Msssive, massive shout out to Adam Fahr and Lyle Shepherd, without them I probably would’ve tucked tail and run when I saw the shoe list. 😅 Instead, with their help, I put myself way out of my comfort zone and had an absolute blast while doing it. I could not be happier with the results 😊

And of course, THANK YOU to everyone who has a hand with putting on these World Championship Blacksmiths contests. It is a massive undertaking, and I am incredibly grateful that an organization like this exists. This is truly the most amazing and supportive group of professionals I have ever witnessed.

Another fantastic read and an even more fantastic illustration of the hoof capsule from Austin Forge. I was just explaining this to a new client who was concerned about the shape of her horses foot as it was looking wider than it was long. Don’t get swept away in thinking “short toes” are always better!

It’s amazing what bringing it back to the basics can do for a horses feet! 👀🔥Top picture is what I walked up to at my first appointment with this horse. Bottom pic is about a year and a half later.

Nothing crazy was done to make it happen either!! Just a dedication to the basics combined with consistency BY THE OWNER- and I think that has been the main help!
✨Stalls are always clean- horse has a dry environment to live in
✨ Farrier appointments strictly at 5 weeks- and horse stands well
✨ Religiously applies an oil based topical (in his case straight up coconut oil, which is naturally antibacterial/anti fungal) to the hooves at LEAST once a day to protect against the humidity and moisture of the Mid South.

That’s it folks!!! Simplicity at its finest. 🤩 Consistency is the key. 👏💪🫵

🚫No glue
🚫No Aluminum
🚫No crazy shoe packages
🚫No expensive supplements
✅All done with steel and toe clips!

I had an absolute BLAST at my first World Championship Blacksmiths competition. 💪Craig said it perfectly: competition is target practice for farriers. That way, when we come to shoe your horse, we know we can hit our target! 🎯I am so excited to have an organization like the WCB to grow with- they give a home to all us farriers here in the US (and Canada!) who want to improve our skills!! ❤️🔥 I came 8th out of 25 Novice competitors.

Hi there! 👋 I’ve had quite a few new followers, so I thought I’d introduce myself again real quick. My name is Yvonne, and I am a Certified Farrier through the American Farriers Association, and am steadily working on my next certification- the Journeyman with the AFA. I’m the kind of person, that If I’m going to do a job, I’m going to do it the very best of my abilities, and if I’m not satisfied, I’m going to seek out people who can help me improve my abilities. It’s safe to say I absolutely LOVE my job and this trade; I wouldn’t trade it for the world. Now, Im not saying Im the best there ever was- my posts are just a snapshot of where I am right now- I know I still have a lifetime of learning to do. Follow along as I grow and learn everything I can about the hoof of the horse!
💪

How to find a patient farrier:

Train your horse to stand quietly
Train your horse to give a foot on command
Train your horse to hold up each foot for 3 min
Train your horse to be patient at the tie rail for 2 hours

Before the farrier arrives:
Excercise your horse
Play with your horse
Feed your horse
Groom your horse

A farrier will not be patient with you if you haven't held up your end of the bargain.

Things farriers ARE patient with:
New, hungry, excited, teachable horse owners
Young horses that are well handled and comfortable

Things farriers are NOT patient with:
Hungry horses
Irritable horses
Untrained horses
Muddy horses
Antsy horse brought straight from the stall
Late horse owners
Distracted handlers (chit chat, cell phone, treats, ...)

The Golden Mean ⭐️⭐️⭐️ or the Golden rule of proportion was set up by Mother Nature, I think we would do well not to contradict her. If you want to talk about “natural balance”, this is a good place to start. I am here to set your horse up for success!

Winter is coming and with it comes the rain and mud and boggy fields. The reality is in the wild horses would never choose to stand in saturated ground, they would roam and find more suitable grazing areas. As we enter these wetter months what should we know about the effects of the wet and often we...

Trimming Tuesday! Remember, our equine friends usually need a trim long before it “looks like it”, letting them get this long can cause lasting damage to the hoof capsule. Lucky for this sweet lady, and thanks to her owner, she handled her first trim like a pro and is now on a schedule 👍❤️
