We are highlighting two pioneers in veterinary medicine, Dr. Alfreda Johnson Webb and Dr. Jane Hilton. They were the first two African-American members of the Women’s Veterinary Medicine Association with Dr. Hinton and Dr. Johnson Webb earning their Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degrees in 1949 from the University of Pennsylvania and Tuskegee University, respectively.

February is Spay - Neuter Awareness Month.

Reasons to Spay & Neuter Your Pet

1. Behavior Changes
Pets that are spayed or neutered have less fluctuation of their hormones. Therefore, they’re less likely to experience negative behavioral changes. Females won’t go in heat, and males will be less driven by females in heat. Most pets are calmer and experience fewer mating-driven urges (like marking or wandering). It’s a win-win for both you and your pet.

2. Prevents Overpopulation
In many areas, there are too many pets. Many animals are euthanized each year just because there aren’t any homes for them. While there are many ways to reduce this statistic, spaying and neutering to reduce the number of homeless animals is one of them. Spaying and neutering are vital to curbing overpopulation.

3. Improved Health
Spaying and neutering prevent some cancers in both cats and dogs. Furthermore, spayed and neutered animals may be less likely to run away, which reduces their likelihood of becoming injured or sick. Many hormonal-driven problems may be reduced, too.

Thank you.

Next week is Valentine’s Day 💕 and the U.S. alone is estimated to spend over $2 billion on flowers, many of which can be seriously toxic to our cats and dogs. Before you buy that beautiful bouquet for someone with pets, stop and check that you’re not accidentally gifting them something dangerous – their pets will thank you for it!

Feline Fact Friday ...

Did you know? ... ‼️Kittens as young as 4 months of age can get pregnant, have kittens at 6 months of age (when they're still a kitten themselves), and then have kittens every 9 weeks after that. 😳

✅️ This is why it's so important to spay/neuter a community cat immediately because the number of outdoor cats can get out of control VERY quickly!!!

⚠️ Kittens born in the spring can have their own litters by fall.

❤️ Spaying, neutering, vaccinating, and ear tipping community cats helps stabilize the colony, ends suffering, and prevents the births of more unowned, outdoor cats.

Let's talk about pet wellness.

Preventative care:
Regular checkups allow for the administration of necessary vaccinations and parasite prevention medications, protecting your pet from potentially life-threatening diseases.
Monitoring overall health:
A vet can track changes in your pet's weight, vital signs, and behavior to identify potential concerns.

February is Feline Fix by Five Month - a time to raise awareness that cats can reproduce at just FIVE months of age. Fix by Five to avoid unwanted litters!

What does this mean for you, a person who loves cats?

- If you have a kitten, NOW is the time to book your spay/neuter appointment. Schedules can fill quickly, and it may take time to get your appointment.

- Many low-cost clinics fix kittens as young as 2 months or a minimum weight of 2 pounds.

- You can help other cats by spreading the word! The United Spay Alliance has great resources for Veterinarians, Cat Fans, and even "Cat-Fluencers" alike that you can use to increase awareness about this important cause!

Remember, spaying and neutering your cat not only prevents unwanted litters, it also offers health benefits and stops undesirable behaviors like spraying and roaming! Learn more at www.FelineFixByFive.org !

Booking your pet for surgery? Ensure you check your email for crucial appointment details. We will provide pre-surgical and post-surgical requirements. Your pet should rest for 10-14 days. Ensure they do not lick or chew at their incision to prevent irritation and infection. Cage rest, leash walks, and minimal activity are recommended for dogs, while cats should be confined to a bathroom, spare bedroom, or laundry room to prevent excessive jumping, climbing, and running.

If you are concerned post surgery, reach out with any questions and provide pictures of the incision.
