Y’all! Last week was a week, wasn’t it?! Snow, ice and no running water for 4 days! I want to take this opportunity to call out and acknowledge the amazing team we have here at Varina Vet! In addition to making the effort to get here despite weather that kept even the postal workers at bay (Neither snow nor rain nor heat nor gloom of night….😉) everyone here stepped up!

Diane, Kara and Amber made all of the necessary calls and notes for delays in opening and rescheduling appointments, Trinity and Tyler came in and shoveled and salted the walkways, Christina came in to check water pressure and notify clients each morning if we could do grooming or not and Shannon and Meredith took home surgical packs to scrub and bring back to sterilize in the autoclave! The girls demonstrated not only teamwork but initiative by shoveling snow, collecting it in a Rubbermaid bin, and bringing it inside to melt it into water for flushing when the water first went out. The next day Phil, Jenna, Kristen and myself brought in gallons of water to help flush the toilets. Kristen also brought gallons of distilled water for our dental machine and autoclave! Dr Hogge picked up employees in his truck and made sure they got to work and home safely. He performed a life saving surgery during the bad weather, Dr Phil came in on his day off to help and Dr Breidenbach took on extra appointments in order for it all to happen on a day with limited hours because of the bad weather.

We have had some amazing clients drive here (one from Midlothian!) to make sure we had ample water to clean the hospital and flush toilets and others who brought us cases of water to drink and wash hands with. One client told me “ I was at Food Lion when they were restocking the water so I thought I would pick up some for you guys too”. 🥰. Thank you so much for thinking of us and helping!

All in all - work conditions were less than ideal last week but this group pulled together and made it happen so that our clients and their pets were taken care of and got the medical care they needed! Thank you so much!!

WEATHER UPDATE ❄️

Given the weather forecast for tonight and tomorrow morning, and prioritizing the safety of our staff and clients, we will be opening on a DELAYED schedule for Monday, January 6th. We currently anticipate opening at 11 AM and will be adjusting our evening appointments to ensure our staff can commute home safely before dark and the roads becoming icy when the temperatures drop.

We will reassess the weather conditions in the morning to determine the best course of action for our hospital and will provide CLOSURE updates by 10 AM.

A deceased intact male gray and white pit bull was found on Rt 5 near the Dairy Queen by 2 of our technicians today. We are holding him in our care at 1320 New Market Road until next Friday morning (1/10), in the hopes that his family will come forward to claim him. After that time, we will ensure he receives dignified final care through our cremation company.
