The Aquarium & Shark Lab is home to 6,000 gallons of saltwater exhibits, dozens of reptiles, and unique ocean discoveries. We're the aquarium that inspires!

We wanted to share some training with you!

Natalie is checking our tortoise eggs that have been incubating for a few months. She back lights or candles them, much like checking chicken eggs, and notes descriptions and changes in her reptile journal. The average incubation time is 145 days, dependent on the temperature. Our eggs are 1/2 way there!
It has been very interesting to learn how to discern viable from non viable eggs!

Porter is learning to tag a new shark egg. All measurements are taken and recorded in the egg journal. please watch his short video and listen as he talks you through this super cool process!

Slipper lobsters are just to cute! Unlike other typical lobsters, they do not have long antennas. The antennae theirs have modified to flat, plate like structures at the front of their head.
The smallest species lives in the Mediterranean which only grows to 1/2 inch long! the largest is the Aesop or hunched-back which can grow up to 20inches long!
These lobsters eat worms, sea urchins,small shrimp and crabs, and sea stars!
Your Citizen Science question is to bring in a drawing of a slipper lobster and write 3 amazing facts about it and receive free admission! Activity is for children ages 10 and under valid 9/18-21/2024 during regular public hours. hours at www.teamecco.org

this might look like a sleeping fish with blue eyes....... but it is one of the FL fighting conchs in the tide pool! He has developed cool blue tint to the crown k***s on his shell. I hate to tell him it is a bit early for Halloween! Such a trickster!

Good morning! The Aquarium is waking up and starting to enjoy the day!

Charlotte update for 4-27-24. Charlotte is doing well and enjoys interacting with guests and the divers. Her favorite thing to eat this week was scallops along with silversides. We thank you for your patience and kindness during Charlotte’s journey, have a great weekend everyone!

Charlotte update for 4/10/24. Charlotte is continuing on her journey with Parthenogenesis! She continues to be healthy and has a great appetite! She also initiates interactions with the divers and guests as seen in this video with diver Jacob! We thank you for your kindness and support as we continue on this journey of scientific learning. Our Story

Living in Western North Carolina, the opportunity to explore marine life from different parts of the ocean is a scarcity. That is why in 2001, Team ECCO was brought to life as a grassroots ocean learning program to reach and teach students of all ages in WNC about the ocean. This first initiative took 40 children and 10 adults on a voyage to discover manatees. Location should not be an excuse for lack of resources and knowledge, so Executive Director, Brenda Ramer decided to take action. In 2007 Team ECCO received full IRS 501 c 3 status. This status gave Team ECCO the official title of non-profit.
