The temperatures are getting dangerous for people and pets this week. Learn the signs of heat distress, keep your dog walks to cooler parts of the day, and ensure pets have access to fresh, cool water at all times. Remember, if it's too hot for you to be outside, it's too hot for your pets.

The Safe Outdoor Dogs Act requires that pets not be left out in extreme temperatures, so reach out to your local humane law enforcement if you see an animal in danger. More info here: https://www.thln.org/a_brand_new_day

February 28 is World Spay Day! Today we recognize the importance of spaying/neutering our pets. There are many benefits and it can save lives!

Spaying or neutering reduces the risk of the following health conditions:

Uterine infection: Known as a pyometra, this is a potentially life-threatening condition that can be very expensive to treat. It is 100% preventable if your pet is spayed.

Mammary Tumors (breast cancer): Over one-half of all mammary tumors are malignant and can spread to other areas of the body. Spaying reduces the risk of these tumors.

Testicular Cancer: This cancer, as well as prostatitis (an infection causing malignant or benign swelling of the prostate), can be greatly reduced with early neutering.

Behavioral Problems: Unwanted behaviors such as dominance, aggression, marking territory, and wandering can be avoided with spaying or neutering.

Spaying or neutering helps with overpopulation.

There are more puppies and kittens in shelters than there are people willing to provide them with love and care. Sadly, many are euthanized. Spaying or neutering can help reduce the number of animals in need of homes.

Spayed and neutered pets live healthier and longer lives! Consider the benefits to your pet and the community, and ask your veterinarian when to spay or neuter your pet.

🥶🐶🙀WIND-CHILL TEMPERATURE IN 10s HEADING OUR WAY STARTING THIS THURSDAY 12/22/22: PLAN FOR YOUR PETS NOW! 🥶🐶🙀 OUTDOOR PETS & THE NEW LAW IN EFFECT REGARDING TO OUTDOOR TETHERING DURING EXTREME WEATHER & OTHERWISE.

* If it is too cold for you, it is probably too cold for your pet. During inclement weather, keep your pets inside where they can stay warm and safe and consider giving short-haired or smaller dogs a coat and booties to wear during short walks. Ensure your pet has a warm place to sleep that is off the floor with extra bedding and away from drafts. If you see symptoms of frostbite, such as discoloration, swelling, or skin ulcers, contact your veterinarian immediately.
* All pets will need more food and water on cold days, particularly if your power goes out. Colder weather means more calories are expended to stay warm, so it’s vital to keep them properly hydrated.
* During the winter, outdoor cats sometimes seek shelter underneath cars. Bang loudly on the car hood before starting the engine to give cats a chance to escape.

Please note The Safe Outdoor Dogs Act (SB5) (https://www.thln.org/a_brand_new_day) notably bans the use of heavy chains to restrain a dog, and it requires adequate shelter from rain, hail, sleet, snow, high winds, and extreme high and low temperatures. Additionally, restraints must be properly sized, without weights, and allow for proper breathing. A restrained dog must also have 10 feet of space for movement, or five times the length of the dog from nose to the base of the tail. Violations would be a Class C misdemeanor for the first offense and a Class B misdemeanor for any subsequent offense. Arguably the most significant change wrought by the Safe Outdoor Dogs Act is removing the 24-hour warning period that allowed bad actors to flout the law. Officers can take immediate action for tethered dogs in distress from now on.

BE THE VOICE OF THE VOICELESS, IF YOU SEE AN ANIMAL CHAINED OUTDOORS WITH NO SHELTER; BE SURE TO DOCUMENT WITH PICTURES OR VIDEOS (INCLUDING A VISUAL OF THE OUTSIDE TEMPERATURE AS IN ON CAR TEMPERATURE DISPLAY PANEL) TO SHOW TO THE AUTHORITIES & CONTACT ENTITIES BELOW IMMEDIATELY!!! If they are unfamiliar with the law, please refer officers to SB 5 (https://legiscan.com/TX/text/SB5/id/2437834/Texas-2021-SB5-Enrolled.html).

4TH OF JULY PET SAFETY: PLAN NOW! **MOST PETS LOST AT THIS TIME OF THE YEAR, NEVER TO BE REUNITED AGAIN!! 😭 Please help your dogs & cats stay safe by being proactive and setting them up for success with regards to frightening fireworks.

• Bring your pets inside
• put them on leashes to potty even in fenced in yards & have them wear contact info (a rabies tag alone will not help as the vet will be closed)
• Be in a quiet room with background noise
• Get your dog a nice safe chew to keep them distracted

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has issued an important warning to Midwestern Pet Foods after inspections of its facilities revealed serious safety violations.

Help us find injured rescued Lab Mix Icarus saved off death row from shelter

Injured 4-year old 47-lb Black Lab Mix Icarus was saved from death row from one of the Houston shelters in the nick of time. He has just been neutered and had paw surgery and got away from the vet clinic on Tuesday, 11/5/19. He has a blue collar on but is not chipped and seems to keep on traveling along Brays Bayou. He is skittish, so please do not attempt to get, but PLEASE call 832-228-1175 or 979-324-1503 with any sightings as darters are on standby.
