Dr. Macdonald is the bomb! She saved my Sophie for many years and helps so many sweet pets with their cardiac disease. ♥️♥️
i am lucky to know her!
For this heart health month, we’re spotlighting Dr. Kristin MacDonald, Veterinary Specialist at VCA Animal Care Center of Sonoma County, and her love for cardiology!
“As a veterinary student, I felt that the cardiac cases in my internal medicine rotation were the most exciting and fulfilling. During my small animal internship at Michigan State University, my commitment to cardiology strengthened as a serious career aspiration. Here, I met one of the earliest grandfathers of cardiac surgery my mentor George Eyster, and I was exposed to exciting cardiac surgeries, procedures, and cases. I landed my top cardiology residency choice at UC Davis, where I loved the fast-paced, busy clinical cardiology service with world-renowned faculty. I was given an exciting opportunity to devise techniques in feline cardiac MRI in order to conduct a PhD study on the effects of ramipril in Maine C**n familial hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, which I completed as well as became boarded as a veterinary cardiologist.
Fast forward 20 years and I am happily working with my husband at VCA Animal Care Center of Sonoma County. I have enjoyed the personal relationships I have built with clients, many of whom I have cared for generations of their beloved pets.
By merging with VCA, this brought more exciting opportunities starting with the launch of the State of the Heart education modules and webinars, which I recently updated 10 years later. I have enjoyed teaching, while not in the classroom but to general practitioners at VCA continuing education meetings around the country, where I can provide them with clinically relevant information and tools to help them manage their cardiac patients. I still love the thrill of a hairy arrhythmia or rescuing a dyspneic dog in heart failure, and I am motivated to continue to learn new and exciting technologies in this ever-changing field.”
