Honor your senior dog! You adapt activities and challenges to meet the new needs and possibilities. Dogs live in the present so for them these are the new realities, they adapt and enjoy life, help them enjoy it more.

Engaging your senior dog in play and mind games, like food puzzle toys and scent games, improves their quality of life and overall health. Dogs learn new things no matter their age. Emma is 12 1/2 y/o and we have adapted some routines, we add more interactive toys and we have made her beds better. Many times she prefers the bare floor to a bed but she has the choice. Make it fun for everyone!

Long leash relaxing walks, getting your dog to enjoy the surroundings safely but allowed to roam, sniff and explore. Think of your dog’s walk more as an outing than a walk, focus on them being allowed to be a dog, even in an urban setting. She is WONDERFUL!
We visited Cecile Bakery in South Miami and was the best! Everyone loved her and she loved everyone.
She is overweight, she needs to lose about 15 lb but I guessed a couple of tiny bites would not make a big difference. She needs a healthy diet and exercise to lose that extra weight, that's a nice project indeed! She sometimes finds it hard to get up on the tile floor as she is too heavy, she'll feel som much better once she is on her ideal weight.
Then we walked around South Miami for a couple of blocks, she met the people at Nikki's Beachhouse and of course she won everyone's hearts.
She did great at my house, she explored the backyard for a while.
Then she took a long nap, choosing the cooler floor over my dog's softer bed. I actually edited this video with her sleeping by my side

Seniors are so precious! since they spend more hours sleeping than younger dogs and their energy, as well as sight, hearing and physical hability dwindle, those playful spurts of enegry are to be treasured. Emma is 12 years old and she does love to play with the Jolly Egg, you can see how happy she is.

So proud of young Kira and her family! she was adopted barely two months ago and she has made such an amazing progress! She loves to put that brain into work as well as her athletic skills. Urban obstacles and puzzle toys are what she loves engaging with, besides cuddling with the family and playing with her 4-legged brother Hershey.
Providing your dog with enrichment activities gets their mind working and busy, dogs are so smart! Tapping into their innate abilities and making sure they have an outlet to channel their energy is one of the best things you can do for them.

And on the second night at the hotel in Douro there was a second pup! Rescued two months ago, he was very skittish and scared of humans ans he is now willing to engage and request affection. He is called Fluffy and the black and white Border Collie mix is called Oreo.

Dogs in Portugal. I don’t like to judge, this young boy, I guess around 8 months old, was loose on the street in Coimbra close to our hotel. We met him a couple of times so someone must have been feeding him. He did come to me when I called him but he was very skittish, I could not pet him though he did approach willingly. I did not spend enough time with him to gain his trust nor did I have any treats to speed up the process. You can tell by his body language how on the alert he was.
When meeting an unknown dog, especially on the street, do not impose yourself. Let the dog come to you. If they want to be petted they’ll get close. Watch his body language, look for relaxed ears, mouth and body. If they allow you to pet her the protocol is “ pet-pet-pet” and stop. If they want more they will solicit it, otherwise they will retreat and go on their way. You should not feel “hurt”, she does not know you or she is even unfamiliar with kind human touch. Never let a kid approach an unknown dog! ALWAYS stand between the dog and your kids. Follow all the protocols yourself and MAYBE then let the kid pet the dog.

When my client sends me photos of her dogs actively using interactive toys, and then they look so happy and relaxed, they literally passed out after a great session! A tired dog (not an exhausted one) is a good dog. Exercise teir bodies and their brains and relationships and interactions improve dramatically.

A good game of tug-of war is always a great way to engage your dog in play and to strengthen the bod bewteen you two. It takes two to tug! from puppies to senior dogs, like Emma here, as long as you both play by the rules: use a safe tug toy, the human just offers resistance and does not jerk the dog's body or neck, the dog respects the human and lets go when asked to DROP IT, tug-of-war one of the best activities for you and your dog.
