Did you know that of the 55 different kinds of snakes in Mississippi, only six are venomous? Most people are uncomfortable around snakes and may be uncertain of their ability to identify them. Here are some ways to identify venomous vs. nonvenomous snakes:
🐍 Facial Pits - Some venomous snakes will have facial pits. Snakes with these organs are collectively called pit vipers.
🐍 Cat-Eyes - Rattlesnakes, cottonmouths, and copperheads all have slit-like pupils (cat-eyes). Native nonvenomous snakes have pupils which are round.
🐍 Single Scale Rows - If the scales crossing the underside of the tail are made up of single rows, the snake is venomous. Native Mississippi nonvenomous snakes have a double row under the tail.
🐍 Rattle on Tail - three of our six venomous snakes are rattlesnakes
