Many small dogs in the toy and miniature breeds suffer from a condition called Hemorrhagic Gastroenteritis or HGE. If this happens and your dog is untreated, it can begin passing blood through the bowels and die very quickly. After you have read this article, you will be able to determine if your dog suffers from this condition, and be able to possibly even save its life. Diagnosing this condition
is difficult. Most veterinarians diagnose the animal with Parvovirus before any testing is completed. Parvovirus has to be eliminated before treatment can be done. However, only a vet can complete the testing necessary to determine this condition. My dog Darwin passed away tragically Thursday (3/3/11) morning. He was a healthy young dog with no health problems. He was perfectly fine Tuesday, but things turned rapidly on Wednesday afternoon. After extensive research, I found out the cause of Darwin’s passing. He was infected with a bacterial infection called HGE (hemorrhagic gastroenteritis). This is a sever disease that is commonly overlooked by veterinarians. Vets will say your dog has Parvovirus as an easy diagnosis. My sister took Darwin to the vet back in September 2010 in which the vet said Darwin had a gastric intestinal infection but failed to tell us how to avoid it from happening again or signs to look for is it occurs again. After doing research, turns out Darwin has always had HGE since August but was overlooked by the vet. HGE is not curable and dogs can have reoccurring episodes. Vets do not talk about HE, but it is very common with small dogs. If the vet had properly informed my sister, Darwin would still be here with us. Please help spread the awareness and pass this information to anyone you know that has a dog. Please help save a life.
