Houston Chow Chow Connection is a collaborative of dog lovers and rescuers that dedicate their time, efforts and talents toward helping to rescue Chow Chows in need. We are an entirely volunteer-driven 501(c)(3) organization with no administrative costs. Our rescue traces its origins back several years to the works of Dianne Watson. Dianne dedicated much of her young life to saving homeless Chows

in north and west Texas. In her memory, Houston Chow Chow Connection continues her passion of uniting Chow Chows with perfect forever families. HCCC began rescuing in 2013 and rehomed over 200 dogs since inception, including 90 in 2015! Our dogs found homes on the east and west coasts of the U.S. and have traveled north and south! As we continue to rescue and rehome more and more Chows, our costs grow. As many of you may know, rescuing animals takes money. Not only is there the typical care and upkeep (including food and general veterinary care), some of our rescues need specialized treatments. At HCCC we don’t pick and choose the dogs we rescue – they pick us. While the majority of our rescues are healthy, we never turn our backs on homeless Chows with physical issues or disabilities. Some of our incoming babies have suffered long-term and extensive neglect. New HCCC dogs may require spay/neuter, shaving due to extensive matting, entropion and/or hip replacement surgeries, treatment of skin problems and a variety of other issues. We acquire much of our financing through donations and fund-raisers. All funds from your donations or Etsy item purchases will go directly to our rescues. 🌸 Meet Mushy: The Sweetest Softie 🌸

Mushy just arrived in our care, and we’re already smitten. With her fluffy, cloud-like coat and calm, gentle spirit, Mushy is a Chow/Samoyed mix who seems to be built for cozy afternoons and soft landings. At around five years old, she recently left behind her first home, and while she’s still adjusting, she’s settling in beautifully.

Mushy is a true “old soul”—house-trained, crate-trained, and a graceful leash-walker. She’s great with kids and cats, and loves a peaceful setting, though she’s a little picky about other dogs in her space. (Think of her as the ultimate introvert: friendly but appreciative of her alone time!)

Barry Cuta, now Zazu, is thriving in Colorado with his new family! Once a scared little pup, he’s now full of confidence, joy, and love. His mom says, 'Zazu came into my life at the perfect time! Since joining us, Yogi has come a long way! He started with a non-chow rescue, but his reactivity made it hard to find a home. That’s when we stepped in to give him the second chance he deserves! 🐾

His foster mom says Yogi is a total cuddlebug who LOVES attention. He might be a little clingy, but that’s only because he wants to be your new best friend. Like any Chow, he’s got strong protective instincts and is always on alert when visitors come around. He’s also a quick learner and already knows ‘Sit,’ ‘Stay,’ and ‘Release.’ Oh, and his favorite thing? Belly rubs and rolling around like the goofball he is! 🐾❤️

This handsome red boy now ready for adoption, has come a long way since his shelter days, and he’s loving life in his foster home with Roseana! At 3 years old and 50 lbs, Carmello is all about staying close by—especially when it’s time to put shoes on! He’s playful with his red heeler friend, loves men, and free-roams the house during the day. You’ll often find him guarding his foster mom’s bedroom door.

Carmello knows how to “sit,” is house-trained with a doggy door, and did wonderfully at the vet, letting everyone handle him. He’s even got a funny quirk—howling at passing fire trucks and trying to eat kibble while it’s being poured! 🚒🧡

This sweet boy is looking for a home with a fenced yard (he hasn’t tried to dig or escape) and someone who can keep up with his love for exploring. When meeting male dogs he does need someone who can read body language. However, he gets along with both male and female dogs. Let’s welcome Cinnabon, a gentle soul with a heartbreaking story. She was found wandering alone, left to fend for herself in a neighborhood where she didn’t belong. It’s clear she was abandoned, discarded like she didn’t matter. But one look into her soulful eyes, and you’ll see the scars of a life she’s tried so hard to leave behind.

Katina, her foster mom, saw Cinnabon’s quiet desperation and couldn’t turn away. She stepped up, offering this lost girl a refuge when she needed it most. Now, under Katina’s care, Cinnabon is finally experiencing kindness—something she probably hasn’t felt in a long time.

Cinnabon’s heart is as big as her name suggests. She’s sweet, obedient, and desperate to please, as if hoping that being "good" might mean she gets to stay this time. She walks gently on a leash, follows commands, and waits patiently for her food, trusting her new humans even after all she’s endured. But adjusting to her new life isn’t easy. She’s learning her place with her foster family’s chihuahua and two cats, but sometimes her excitement gets the better of her—perhaps a little afraid she’ll be forgotten again if she’s not seen.

And maybe the most heartbreaking detail? Cinnabon has no tail. We don’t know why, but it’s almost a symbol of what’s been taken from her. Yet here she is, resilient, hopeful, waiting for someone who will finally see her as she deserves to be seen: whole, worthy, and deserving of a love that will never abandon her.

Looking at him now, you wouldn’t know it now, but Major’s journey here hasn’t been easy. Rescued from the Dallas Shelter just in time, he was labeled as “difficult” and nearly overlooked because of his size and breed. They saw a big Chow and didn’t see the dog beneath. But when he came to us, this “challenging” dog was gentle as could be, taking treats so softly and giving the sweetest kisses as if to say, “Thank you.”

Today, Major’s safe with his foster family in Oklahoma, and he’s blossomed. He’s about 70 pounds of pure, joyful energy—a mix of Chow spirit and maybe a touch of Golden Retriever or Lab playfulness. He loves everyone who comes to visit, men and women, kids who can handle his size, all with a tail wag and a warm welcome. He’s smart, too—he’s already mastered “sit” and does his best to be well-behaved.

It’s been amazing to watch him come out of his shell, but he’s still got some shyness in new places. Major needs a patient who understands what it’s like to feel misunderstood and judged. Cats might be a question mark for him, and he’s got a playful urge to chase squirrels, but he’s been incredibly friendly to all his human visitors.

Major deserves a home where he’ll be seen for the wonderful, loving soul he truly is. If you’re someone who believes in second chances and can offer a gentle hand, Major is waiting to meet you. He’s ready for his forever home, a place where he can finally relax and just be the incredible dog he’s meant to be.

Bagheera’s biggest dream is still waiting to come true: a forever family to call her own. This lovely 4-year-old black Chow has been with us since February 2024, and in her photos, she’s living in the moment—frolicking in the autumn grass, showing off her highlights in a beautiful new setting.

After a heartbreaking start in life, used solely as a breeding dog and denied companionship, Bagheera is now discovering what it’s like to be cherished and loved. For the first time, she’s feeling kindness and warmth, and she’s starting to blossom.

Casca – From Wandering the Streets to Stealing Hearts!

This sweet girl was found wandering in Denton, TX, and though a Good Samaritan tried to find her family, no one came forward. That’s when Ashley and Devan stepped in, opening their hearts and home to foster her – and we couldn’t be more grateful for their kindness! 💛

On her first day, Casca was a little shy, especially around men, but she’s made amazing strides since! She now warms up quickly with gentle encouragement and a treat or two. She even lets her foster’s partner take her for walks, showing off a few tail wags and gladly accepting pets. And her grooming has gone well, with her mats brushed out and her coat looking beautiful. 🌟 Casca will be spayed soon to ensure she’s happy and healthy for her future family.

Casca’s playful side shines on her mini park days, where she zips around the open space like a pro, showing just how fast she can go! She’s a fantastic car companion, loving her view from the window. While she’s not a fan of the crate, she’s well-behaved when left out – just make sure to pick up any stray shoes or clothes. Casca is wonderfully gentle with food and toys and will patiently share her space and attention.

🎉 The Puppies Have Arrived! 🎉

It’s been a whirlwind week, but we’re thrilled to announce that Junebug is officially a proud mama! After being saved from the OKC shelter just in time, this brave girl has given birth to a beautiful, healthy litter! 💛

As we celebrate this new life, we also have bittersweet news to share:

The Good News: Little Clefford, one of our cleft palate pups, has been accepted by Texas Cleft Pup Rescue! He’s in great hands and will receive the specialized care he needs to flourish. 💙

The Heartbreaking News: Sadly, we discovered too late that there was a second pup with a cleft palate. Despite our best efforts, we couldn’t save this little one, and our Seismic Swarm is now down to eight. 💔

🐾 Meet Warrior, still on his quest to find a forever home. Available for adoption in Austin, TX, this brave soul has endured a long and challenging journey. Warrior is looking for a loving home with other canine companions to help him feel safe and secure.

For those who are new to his story, Warrior was discovered at a flea market in Cleveland, TX, after months of abandonment and mistreatment. Though some kind strangers offered him scraps, others cruelly hurled rocks at him. Alone and in pain, Warrior fought to survive until a devoted rescuer intervened. They found him with an embedded harness causing painful sores, and he was suffering from untreated wounds that had begun to fester.

Thanks to his foster dad Jarad, Warrior is now healing—both physically from his medical issues and emotionally from his PTSD. In a remarkable sign of progress, Warrior recently allowed Jarad to pet him for the first time, a huge step toward rebuilding his trust in humans. He even joined Jarad for dinner out and handled it like a champ!

Imagine a sweet Chow abandoned alone in a hotel parking lot with only a bag of food and no collar. After her owners drove away according to some witnesses, she stayed behind, waiting and hoping they would return, but BARC arrived before we could. She was then tagged and we we’re able to get her. When Sophia found her, Bon bon was so distressed that she cried and wouldn’t leave the spot, still waiting for her owners to come back. Thanks to Sophia’s urgent post and the caring help of her foster dad, Harrison, we were able to rescue Bon Bon—thanks to the hundreds of people who shared her story! Life moves pretty fast—don’t blink or you might miss Laquinta! This sweet 1-year-old, weighing 45 pounds, has come a long way and is ready to start a new chapter. But since her last update, Lala is ready to turn the page and start a new chapter—she’s officially available for adoption! (📍Magnolia, TX) For those unfamiliar with her story, Lala came to us from the New Braunfels shelter, carrying the marks of her past—severe hair loss on her back, likely caused by chemical burns. Despite it all, she remains incredibly gentle and loving. We’ve learned she’s afraid of thunder, but her little thunder jacket helps calm her fears. Water on her back still brings tears to her eyes, a painful reminder of the trauma she’s survived. Yet through it all, Lala has shown nothing but love and patience, thanks to the incredible care of her Super Foster Mom, Dawn! Her hair has grown back beautifully, a symbol of her strength. Lala is very people-oriented, always eager to be close to someone who will finally give her the love she deserves. Three new puppies have arrived at HCCC, and it’s been a chaotic week as we navigate the constant demands of rescue work. These three girls, who came from Henderson, TX, have touched our hearts. Their story is unclear: first, we were told someone couldn’t keep them, and then we heard they were abandoned on someone’s property. At around 8 weeks old, we’ve named them Bacon, Lettuce, and Tomato—an adorable trio with distinct personalities. Unfortunately, Bacon doesn’t get along well with the other two. It’s not her fault; her sisters just don’t seem to accept her. We need your help to ensure these sweet girls receive the care and love they deserve.
