As our pets age, they can begin to display signs of cognitive dysfunction, or "doggy dementia". Signs of cognitive dysfunction syndrome are:

* Disorientation - They get lost or confused in places that should be familiar, such as home. They may wander aimlessly or stare blankly at walls. They may get stuck in corners or behind furniture.

* Changes in Behavior - Your pet may become more irritable or aggressive. They may have reduced interest in playing or other social behaviors, such as becoming clingy.

* Altered Sleep and Activity - You may notice changes in your pet's normal sleep cycles. They may sleep during the day and be restless at night. They may even vocalize excessively at night. Their energy and activity levels may decrease as well.

* House-soiling - Your pet may seem to forget house-training rules or where the litter box is normally located.

* Anxiety - Your pet may exhibit increased anxiety, including separation anxiety and new or increased phobias.

If you believe your pet is currently exhibiting any signs of cognitive dysfunction, or are just concerned about future dysfunction, talk to your veterinarian about what you can do to boost your pet's cognitive health and offer support at home.

Senior pets are highly susceptible to dental disease, which can lead to life-threatening health issues. It's important to understand the signs of potential dental disease, but it's even more important to make sure your senior pet is getting their teeth professionally checked every year.

Signs of Dental Disease:
* Bad breath
* Changes in eating habits - dropping food, eating on one side of the mouth, or reluctance to eat hard food
* Red, swollen, or bleeding gums
* Oral discomfort - pawing at the face or mouth
* Loose or missing teeth
* Facial swelling - swelling under the jaw or around the eye, which can indicate an abscess.
* Visible signs of decay - yellow or brown tartar buildup on the teeth.

Why it's important:
* Pain and suffering - Chronic pain can be caused by dental disease and lead to a decrease in activity.
* Systemic health problems - Bacteria from the mouth can enter the bloodstream and affect vital organs such as the liver, heart, and kidneys.
* Increased risks - Senior pets tend to have weaker immune systems and other health issues. This can make them more vulnerable to complications from dental disease.

If your pet is showing any signs of possible dental disease, schedule an exam with your veterinarian.

November is Senior Pet Month and we will be here to provide tips and helpful information to give your senior pet the best well-being during their golden years.

Many of our senior pets suffer from arthritis (joint inflammation) in one or many joints. In addition to medications and veterinary care, there are things you can do at home to ease your pet's sore joints:

* Provide a comfortable bed - Offer soft, but supportive bedding to help cushion your pet's joints.
* Provide ramps or steps - Utilize a ramp to help your pet get in and out of the car, or up on furniture, such as a bed.
* Elevate food and water bowls - By lifting the bowls up, this eases strain on the neck and back while a pet is eating.
* Adjust the litter box - Help your cats access their litter box easier by providing one with low sides or cut a larger opening
* Improve Floors - Place rugs or runners on slick surfaces, such as hard wood floors, to help your pet grip easier when walking
* Keep nails trimmed - Keeping your pets nails trimmed helps them with their grip and traction on floors.

If you find your pet having difficulty with activities like jumping or going up stairs, reluctant to move, limping, or having stiffness, contact us to discuss medical options to make your pet more comfortable.

🎃🧟‍♀️💀 It's gearing up to be a busy and exciting Halloween this Friday! Here are some tips to keep your pets safe during the festivities:

* Keep pets inside - Strangers in costumes can be stressful for a pet. And if your pet isn't a fan of the doorbell, you may want to consider setting up the candy bowl outside.

* Create a safe space - Give your anxious pet a secure and quiet place with their favorite toys. Try some soft music or TV to mask the sounds outside.

* Keep candy out of reach - Keep all candy out of reach of pets. Many Halloween treats contain chocolate and xylitol which are toxic to pets.

* Watch out for decor - Lit candles, jack-o-lanterns, glow sticks, and other items can be a hazard, especially if your curious pet likes to chew on things.

* Monitor costumed pets - Make sure your pet's costume fits properly and allows your pet to see, hear, breathe, and move freely.

We hope these tips keep everyone and their pets safe and free to enjoy the Halloween season!

Today, we are talking about dental care! Just like we visit our dentist for regular cleanings, it is vitally important that pets get their teeth cleaned too. And we are not talking about just a tooth brushing. With a professional dental cleaning, plaque and tartar are able to be removed below the gum line and diseased teeth can be treated or removed. This will prevent painful conditions like periodontal disease, protect against infection, and reduce the risk of systemic illnesses that can affect the kidneys, liver, and heart.

Here, Dr. Bones is showing what happens during a dental cleaning. Each patient is placed under anesthesia after examination and lab work show it's safe to do so. While under, the patient is continuously monitored and full dental radiographs are performed. This can show the doctor potential problems not visible to the eye. A technician scales and cleans each tooth while the doctor addresses any major problems. Once complete, the pet will continue to be monitored until fully awake from the anesthesia.

Professional dental cleanings lead to a higher quality of life for your pet and have been shown to add two more years onto your pet's life.

Fun Fact Friday!

Have you ever noticed a black cat that changes color in the sun?

Some black cats contain genetic dispositions to a faint tabby pattern with less melanin. The UV rays of the sun can sometimes break down the eumelanin of the cat's fur and lighten it to a reddish brown. This natural and harmless process is called the "rusting effect".

Did you know that a tiny amount of blood or urine can tell us a whole story of what is happening in your pet's body?

Dr. Bones is running a routine panel on a patient today. There are many factors that tell the doctor what is going on internally:

* Pancreas Health - The pancreas helps produce insulin and digestive enzymes.
* Kidney Health - The kidneys are the filtration system of the body. They help regulate electrolytes and blood pressure and are responsible for removing toxins from the blood.
* Electrolytes - Electrolytes are crucial in regulating the nervous system and functions throughout the body.
* Liver Health - This organ has many functions and the liver values are crucial in diagnosing a wide variety of diseases.
* Cell Health - A Complete Blood Count (CBC) evaluates red and white blood cells, as well as the platelets. These values can detect anemia, infections, and much more.
* Urinalysis - A urinalysis completes the picture of the kidney, bladder, and urinary health.

These are just some of the values and factors that a doctor looks at when reviewing your pet's blood work. Even if your pet is not actively sick, it's a good idea to have routine lab work done so that the doctor has a baseline of what is normal in your pet. That way, any future changes can alert the doctor to possible illnesses and can begin treatment sooner.
