April is Heartworm Awareness Month.
There are many "tall tales" floating around about heartworms. Here are some of the facts:
MYTH: "Dogs catch heartworms from other dogs" - Heartworms spread by infected mosquitoes, which bite and infect dogs, cats, ferrets and wild animals like coyotes.
MYTH: "Cats don't get heartworm disease" - Not only can cats get heartworms, harboring just one adult heartworm can be lethal. As for treatment, there isn't one.
MYTH: "My dog is on prevention, so he doesn't need to be tested" - Don't skip that test! Medications can be spit out, rubbed off, or forgotten, creating windows of infection opportunity.
MYTH: "Heartworms are only transmitted in the summer" - Depending on locale (here in WNC!), mosquitoes that transmit heartworms can thrive during the colder months. They can also fly indoors or shelter in warm, protected areas.
MYTH: "My indoor cat doesn't need prevention" - In fact, 1 in 4 cats diagnosed with heartworms is an indoor-only cat.
MYTH: "Heartworm prevention isn't worth the money" - Heartworm preventives can cost less than $10 a month for a dog, but treatment can cost more than $1,000. And besides, your pet's health is priceless!
