Our philosophy is simply to provide horses with the best welfare management and most ethical humane training available based on current scientific research. We are constantly evolving in our approach and management to meet this criteria. Our horsemanship program, both on and off the horse, is focused on giving students of all ages a well rounded education and experience with our equines. We believe this creates a win-win scenario for both horse and human.

The Renegades enjoyed extra spoiling for the holiday. The horses started their day with Nickerdoodles added to breakfast for those that can have sugar in their treats. Daisy got extra alfalfa pellets with hers.

For dinner, the feral cats had extra canned food with their dry and lots of Churu drizzled on top. And, of course, the clean up crew (raccoon family and juvenile possum) showed up to finish the leftovers.

Foster cat room 1 had Churu with their dinner. Foster cat room 2 had lots of Temptation treats.
Foster cat room 3 indulged with Churu on the side.

And let’s not forget the 4 house cats that keep me in line. Lots of Churu on their lick mats.

And the humans- lots of Christmas cookies and goodies.

Hoping you all were spoiled as well!

Happy holidays from all of us here at Renegade Wind!

Welcome Zena and Stevie!

They actually arrived a couple weeks ago. Xena is on trial to see if she will be a good match for Stevie. I waited to put up a post pending the vet check. Like any horse mid teens, a few things were noted. We will keep an eye on those things and see how she does during the trial period.

Turnabout is fair play!
Throwback Thursday

A number of years ago we played around with drill team exercises. It’s always fun when a group of us get together and it helps build precision with the riders. In this video, two newcomers are starting to learn the basic patterns. Hopefully, in the future, there will be more of us and we’ll have the band back together.

THANK YOU to everyone who took a moment to acknowledge and or comment on Nick‘s passing. It is amazing to me how many lives he touched. All our pets are precious but sometimes there’s one that’s a little extra special. Nick was that one for me.

I mentioned in that post that Nick and I had many adventures and I would add misadventures as well. Here’s one that I hope gives you a laugh as I also laugh, thinking back on it.

We were boarding at Bobbi Rocow’s stable. It was a beautiful day to give a horse a bath. Nick was already trained to tie and I had worked with lines around his legs to make him comfortable if something knocked into him. And he had had numerous baths before. I took him to the outside wash rack and did the standard quick release knot to the ring. The hose was neatly coiled up in front of him. As I pulled the hose towards him to wet him down, the entire pile of coiled hose moved towards him as well. In typical equine split second response, he figured it was time to get out of Dodge. Next thing I knew, I was on my back, looking up at his belly and his back feet going over my body. I don’t remember if Nick broke his halter or his lead rope. I don’t remember how long it took us to catch him. I do remember that I never attempted to give him a bath at that washrack again. Nowadays, I would fix that by counter conditioning. But at that point in my journey I thought it would be better to leave well enough alone.

The day I’ve dreaded finally arrived. I had to say goodbye to Nick after 33+ years together. He was pushing 37 and Sunday he went down and nothing could get him back up. My friend, Sue, says the last gift we give our beloved animal companions is to let them pass in peace and dignity. And so, painfully and tearfully, I said thank you and goodbye for now.

TF Nickolai came into my life when he was 2 1/2 and I thought I knew so much but he soon showed me otherwise. Slowly I caught on and he continued to teach me along with other people all these years. He was a confidant, mentor, teacher but above all, my friend. Oh the stories I have to tell of our adventures! But I’ll save those for another time.

Originally purchased to do horse showing, Nick and I quickly got bored with circles and got back to the trail. We competed in a couple competitive trail rides with his bestie, Musky, and his partner, Sue. When I made the move to work with horses professionally, he was my lead lesson horse. He was still Arabian strong at 30, but I retired him. He deserved it. The last 6+ years he has spent wandering the property and supervising my work and the work of my employees. John Rooker dubbed him the mayor. He’s been my shadow as I did chores, a friend to a couple other older horses before they passed and company for any horse on stall rest. He took his new role very seriously and was paid in nicker doodles and peppermint puffs. Mornings would have him knocking on the bathroom door for a treat if I was a little slow doling one out.

It won’t be the same not hearing his soft nicker in the mornings and the shuffle of his hooves coming to greet me. No more kisses or high fives. No more games of soccer or catch or basketball.

Rest in peace my sweet prince. Til we meet again and ride through the meadows in paradise you will live on in my heart.

I posted about this pair, Sammie and Promise, a short while back. Promise had a cancerous growth inside her lower eyelid and had it removed at Cornell. Fortunately, they did not have to take the eye. However, after surgery the eyelids no longer met. Our local vet suggested the horse version of Botox to plump up the lower lid so the two would meet. It was a success! In this picture, Promise is snoozing while Sammie keeps her company, waiting for the sedation to wear off.

Today was a sad day here at Renegade Wind. We had to say goodbye to China. Plagued by periodic bouts of asthma during her 12 years here, this year we couldn’t bring her out of it. Numerous courses of steroids didn’t give the lasting effect we were hoping for and the poor girl struggled in her breathing. As a friend once said to me, the last gift we can give our beloved pets is a dignified peaceful end.

This photo is of China (bay) and her bestie, Jewel, who we lost last year. I’m picturing them running together like this again. Two very special mares reunited in a heavenly pasture. RIP sweet girl. You will be missed.

🚩🐎 The Devastation Hiding In Plain Sight 🐎🚩

I saw a photo today that stopped me cold.

A horse in an “agility” groundwork event.

Head low.
Eyes half-shut.
Ears twisted back in that vacant, disconnected way.

And this wasn’t someone sharing the photo as a warning. This was the promotional shot for the event.

That’s how blind we’ve become.

People will say, “Oh, it’s just a moment in time.”

No. It’s not.

That expression is not a flicker. It’s a truth. A horse that’s switched off. A horse whose spirit has been dulled so much that this is what gets called “training” or "connection.”

Sure, horses can be genuinely interested in something new. Show them an umbrella or a tarp, and they’ll look with curiosity and may want to investigate. But that’s just it — it’s a period of time because the object is new. It doesn’t mean they’re looking for us to turn it into a system of tests and patterns.

That doesn’t bring meaning to a horse’s life. It doesn't make the intrinsically braver.

It desensitises a being who is naturally sensitive. It shuts them down.

And the tragedy is, people can’t even see it. They look at that photo and see “obedience,” or “progress,” or — the worst one — they see “fun.” Completely oblivious to the horse.

This is the cost of our entertainment, our need for structure, our need to control.

When did we stop asking: what matters to the horse?

Because I promise you this: it’s not weaving cones, walking over or under tarps or jumping plastic barrels. It’s safety. Connection. Freedom. The right to live without being turned into a lifeless prop for our activities.

That photo broke my heart 💔. And what breaks it even more is knowing that thousands of people will see it — and never notice the devastation written plain across that horse’s face.

We owe them better.
