Ever wanted a T. seladonia but couldn’t justify a multi-hundred dollar price tag for a sling the size of your pinky nail?

Well here’s the solution. A GIGANTIC one that you can see and appreciate all the time without any of the stress, and for a small fraction of the cost.

Buyer beware: It might steal your coffee or eat a small dog. Purchase at your own risk.🤪

Been kinda neglecting to post here (so follow Shane’s Spiders for more frequent posting) but i made some multicolor minis for the market. Sadly i started the axolotls and unicorns a little too late and they weren’t ready in time to bring with us.

Just wanted to make a post for people who may not know. Imve seen a lot of people like the page lately and i think it’s because of the banner we bring to shows that has Spoiled spider at the top and the shanes spiders logo underneath.

The Spoiled Spider is part of Shane’s Spiders. I meant to move all my drygoods stuff here and just have spiders and any other live animals there, but i kinda failed at doing any of that in a timely manner. 😬So if you’re wanting to stay better up to date, make sure to like/follow us at Shane’s Spiders because that’s where we usually make out posts 😅

Just wanted to make a little informative post in enclosure lids. i’m not wanting to tell anybody they HAVE to do anything a certain way or argue about needing or not needing to do one or the other, just to share some of the pros and cons of the most common options.

Wire mesh/screen and Stamped steel mesh lids:
All the most common exotics tanks like The exo-terra, zoomed, zilla, and of course the typical aquarium conversion lid, all use one of these style lids, and so as you can imagine, there have been many thousands of spiders kept with these lids over the years. However, if you have been on any big tarantula facebook group or forum for long, you’ve probably seen somebody (or many somebodies) say that those lids should be modified or replaced. The reason being is that with a mesh made from a very thin material, the tarsal claws at the end of every leg can actually wrap too far around the mesh/screen and get caught in a way that the tarantula can have difficulty removing, resulting in a stuck dangling spider and potentially lost legs and/or death of the spider. I don’t want to call it a common event, as it definitively does not happen the majority of the time, but it does happen often enough that it is worth considering. The upsides to these lids are that they are easy to get (usually comes with the tank) and inexpensive (again, usually included so no extra cost) One last upside (or downside sometimes) is that they offer an incredible amount of ventilation.

Acrylic/plastic replacements or modifications: The next most common or recommended type of lid would be the acrylic/plexiglass/plastic lid. Often these are “do it yourself” modifications to the original lid, but you can also find drop in replacements that require no DIY skills also. The acrylic if done properly will COMPLETELY remove the chance of tarsal claws becoming caught in the wire mesh, however they arent without some downsides also. They are added cost. If you DIY one, they can be done on a budget but they take some time to make, and for those who are not particularly “handy” it can be challenging to create a satisfactory design. Pre-made replacements are much easier, but will cost a premium. While ventilation will vary drastically by the specific design, typically you will get less from the acrylic than a screen or mesh.

So a quick comparison summary would be:

Cost:
The stock lids will typically always be more cost effective/ DIY will be a small increase in price, as well as some time contribution/ Premade replacements will cost a premium.

Ventilation:
Screen and mesh lids offer extremely high ventilation. Acrylic lids will vary by design but will almost always be less ventilated. Both can work just fine, care will just need to be adjusted accordingly for either.

Safety:
Mesh/screen lids have potential for tarantulas to get their claws stuck, resulting in the spider becoming unable to walk, and can result in injury or death. The thickness of most acrylic removes this possibility.

Visibility:
Will vary by design, but typically mesh or screen lids offer poor visibility. Acrylic lids will offer varying visibility depending on the amount of acrylic, and the placement of ventilation, but usually will offer a drastic improvement in clarity over the screen/mesh lids.

Strength:
There is a lot of potential difference here. The steel lids that are typically used as aquarium conversions are very strong, but the wire screen lids are not. they can be chewed through by a motivated spider or very easily pushed in or ripped out by a curious or playful cat or child. The acrylic lids will also have a wide variation in strength depending on construction, so please consider design when considering going with acrylic.

I hopw you enjoyed my Long winded food for thought post, and hopefully somebody out there finds it helpful in forming their own opinions on what they want to use for their critters. 😁

Still working on what i want for keychains, but no point in me keeping all the test pieces. They have a design on both sides, so check the Set # and Letter to see what both sides look like.

$1 per keychain plus shipping ($10) if you’d like one, and can easilly fit with a spider or dry good purchase that hasn’t already been shipped (and honestly if you have a pending order, i’ll add one for free Just gotta message me here or on Shane’s Spiders or shane Selva)

(To any that may not know, we’re a branch of Shane’s Spiders so could combine with any Shane’s Spiders order that hasn’t shipped yet)

Edit:
Set 1 A and B are claimed

Almost made it without any issues. LOL

This size and style (along with XS flat trees) are usually the most problematic hide design i have, so i’m quire happy that it went almost perfectly.
