All of the animals at Kindness Ranch Animal Sanctuary have previously been used in, or were destined to be used in, laboratory research. We have a small but hardworking staff, all of who live on site to provide the animals with the best possible hands-on care. Some of our experienced staff members live with the dogs and work daily on socialization, crate-training, housebreaking, leash-walking, and

basic commands. The cats receive an abundance of play time, trees for climbing, an outdoor space for exploring, and socialization with other cats and visitors. Our horses and other farm animals also receive daily care and socialization. The horses and cows are free to roam most of our 1,000 acres, and the sheep and pigs have access to open grazing land, as well. These animals are visitor favorites and will likely live out their lives at Kindness Ranch. We also provide an adoption program for our cats, dogs, horses, potbelly pigs and occasional small mammals. Those who are too debilitated, old, or ill to be placed in a loving home can remain on the ranch to live out their days, surrounded by caretakers and volunteers who put the animals’ well-being first. We offer unique guest accommodations right on the property for those interested in volunteering, adopting, or otherwise supporting our mission. Our fully-furnished rental cabins are available year-round at competitive rates and deliver a one-of-a-kind experience for visitors of all ages! We are always looking for supporters interested in adopting, fostering, or volunteering.

We are witnessing a remarkable shift in the world of animal welfare. Thanks to your unwavering support, research facilities are now actively seeking us out to rehome their animals—a testament to the incredible success of our mission at Kindness Ranch. This cultural change is nothing short of extraordinary, and we are deeply grateful to be at the forefront of this movement, ensuring that animal welfare remains a priority in public consciousness.

But today, we need your help like never before.

In the coming month, we have the opportunity to receive 15 cats and 67 dogs from four different states. However, with our facilities currently under construction, we simply don’t have the space to accommodate them all. These animals have already endured so much, and we are committed to giving them the safe and loving homes they deserve—but we can’t do it alone.

This is where you come in.

We urgently need adopters, fosters, long-term volunteers to step up and help us provide for these 82 souls. Whether you can offer a temporary home, a permanent place in your family, or volunteer your time, your support will make all the difference.

Please, if you can help, act now:

If interested in fostering, please email [email protected] and understand that we do not have resources for transporting to you - we would ask that you please come and pick up your foster.

Volunteer: https://kindnessranch.org/pages/calling-all-animal-lovers-volunteer-at-kindness-ranch-animal-sanctuary-in-wyoming

This is an urgent plea. Together, we can ensure that every one of these animals finds the loving care they so desperately need.
Thank you for being a vital part of this life-saving work.

We will need adopters and volunteers as soon as possible. Please check the website for info on either process.

As we rejoice in the cooler temps and much needed rainfall today we also wanted to share another one of a seemingly endless list of things to be grateful for out here!

Miracles just keep happening here - Hailey, our beautiful metabolic horse, who struggled to walk a few months ago, got the all clear to return out to pasture with friends old and new yesterday!

It fills our hearts to know that supporters like you, who love and follow Hailey's journey, make this possible!

We have some heartwarming news.

When Ziggy arrived at our sanctuary in March, we knew only that she needed our help. We soon discovered she was pregnant, and our joy was immense. After enduring years of forced pregnancies and having her foals taken away, Ziggy has now given birth and, for the first time, will be able to keep and care for her baby. We are thrilled for her new beginning and the chance to be the mother she always wanted to be.

Stay tuned for the name of this little guy!

Happening now - in progress

3 horses are on their way to Kindness Ranch after spending their lives in pharmaceutical production.

Bleeder horses, often used in PMU (pregnant mare urine) production facilities, face significant challenges and hardships. PMU production involves collecting the urine of pregnant mares to extract hormones for hormone replacement therapy drugs, such as Premarin. The plight of these horses includes:

Confinement and Restricted Movement:
Mares are typically kept in small stalls with limited movement to facilitate urine collection. This confinement can lead to physical and psychological stress.

Frequent Pregnancies:
To produce PMU, mares are repeatedly impregnated. This continuous cycle of pregnancy takes a toll on their health and well-being.

Foal Displacement:
The foals born from these pregnancies are often separated from their mothers at a young age. Many foals are sold for slaughter, as they are considered by-products of the PMU industry.

Health Issues:
The lack of movement and inadequate care can lead to various health problems, including lameness, joint issues, and respiratory problems. The term "bleeder" may refer to horses that experience exercise-induced pulmonary hemorrhage (EIPH), a condition where the horse bleeds from the lungs, often exacerbated by poor living conditions and lack of exercise.

Poor Living Conditions:
Facilities may lack proper bedding, ventilation, and nutrition, contributing to a poor quality of life for the horses.

Emotional Distress:
Horses are social animals and the isolation and lack of interaction can lead to emotional and psychological distress.

End-of-Production Fate:
Once the mares are no longer productive, they are often sent to slaughter, as they are no longer deemed useful by the industry.

Impact on Welfare:
Bleeder horses, especially those in PMU production facilities or other high-stress environments, may suffer from the compounded effects of EIPH and poor living conditions. The stress and physical demands placed on these horses can exacerbate their condition and negatively impact their overall well-being.

Industry Practices:
In some industries, horses labeled as bleeders may be subjected to additional scrutiny and treatment protocols to manage their condition. However, the underlying issues of confinement, inadequate care, and lack of exercise in PMU facilities can contribute to the prevalence and severity of EIPH in these horses.

Understanding the plight of bleeder horses, in the context of PMU production, highlights the need for improved welfare standards and the development of humane alternatives to PMU-derived products.

These three horses will get to experience the freedom of a stress free life for the first time starting today!

Kindness Ranch has invested tens of thousands of dollars so far this year in receiving, transporting and care for horses. We cannot continue to do this vital work without your help and support! Please donate at the link below -

And now, back to our regularly scheduled program.

Lucky!

Lucky is a very well behaved dog who knows most all basic asks of him such as sit and stay and sometimes shake (if he likes you). He is a sweet sweet boy that can get pretty protective of his food, so his new home will have to be aware of and work with him on this... When we take him to a seperate room away from other dogs he seems to prefer that for his meal times...

To celebrate Dogust 4th and being able to return to the sanctuary after the fire evacuation - Lucky, for approved adopters, is only a $25 adoption fee!

First and foremost, thank you all for the overwhelming support. We are relieved to share that we have been given the all-clear, and the sanctuary is safe.

Human and animal safety are always our top priority. The incredible number of offers for help from our community is beyond amazing. However, logistically, it can sometimes be slower to coordinate with everyone during a stressful situation like this. With only one road in and out of the sanctuary, adding traffic puts others at risk and can inhibit emergency response efforts.

Our large arena, completely metal, surrounded by a gravel parking lot, and with an ample water supply, is one of the safest places for our large animals during a fast-moving brush fire without large timber as fuel. This building is even safer than having some animals running loose, where they risk getting caught in fencing or struck on the road by responding fire units or other evacuees. Fire crews, the sheriff’s department, and emergency volunteers were all aware of the priority of this building and staged accordingly.

The socialization of our large animals has been our primary focus, alongside healthcare, as mental and physical health needs are intertwined. Every one of our animals was able to be moved calmly to the safest space possible, handled appropriately, and remained comfortable throughout the night as we awaited the all-clear.

Please know that our contingency plan is thoroughly worked out, approved by local fire and emergency response teams, and filed with all our regulating government agencies. We do not take this responsibility lightly and practice these drills regularly. Because of this, we were able to safely move over 100 animals and nearly 20 staff members and their animals to safety in such a short time.

I could not be more proud of how the Kindness Ranch staff responded to the call to evacuate. They remained calm, prioritized tasks effectively, and communicated with each other clearly and professionally throughout the entire process.

Hello everyone,

This evening we had to make the difficult decision to evacuate Kindness Ranch. The fire was picked up by the wind and headed our direction.

We have been able to successfully evacuate all our cats, dogs, staff and personal animals. We have all our large animals housed safely in metal buildings with lots of food, water and a dedicated small number of staff staying back and caring for them.

Thank you to members of our community for assisting with the care of our animals by providing shelter for our care team and the animals they are caring for.

Thank you to the fire department, law enforcement and everyone who has been so wonderful to communicate with through this all.

We are all safe, the animals and humans. Thank you for your support.

Bowie and Lennon came to KR together and have since bonded over their shared enjoyment for life outside the lab. These sweet boys love to play and snuggle together. We often find them cuddled up inside, outside exploring the yard together or just hanging out grooming each other. If you're looking for a pair of cats look no further! Bowie & Lennon would make a wonderful addition to any home.

For those that have reached out -

Thank you very much for your concern. We are monitoring the fire closely and in communication with local authorities. We do have a well rehearsed contingency plan in place and have made preparations.

The last update we had is that currently we are safe and the fire is moving east and past us, though it is a little too close for comfort. Provided the wind doesn't shift we should be okay.

A huge shout out to all the brave souls out there fighting this fire and keeping us all safe, please make sure you all make home safely to your families.
