I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again—you can’t get too proud of your horse.

If you’ve got a great horse underneath you, there’s a reason they became great. Just because things are going well doesn’t mean you can stop doing those things. It's a trap that I've fallen into before, and it can be hard to hold yourself accountable when all of a sudden your horse stops working.

Trust in yourself and your training, and keep yourself and your horse accountable. In 2009, I was in my Resistol Rookie season of ProRodeo. I won the rookie title at the end of the year, but finished 16th in the world by $1,197 because I messed up on my rodeo count and couldn't count some earnings at the end of the year. So, no NFR for me because I literally made a rookie mistake.

When the reporter asked me about it, I didn't blame anybody but myself for not making it to Vegas. I said, "I didn’t necessarily want to end up 16th, but I really didn’t head like I should have in the latter half of the year. If I head like I am supposed to, I’m going to make the Finals."

And I was right...when I started heading like I was suppoosed to, I went to Vegas. I'm fortunate enough to be headed back for number 11 this year with a great team on board.

Nobody starts at the top, and nobody's too good to make mistakes. Everybody had a rookie season. I'm thankful that 3S Services has been there through all the ups and downs from the very beginning of my career, and to those added on since then.
