Yes, I have my kids cold water hose the horses legs, back, etc. after a workout.

PRO TIP OF THE DAY

I get asked quite frequently what people can do to help their horses stay sound throughout the year or how to help sore bodies after competing…we spend 1,000’s of dollars buying them 1,000’s feeding them and 1,000’s in vet bills but not many people will take 20-30 minutes out of their day to cold hose the horse. It’s the cheapest and easiest way to have stimulation as well as cooling down easing inflammation you can ask for. My go to solution is stand them in a running creek/river if you have the availability and if not the hose works just as well. This is the only green patch in my whole yard throughout the summer because our horses get hosed down almost every time they get rode. We put on 60,000ish miles a year on the road with our animals plus the countless days getting exercised or performed on. This right here is how we keep them going besides the occasional freak accident or other injuries that occur on the job that require veterinary assistance.

Proud to announce, MBHA State will once again have $20K added in the Open! Thank you for the support of the MBHA members and the hard work of the directors keeping this organization strong! This was sent to us, not by the author, but by someone who believes ‘Every word of it rings true”.

‘The best horses are built over years of hauling, hard work, tough times, good times, bad times, big spooks, little spooks, their mistakes, our mistakes and continual love and care.

‘No, your breaker can not turn your young prospect into your old faithful in 30, 60, 90, or even 365 days. It takes years.

‘I’m plagued with the problem of trying to impress on people how long it truly takes to build that dream partner. There’s not a smooth paved path. Your green horse will embarrass you, frustrate you, and maybe even hurt you. For some of you, buying a $20,000-$30,000 horse is going to be worth it and SAVE you money. Even that more finished horse will take a year or more to sync up with.

‘Cheap rate for horse training is $1,000 a month.
1 year of training: $12,000
2 years of training: $24,000

‘Many of you won’t believe this but your dream horse is on the other side of two years of training. In reality, it’s likely around two years of training and two years of seasoning (hauling them to town). Will that horse still make mistakes? Yes, they all make mistakes until the day they die. But that horses mistakes probably won’t put you in serious danger and that horse will probably pack your grandkids around.

‘If you’re trying to decide between a $3,500 prospect or a $15,000 proven horse. My advice is to do an internal inventory and figure out what you want. Buying that prospect is like the first roll on the Jumanji board. You’re entered up, get ready for a journey of ups and downs (possibly quite literally!) If you’re buying that finished horse decide what you really want, get ready for a lot of shopping and painfully overpriced sh💩tters. Take a friend or a trainer on this journey with you and try to double your budget (that’s right, 30k). Be smart and buy something OVER 8 years old. Don’t buy that pretty 5 year old they only want 20k for. He isn’t old enough to be proven for you. Lots of horse traders are trying to flip horses, anything under 8 is likely twice as green as he looks in the video. Maturity, both mental and physical will be key when looking for a safe horse.

‘If you want a project and a challenge I’m not hating, that’s what I want in a horse too, so I buy young ones. If you need a safe one, bring lots of money and quit thinking you need a 6 year old. You probably don’t have what it takes to mentally support that 6 year old through new situations.

‘The biggest reason I bring this up is because as folks retire their old faithful they are so far removed from when that horse was green and did dumb stuff. They forgot how tough those two years were back when he was 4-6. They only remember the amazing horse he was when he matured. The 3 year old they just bought is YEARS from filling that horses shoes when it comes to training level and safety level. I see people hate on trainers because the trainer couldn’t make their young horse, “finished” in 90 days. It’s honestly the biggest reason I like taking colts for 30 or 60 days. The expectation is shockingly lower than when I take one for 90 days. It’s weird what people expect from a 90 day start. Most people should commit to sending their young horse out for a full year. Two years would be even better.

‘Green horses do green horse things, don’t blame others for the challenge you bought yourself. Accept the challenge or pay the price for one further along. No matter which path you choose with horses, it’s going to cost you.

Nicole Laurence posted the following and I agree. It's the way I teach.
I'm probably a bit too tough for some people, but the reason I'm tough is because I want people to respect the horse, be as safe as possible, be a partner not just a passenger and achieve their goals. I don't just provide pony rides. Here's what she said: "Let’s talk about the lack of quality coaching and lack of standards in the equine industry.
For example, kids learning with someone who claims to be a “coach" and all they learned is how to see-saw a horse's head down and chuck their body around a barrel like a champion.
All coaching is not equal.

But what happens when you have a good coach? One that opens their program to you, takes you under his/her wing? Becomes invested in your success? When you essentially become part of the "family"...

Eventually, something will happen...

Coach tells you that you are not Martha Josey 2.0, and not ready to make the move up to the next level.
Coach says you need to go back and fix some holes in your training.
Coach says you have developed a bad habit, and it needs to be fixed before you can accomplish your goals.

Coach says you need to make sure that your horse is being ridden. With a purpose.
Coach says you need to dedicate more time to studying the sport, not just riding.
Coach says it isn't a "horse" problem, it is a "you" problem.

People have become increasingly more reactionary. More easily offended. In lieu of everyone getting a trophy, it is so hard to hear these words from people you admire. Some of the best coaches will be the toughest. Not ones that tear you apart constantly, but coaches that aren't afraid to have the tough conversations with you. Or conversations that you may not have wanted to have.

But remember, a good coach is in YOUR corner. They want YOU to achieve success. They dedicate so much more than an hour of time to your growth not only as a rider but as a horseman. Maybe you are burning the candle at both ends (and in the middle), and you need a reality check that this sport requires more of your time and focus.

These conversations can hurt, but while it may sting at first.... take a second. Think about why your coach is against you moving up right now, why your coach is saying to wait until the summer to be a working student, why your coach is saying that you should not enter the show until the homework and flat work is done.

Surround yourself with coaches that aren't afraid to have these tough conversations with you. You don't want or need a "cheerleader" coach. You are paying you for your coach’s expertise... the positives and the criticism. Let them help make the best decisions for your horse, and for your program. The lessons on the horse and the lessons off of the horse. Are you ready?

We need to support this.

Big things are happening for the city of East Helena Montana. With a new industrial plant going in that will bring jobs to our community as well as more affordable housing, our rodeo grounds was forced to relocate from our long-standing location.

Although we have been successful at securing a large grant from Lewis & Clark County, we have a long road ahead of obtaining funds needed for phase one of our relocation. The grant has been utilized for engineering costs and all excavation of the new grounds.

We are still in need of funding for grandstands as well as bringing in power and a well to the new location. That is why our association is reaching out far and wide to all the good people who want to keep the heritage of rodeo alive in our small town.

The East Helena Valley Rodeo Association (EHVRA) is a non-profit, volunteer organization that has been dedicated to the heritage of rodeo and the future of the sport for over 60 years. Our association is made up of over 30 committee members who have worked hard year-round each year to bring to you one of the biggest and best Northern Rodeo Association (NRA) rodeos in the state.

The EHVRA is committed to youth and the sport of rodeo. This move will allow us to not only to produce our annual NRA rodeo, but also offer use of the grounds for community events built around the sport of rodeo. (Something that our association has not been able to do recently because of the limited land use agreement of the original location.)

Our vision is to provide an affordable or no-cost location for youth groups that are focused on the sport of rodeo, ranching and/or farming to practice, fundraise or hold events throughout the season.

The new EHVRA Rodeo Grounds will bring in commerce to our small town and ensure that the Montana Heritage of Rodeo continues for generations to come.

They say, “it takes a village” and that is true. Your donation will help ensure that the future of rodeo in East Helena and our surrounding areas is secured. Thank you for taking the time to consider being part of the future of Rodeo in Montana.
