🐾 Make a Difference in a Rescue Dog’s Life 🐾

At Believe in Dog, we believe that training saves lives. That’s why we created our Scholarship Fund—to provide much-needed training for rescue dogs and their people, helping keep more dogs out of shelters and in loving homes.

This fund was inspired by two incredible dogs, Mr. Hud and Hank Bennett, whose legacy guides our passion for building confidence, tackling leash reactivity, and breaking misconceptions about pitbulls.

- 🐶 Hud was a rescue who taught us how to help fearful dogs blossom into confident companions.
- 🐾 Hank, a stray pitbull mix, showed us the importance of understanding and managing leash reactivity.

These two amazing dogs taught us lessons that shape our mission every day. With every rescue dog we help, their legacy lives on.

Congratulations to our new Basic Manners Graduates!

This was a class full of young dogs. These young teenagers worked incredibly hard on impulse control, learning new skills, and most importantly, deepening their relationship with their parents.

Dog training is not linear. I wish it was. But these parents are putting in the hard work now to make big, long-term changes in the long run!

If your chosen trainer is certified through the CCPDT or IAABC, it is presumed they will not use harsh punishment techniques. Alas, there are indeed, certified trainers that will still throw a prong or shock collar on your dog pretty much immediately, and doing so is unethical and deceptive. No matter what kind of certification or education your chosen trainer has, don’t ever let anyone convince you to use any tool or technique with your dog that makes you feel uncomfortable.

Finally, here are just a few more things to watch out for when considering dog pros and certifications:

🚩They claim to be certified, but don’t clarify which certification. Do your research and look it up!
🚩They have been legitimately certified, but it has expired and their certification is no longer valid. It is extremely easy to find up to date certificants on the CCPDT and IAABC websites.
🚩They claim to be a “behaviorist”. Legitimate certified “animal behaviorists” or “veterinary behaviorists” require a Doctorate degree, along with a long list of other qualifications.
🚩Legitimate “Behavioral Consultants”, must be certified through the CCPDT or IAABC.
🚩Don’t trust quick fixes or guarantees.
🚩Don’t send your dog to a “board and train” just because you’re frustrated today. You simply must be heavily involved in the training of your dog, especially when it comes to behavior modification.

Congratulations to our newest trainer, Pedram, for becoming an official Certified Professional Dog Trainer - Knowledge Assessed, through the CCPDT.org!

And to Stephanie who met the recertification requirements for her Certified Professional Dog Trainer - Knowledge and Skills Assessed certification. (Stephanie was first certified in 2008! The CCPDT requires recertification every 3 years)
What is this certification and what does it mean exactly?!

Please bear with us. This is a bit long, but it’s very important for every dog owner that seeks out any kind of training for their dog.

First of all, is certification through the CCPDT perfect and the end all, be all? Of course not. Can people still lie, cheat, and disregard all the values this certification stands for? Yes they can, and they do.

If you weren’t aware, the dog training world has become exhaustingly polarized and contentious. So much so, The New York Times wrote an article about it:

Basically, it all boils down to whether to reward or punish. At BID, we don’t believe it’s always that simple. When working with sentient beings, there are many variables to consider. Training solutions and effective techniques for individual dogs is almost never clearly black or white. However, we do believe that causing pain, intimidation, or fear is never necessary. Our techniques and choices are based on almost 20 years of experience and education.
Sadly, the dog training industry is unregulated and any social media personality or average Joe on the street can claim to be a professional dog trainer, (or worse, a behaviorist) with no real qualifications, education, or experience.

At the very least, there must be some way to help the public distinguish and choose who they want working with their dog. Certifications help ensure that the person you’re hiring has key skills and knowledge.
The CCPDT and the IAABC require yearly continued education and recertification every three years to ensure certificants are up-to-date on the latest research and methods.

Our Doggie Fitness Graduates!! 🏅🏅

These teams spent the past 6 weeks working on their fitness 💪 The exercise increased in difficulty as the class went on and with the help of their amazing humans (and some yummy treats) the dogs were able to confidently take on all the challenges they faced while having a blast!!

This class can benefit a dog at every life stage! Young/ Adolescent dogs can improve their coordination, confidence, and mental focus while older dogs can work on their strength and balance 🐕
