheaper, but I don't have time for that. It was very difficult to get actual costs figured out at first because the recommended feeding amounts are off. My dogs eat twice what the packages say. But we sucked up the cost and made the switch to full time raw. I would LOVE to feed full time Answers because they don't use plastic, but the cost isn't feasible yet.

Product Review: Bully Beds.

They are "supposed" to be strong enough to hold up to digging and chewing dogs. Bingo is a little destructive, bless his heart. So I got him the chew resistant bed from Bully Beds. I give it zero stars. That rating in NOT because Bingo chewed it up. Its because after the first time in the washing machine it had pulls in it. No idea from what. On the second wash the inside lining came off. And on the third wash the seam unraveled a bit and THAT is what Bingo was able to rip off. It can't beat a dog because it can't even beat a front loading washing machine, so this is a no go for me. I can still use the inside cushion with a Molly Mutt cover, but the fabric isn't durable at all. I've included a stock photo. Down with Bully Beds!

Update: Bully Beds is replacing the cover. They will do this one time if your dog destroys the bed within the first 200 days. But I still can't put it with Bingo. He's going to need a rubber mat. Maybe I need another dog since I have all this bed space.

Shout out to Jolly ball, because this guy retained 4 puppy teeth and it was carrying around this heavy thing that finally got them all out. Of course if your dog doesn't like to play with the Jolly Ball then it won't help, but Bingo likes to carry things and we taught him to play with the JB.

Product review for this washable pad I got on Chewy. I generally use washable pads designed for people, but this one has rubber grips on the bottom so its suitable for in front of doorways. And that is why grub worm Bingo has two of them. They are highly absorbent and lay flat. They also don't slide around and are washable. Although with the grips I wouldn't put them in a dryer. I like them a lot and they are helpful for the upcoming mud season. They come in several sizes.

Product Review for the P.L.A.Y. bolster bed. I am not including a link because I am not endorsing this product. My dogs LOVE the bolster style. And I picked this one because they use recycled plastic bottles for filling. I like bolsters for having the added benefit of containing dog dirt, like a little bowl. Especially on carpet, this style will keep debris from embedding in the rug. HOWEVER, I hate this design and therefore wouldn't recommend this company. The bolsters are overstuffed, so its takes 10 minutes to put this thing back together and its a fight the whole time. The zippers are a very flimsy plastic, which is surprising because its not a cheap bed. One of them is already mangled and I don't think the dogs did it. I think it was the low heat of the dryer. It does dry fast, and the filler is also washable. I'm still in search of a better bolster bed, and not one that ruins the environment. I do have Molly Mutt beds also, but they are flat. They come with wool inserts, and the covers are replaceable. But they don't make the same kind of bolster bed. If the Molly Mutt and the bolster are in the same room the dogs will pick the bolster. Overall, its a thumbs down to P.L.A.Y.
