Retic breeding has its ups and downs.

The good news: Daenerys is doing great! She’s had 2 meals and a great shed. She has her energy and her appetite back. I missed interacting with her the last few months.

On February 9th, Dany laid a clutch of eggs..

The not so good news.. she laid 7 eggs and 9 slugs (unfertilized eggs). I knew from the moment I peeked under her coils, something wasn’t right. The eggs didn’t candle well and she’s never given me any slugs before. Over the last 3 weeks, 4 eggs have gone bad. That leaves 3 in the incubator now and I don’t have high hopes for them going the distance.

Why do I share this? Breeding isn’t all sunshine and rainbows. I appreciate the few retic breeders out there that share their successes AND their failures (you know who you are!). They’ve given me the courage to admit this clutch hasn’t gone the way I would have liked. It could have been incomplete fertilization or parthenogenesis.. hard to say for sure but it certainly is some bad luck. And that happens when you’re dealing with living things. We need to take the bad with the good and find an opportunity to learn from it.

I’m just forever grateful that this momma is doing well. I just love her to pieces. ♥️

I’m a mother of a boisterous 3 year old; Fiancé to a super supportive guy, who also happens to keep green tree pythons; And a full time energy professional as well! Life is crazy and busy and so fulfilling. My animals are a big part of my life and I really pride myself in providing the best possible care and husbandry for them.
