Do you ever wonder why a rural rescue with very low donations & few supporters can maintain 440 dogs vet needs when you watch well funded rescues beg for vet bills of $1000 & $2000 just to get something taken care of? Obviously we can’t do that…shoot, we don’t even make our goal of $1000 per week to vet our hospice dogs which usually covers their meds, refills, surgeries, and about a dozen a week going in for issues and check ups.
So let me tell you how we do it and give you some tips. First off, we attend a lot of spay/neuter mobile clinics. While others are paying $200 to $600 for spays etc, we are paying less than $80 usually. Our clinic vet works really well with us for all the rest of the surgeries required during the week…we are lucky. AND we treat a lot of things ourselves….under supervision of course.
1. We start by keeping them fed with good quality food. Not overboard expense, just a good medium grade kibble and wet foods. NEVER feed 1 star foods and low quality cheap kibble….all that filler causes all kinds of problems.
2. We keep everything clean & disinfected from laundry to crates to floors….just disinfect the crap. It will save so much heartaches and what ifs.
3. BMAR uses some holistic remedies. We inspect the dogs every few days and for signs of trouble -and we always have a new incident crop up – we hop on it with our little home remedies.
4. Keep the ticks, fleas, worms out of and off of your dogs. Simple fact and most people just don’t do it. If you can’t afford a flea trio medication, grab the bottle of Dawn and some decent OTC wormer and get ‘er done!
Apple Cider Vinegar:
Vinegar, particularly apple cider vinegar, offers several potential benefits for dogs, including aiding digestion, relieving itchy skin, acting as a natural flea and tick repellent, and promoting ear hygiene, but it's crucial to use it diluted.
Topical Uses:
• Itchy Skin & Hot Spots:
Diluted ACV can soothe itchy skin and alleviate the discomfort of hot spots, yeast infections, and rashes.
• Ear Cleaning:
A diluted ACV solution can be used to gently wipe and disinfect a dog's ears, helping to maintain ear hygiene and prevent infections.
• Flea & Tick Repellent:
The strong odor of ACV can deter fleas and ticks when applied to a dog's coat, or you can add a few drops to their water to help repel them from the inside out.
• Dandruff:
ACV can help eliminate dandruff and rejuvenate the coat by balancing the dog's skin pH level.
• Muscle Soreness:
A diluted ACV solution can be used to massage strained muscles, providing relief.
We have also used it for the pads of dogs when they get that moist yuck that you know is fixing to be a problem…but dilute it!
Distilled white vineagar: CLEANING! It cleans everything (don’t use it in the laundry though…it will take your washer right out!) We add it to dish water, mop water, urine odor remover. We soak the concrete floors and it takes that urine stink right out. It is good for everything you want to clean in the kennels…just like in your house.
Peroxide…we use tons of this stuff too. In the laundry, on the floors, it will clean even the roughest bowls. It kills germs and bacteria on any surface as well as viruses. If you keep your kennels disinfected…you are going to cut down on a lot of respiratory problems for the doggos.
If you suspect your dog just ate something it shouldn’t…ie: rat poisen or whatever…you can use peroxide to induce vomiting asap…if you catch it immediately. Otherwise…go to the vet.
Of course you can use it to cleanse cuts, abrasions, wounds. Besides being a germicide, the bubbles will mechanically remove pus and debris. If it’s a deep puncture though…go to the vet.
Benadryl Tablets ( we do not use capsules)
Allergies: hives, Hay fever, food allergies, atopic dermititus, etc.
Motion Sickness: your dog puke in the car? This helps sometimes
Anxiety: Storms? Gun Shots? Loud noises? Fireworks? This stuff really helps us a lot with our high anxiety dogs…makes them a bit calmer.
Cardiovascular Disease: Cardiovascular disease; Hypertension; Hyperthyroidism; Asthma and COPD; Closed-angle glaucoma….but NOT without your vet!
Mast Cell Tumors: Very helpful in combating these nasty tumors.
Seizures: Research what kind of seizures your dogs have…we have found it to be helpful.
There are many uses for Benadryl for dogs…we use it for a lot of things even down to helping those with liver disease…but talk to your vet about it first. Do some research…it helps a lot.
We stay very low on these items…so if you are thinking of buying us stuff…this is what we need right now.
