Summer is here, and Critter Camp at Houston SPCA is in full swing! Our kids are having a blast with all the hands-on activities we have planned for them. They were even able to meet a few our horses. Their time at camp is inspiring them to become the Veterinarians of tomorrow!

🐴🚨 Rescue: Horse Saved from Severe Neglect! 🚨🐴

On Saturday, Houston SPCA Animal Cruelty Investigators rescued a horse suffering from severe neglect in Dayton, Texas. This poor horse had a deeply painful, embedded rope in his neck, causing significant distress and injury.

Due to the severity of the wound, we had to blur the images. The horse was rushed to our Equine Rescue Center for immediate veterinary care.

This rescue underscores the importance of reporting animal cruelty and neglect. If you see an animal in distress, please don't hesitate to reach out for help.

Adoption Update: Ellie Moo 🐄

It's been a year since we rescued Ellie Moo, a neonatal calf who needed intensive veterinary care, including bottle feeding. Found in deplorable conditions alongside her severely emaciated mom, Ellie has since been adopted into a new home! Thanks to the dedication of our team and the support from animal lovers like you, she is now healthy and thriving. Check out her latest photo to see her incredible transformation.

🚨 Rescue Update: English Bulldog Saved 🚨

Over the weekend, our cruelty investigators rescued an English Bulldog living in heartbreaking conditions. She was confined to a patio covered in f***s, suffering from Cherry Eye, and very underweight. 😢

Cherry Eye is a condition where the gland in the third eyelid becomes inflamed and protrudes. It can be painful and, if left untreated, may lead to further complications. Our veterinary team is already working on treating this condition, along with addressing her weight and overall health.

🌟Starting your Monday off on the right hoof... Meet Crystal! 🌟

Crystal is an off-the-track Thoroughbred who came into our care through a cruelty investigation in March. She arrived with six other emaciated horses, weighing only 848 pounds. Thanks to the dedicated care of our team, Crystal has gained nearly 300 pounds and now weighs a healthy 1,110 pounds!

This beautiful horse has a sweet temperament and is ready to find a new home. With the right family, Crystal has the potential to become a fantastic show horse.

🌟 Adoption Spotlight 🌟

Meet Yippee! This incredible horse was adopted on February 11th, 2024, gaining 130 lbs while in our care! 🐴

When Yippee was adopted, she was "green broke," but her dedicated owners have spent many hours training and riding her. Today, Yippee has transformed into an amazing show pony, thanks to their love and commitment.

🚨 Graphic Image Warning 🚨

This past Friday evening, amidst Houston's recovery from the storm and with the Houston SPCA campus still without power, our cruelty investigators rescued three horses with severe, untreated open wounds. These horses were found in awful conditions, on a property that was nothing more than a mud pit, without proper enclosure or care.

Despite the challenges, our dedicated team managed to transport the horses to the Houston SPCA barn. By flashlight, our amazing Barn, Investigations, and Veterinary teams worked to treat the horses' wounds and provide the necessary care. Their commitment and willingness to do whatever it takes, no matter the circumstances, is truly commendable.💪❤️

Petey's journey began with uncertainty, but thanks to our dedicated team, he is now safe. Watch as he races through our campus barn. Just a few more weeks and he will be ready for adoption.

Meet Avenger. Rescued by our Cruelty Investigators, he arrived extremely malnourished with neglected hooves and severe dental issues. Sadly, many horses face similar conditions when they come into our care—emaciated, struggling to walk, and clinging to a small chance of hope.

Remember the story of Hudson? When our Cruelty Investigators rescued him, he was in dire condition. At 18 years old, he was a mere shadow of himself—frail, 300 pounds underweight, and barely able to stand. Our veterinary team provided vital care while our Equine and Farm experts worked tirelessly to help Hudson regain strength through specialized training. Six months later, Hudson found a new home with a loving family. Meet Arthur! Our team of Cruelty Investigators rescued this sweet guy after a reported dog attack. Unfortunately, Arthur sustained a soft tissue injury to his right hind leg, making it challenging for him to bear any weight on it.

Our team of Cruelty Investigators recently rescued Easter, a 30-year-old Quarter Horse, after receiving reports of neglect. Upon examination, our veterinary team rated her body condition a one out of nine because she was severely underweight. Easter is also blind in one eye, and her hooves are cracked and overgrown. She will remain in our care until she has fully recovered.

Meet Cobbler, the turkey! 🦃💙 She was rescued by our Injured Animal Ambulance. When she arrived on campus, she had a wound on her chest above her right wing and multiple areas of complete feather loss across her body. Under our care, Cobbler has started to regrow her feathers and has become more active and social. She also enjoys getting scratches behind her ears! 🎉🎉

We are looking forward to the journey ahead as she continues to heal and thrive.

This week we say goodbye to Chief Community and Development Officer Jo Sullivan! We are all sad to see her go, as are all the animals! She always had strawberries and carrots to share with the residents of the barn, so it was time for a summer "pignic" as a last hoorah! We will ALL miss you, Jo!

We have some new faces on the farm today! These two senior Belgians came to us as an owner surrender. They were originally used as a carriage team in downtown Houston many years ago. We are gonna work our magic to get them back to a healthy weight and would love to find them a home together. Stay tuned! ❤️🐴🐴
