K9 CHAMP LOCATES 70 POUNDS OF M**H DURING NAPA TRAFFIC STOP
On Thursday, July 11, at approximately 4 p.m., Golden Gate Division K-9 “Champ” and his handler were patrolling SR-29 in Napa County when the officer observed a vehicle following another vehicle too closely, commonly referred to as “tailgating.” The officer conducted an enforcement stop and contacted the driver. During the contact, Champ was deployed to investigate the vehicle for the odor of controlled substances. Almost immediately, Champ alerted and identified the odor was in fact present.
The officer detained the occupants of the vehicle and additional officers arrived at the scene to assist with the investigation. During a search of the vehicle, approximately 70 pounds of suspected methamphetamine with a street value of approximately $250,000 was located. This investigation is ongoing.
Our K9 program is another valuable tool that we bring to the communities we serve. CHP K9’s are trained in a variety of different fields, including protection, controlled substances, and explosives detection. The K9 unit is not assigned to any one specific office within the Bay Area which allows them to travel throughout the region as needed. Handlers and their K9 partners complete their own academy where they spend three months learning to work as a team and focus on their specific field of expertise.
Have you always wanted to work as a K9 handler in law enforcement? The CHP has K9 teams across the state so no matter where you’re from, there’s a K9 team near you. Learn more about a rewarding career with the CHP by visiting www.chpmadeformore.com
