Relaunch of GSSD!

I know some of you have been waiting for this, and i’m excited to announce that starting April 1st I am BACK to offer NEW training clients.

I took the past 6 months off to focus on my health, but now that i’m in a better place both physically and mentally, i’m excited to begin helping owner trainers again.

My schedule is VERY tight, so if you’re not able to meet on a specific time I unfortunately have no flexibility as I do work another full time job.

Positive Reinforcement/Force Free training only ⭐️

What I’m offering:
⭐️ Virtual Lessons
⭐️ Materials for purchase
⭐️ In-Person training (up to my discretion)

What we will not be offering moving forward:
❌ AKC testing
❌ Program Graduation
❌ Litter temperament testing
❌ Board and Training

I am focusing on offering more “part time” training guidence for owner trainers who need help with specific tasks or other issues.

Grand Slam Service Dogs is currently closed for new clients. Beginning in the spring of 2025, we will begin accepting service dog board and trains again. No in-person lessons for the foreseeable future!

Congrats to Victoria Haven Brinkley and her dog Spike for graduating from our extensive service dog program! She took our skills test and the public access test and passed standards under IAADP (International Association of Assistance Dog Partners) which is the sister organization to Assistance Dog International.

Victoria and Spike have worked SO hard to get to this point and he’s a phenomenal dog. 🦮♥️

When you come across someone who is blind/visually impaired who may have a guide dog with them:

* Treat a person who is blind the same as you would anyone else. People who are blind do the same things as you, but may use different accommodations to go about their day. We can hear you by the way!! 😉

* People who are blind/visually impaired are people first. Please talk directly to the person, not to their guide dog.

* Consider not asking about causes of the person's blindness. This is personal information.

* Please, Do not steer, pull, or grab someone who is visually impaired. If they are asking for help, do ask how they prefer to be helped. If you notice a dangerous situation, make sure to voice calmly and clearly what is going on.

* Be considerate. If you notice a spot or stain on someone’s clothing, tell them privately (just as you would like to be told).

* Give a clear word picture when describing things to an individual with a visual impairment. Include details such as colour, texture, shape and landmarks.

* Remember that their dog guide is a WORKING dog.
A guide dog is responsible for leading someone who is visually impaired. This person’s safety depends upon their dog’s alertness and concentration. Do not distract the dog from its job.

Remember blindness is a spectrum! Many people who are visually impaired have some sort of remaining vision.

The definition of visual impairment is “a decrease in the ability to see to a certain degree that causes problems not fixable by usual means, such as glasses.” Blindness is “the state of being unable to see due to injury, disease or genetic condition.”

Magpie was a service dog I placed last summer and her handler sends me updates on her often!

Here is one I got tonight.

“She is doing so well. She’s been to court and doctors and hospitals and churches and all kinds of places now! I am so proud of her and how much she has grown. She loves her sister Stelly. Stelly took some time to come around but now they wrestle and play tag and everything. She’s still her crazy self but when she puts on her vest, she knows she’s on duty ☺️”
