Volunteer Spotlight: Meet Donna, pictured here with India, a sweet and shy dog rescued by one of our cruelty investigators. 🐾 India is a Shepherd mix that has been with us since June 5. Donna, a retired school teacher, started volunteering with us in August 2023 and loves helping both people and animals. ❤️ Her favorite task is walking dogs. Donna says a great fit for a volunteer would be anyone who loves animals. Thirteen rehabilitated Mississippi Kites were just released in Sugar Land as they were among the 1,800 wild animals brought into the care of the Houston SPCA Wildlife Center after Hurricane Beryl slammed into the Texas coast.

Like so many of our other storm victims, these Mississippi Kites came in as babies and were treated by expert veterinary and wildlife staff over the last couple of weeks. The young birds spent time in our Outdoor Flight Complex to build their muscles and body mass to prepare for their migratory journey back to South America over the next month.

⚠️Cruelty Caught on Camera⚠️ The Houston SPCA is searching for the person who threw a lab mix puppy off a third-story apartment balcony on Tuesday after it was captured on a security camera. Thankfully, the puppy landed onto the bushes below and limped away before one of our cruelty investigators brought her back to campus for veterinary exams and care. 🐾 Kitten Journey: Meet Lilac! 🐾

Join us in a behind-the-scenes journey of little Lilac after she arrived at the Houston SPCA campus. It all begins in our kitten nursery at the tender age of 2 weeks. Here, she is kept warm in an incubator while staff and volunteers hand-feed her formula for several weeks. Watch as she grows, learns, and prepares for her new life. 🐱💕

So far, we've cared for 366 orphaned kittens this season. Stay tuned for updates on Lilac and her journey to the adoption center!

🐾 We partnered with the Veterinary Tech Institute to help 30 of our rescued dogs while training future veterinary technicians. 🐶 Students will learn spay/neuter procedures, and in return, VTI will help us find loving homes for each of these dogs. 👏👏👏

🎉 Adoption Update: Cricket! 🎉

Our longest-staying puppy, Cricket, a 6-month-old Shepherd mix, has found his forever home after 63 days with us! This young, enthusiastic pup who loves the outdoors, playing with toys, and getting lots of attention is now happily settled with his new family. 🐶💕

🐾 Adoption Spotlight: Cheeto the Cat! 🐾

Cheeto found his forever home, and we couldn't be happier for this sweet kitty!
His new family shared: "We adopted Cheeto 3 months ago and my husband and I now can't imagine when he wasn't here. He loves his cat tower and squealing at the lizards that run up our windows. He absolutely loves just lying in one of our laps or being carried around. Thank you, Houston SPCA, for all you do!"

🚨 Warning: Collars That Are Too Tight Cause Severe Harm 🚨

Meet Tina, a beautiful German Shepherd mix we rescued just a week ago. Tina suffered from a severe embedded collar, but thanks to our dedicated team, she is on the road to recovery. 🐾💖

👉 An embedded collar occurs when a collar becomes too tight and cuts into the pet's skin, often due to the pet growing or gaining weight. It can cause severe pain, infection, and long-term damage.

🔗 How to Prevent Embedded Collars:

1. Regular Checks: Frequently check your pet's collar to ensure it's not too tight. You should be able to fit two fingers comfortably between the collar and your pet's neck.

2. Adjust as Needed: Puppies and kittens grow quickly. Regularly adjust the collar's size as your pet grows.

3. Proper Fit: Choose a collar that fits well and is made of comfortable, breathable material.

"We renamed Poppy to Katie, and she is settling in quite nicely! She has instantly become a member of our family and is loved completely. Katie is super sweet, loves to play with her older brother (a 9-year-old rescued beagle mix) or the many toys lying around, and adores cuddling. Here are a few pictures of Katie, mostly when she has just about worn herself out. It's hard to get pictures of her playing with her brother or trying to be my lap dog 😂."

Equine Safe & Dry

While caring for the nearly 1,000 animals on their Campus for All Animals, the Houston SPCA was also preparing for Beryl on Sunday by moving 18 rescued horses over to their Equine Rehabilitation Center. A total of 24 horses, including two Clydesdales, 3 pigs, 12 chickens and a peacock are all now safely resting on their campus to ride out this storm.

Have Chimney Swifts in Your Chimney? If you have Chimney Swifts nesting in your chimney in Houston, Texas, don’t worry! These amazing birds are only temporary guests. Chimney Swifts typically stay in their nesting sites until late summer to early fall, after which they will migrate to South America. These birds play a crucial role in controlling insect populations and are a protected species. If you find Chimney Swifts in your chimney, it's best to let them be. 🚨 Animal Cruelty Investigation: Kitten Set on Fire🚨 Early this morning, Houston SPCA’s animal ambulance responded to a heartbreaking scene. Witnesses reported seeing a kitten deliberately set on fire. The kitten was brought to the Houston SPCA Animal Hospital for care, but due to the severity of her injuries, she was humanely euthanized. The Houston SPCA Animal Cruelty Investigators and their law enforcement partners Harris County Constable Precinct 1, discovered that the suspects lived in a home with other animals. Concerned for their safety, Precinct 1 obtained a civil seizure warrant to seize any animals on the property. Nine animals, including seven puppies, were found in deplorable conditions in the backyard of the residence, locked in cages without access to water or food. These animals are now in the care of the Houston SPCA, where they are receiving the medical attention and care they desperately need. We urge our community to stay vigilant and report any signs of animal cruelty. Pileated Woodpecker

We've been privileged to care for three Pileated Woodpecker chicks after they were found fallen from their nest. We're excited to share pictures and videos of their journey from nestlings to fledglings as they grow under our watchful eye. These beautiful birds will remain in our care until they're ready to be released back into the wild. Did you know? Pileated Woodpeckers are the largest woodpecker species in North America, with striking red crests and distinctive drumming sounds that echo through the forest.
