Middleton, DNP and I wanted to ask for your help in sharing the story of sweet little Harriett; A Chihuahua who has survived the unimaginable past of animal abuse. Harriet’s care is sponsored and supported by the Jayne Boswell Florence Area Humane Society (FAHS). It was initially reported that Harriet was hit by a vehicle in August 2021 and was surrendered to the FAHS with a broken pelvis, neuroge
nic bowel and bladder incontinence (inability to control her bowel and bladder elimination), and severe neurological damage. It was uncertain if full cognitive function or mobility would return (and if so, in what capacity). After reviewing X-rays and other exam findings, it was determined that the permanent injuries Harriet sustained was not consistent with a motor vehicle accident. It was determined that Harriet was the victim of abuse, resulting her being permanent paralyzed from the diaphragm down. Based on the location of her spinal cord injury, Harriet is unable to bark, and she has no voluntary control of her back limbs, or urinary/bowel excretion. Since Harriet does not have any use of her lower extremities, she has to be repositioned every 1-2 hrs as to prevent any further skin breakdown. Due to the extent of her injuries, Harriet requires 24hr care in which my husband and I provide without a second thought. A GoFundMe account has been made because the financial cost of helping Harriet has been (and will continue) to accumulate. Currently, Harriet requires pads, special feeding devices, incontinence supplies, medications, etc. These expenses alone could deplete the shelter’s current funds. It is the hope that the community can help contribute to Harriet’s extensive medical needs as she is rehabilitated. Since being placed with Dr. Middleton and her family, Harriet has begun to regain strength and, with the donations made, have been able to get Harriet a wheelchair. This has given Harriet the ability to ambulate and have some sense normalcy. Harriet is currently under the primary care of Dr. Caroline Rommel, DVM and Dr. Kate Atwood, DVM and Owner of Cashua Veterinary Care in Florence, SC. She also sees Dr. Elaina Hutchinson, DMV at Marion Animal Hospital in Marion, SC as an alternate provider. For nearly six months, Harriet received specialty treatments from Dr. Donna Klucharich, DC with Klucharich Whole Body Healing in Florence, SC for chiropractic adjustments (spinal and pelvic), homeopathic treatment, and pulsating Electro Magnetic Field (PEMF) therapy. Dr. Donna and her team provide these treatments to Harriet, on average, 2-5 times every week. Our next goal is to raise money for Harriet to receive routine acupuncture treatments from Dr. Nikki Taylor, DVM with Sandy Memorial Animal Hospital in Hartsville, SC. It is our hope to begin these treatments with the help of your donations. Harriet is also a patient of Dr. Kendra Bohn, DACVIM, a Veterinary Neurologist with Columbia Veterinary Emergency Trauma and Specialty (CVET). At Harriet’s last appointment, she was given less then a 5% chance of regaining any mobility and/or chance to walk again. I am asking that ALL animal lovers consider giving any amount to aid in the rehabilitation of Harriet and improve her quality of life. We all would love to see Harriet happy, healthy, strong, and able to do basic everyday functions that all dogs should be able to do. If you would, please read the link below and share if you’re willing. We would greatly appreciate it! Thank you for your time and consideration. GoFundMe Link:
