Berg Foster Life is dedicated to match making and finding the perfect homes for our dogs. While we do occasionally take in others, that is not our focus at this time. We are located primarily in West Houston. We work to ensure that every match is the right match for the adopters and the animals. The adoption fee is $250 for dogs up to age 8 and then it’s $150 for senior dogs. The adoption fee incl

udes spay/neuter, deworming, age appropriate vaccines, microchip, and heartworm treatment if a dog is heartworm positive. Please be sure you complete an adoption application before inquiring about a specific animal so that we can best answer your questions and help find your perfect match. Often times we are asked why we limit the information about our dogs on posts. This is because it’s not about picking a dog off a social media post. We do occasionally put weights if we feel that’s something to consider, but again, even if you apply for a specific dog you saw, we do not guarantee you will be allowed to adopt that dog. The final decision on what dog is adopted is solely up to the rescue.

Adoption isn’t about breed, age, shedding, or potty training. Adopting a dog is about matching the right personality. We’ve had 4 month old puppies calmer and better behaved than 6 year old adults. There is no “breed standard” when it comes to rescue dogs.

We are about match making based on the lifestyle of the adopter and the personality of the dog. While we can’t remove the “which dog” question from our application, we don’t even look at the reasponse to that when we look at applications.

We ask that all adopters complete an application before inquiring about a specific dog because we don’t want someone coming to us with a closed mind set on a specific dog. We want open minded adopters ready to find the right dog based on our extensive experience with match making dogs. We ask our adotpers to trust the process.

Want to learn more about our rescue and find your match, please complete the online application: https://www.shelterluv.com/matchme/adopt/BERG/Dog

I was asked on my other post to talk about what decompression looks like. There really isn’t a simple answer for that since we are working with live animals and every animal is so different.

The most important advice I can give is listen to the dog. Let them dictate the timeline of events.

Below I will discuss some of the things I do with new dogs to help ensure a safe and successful transition. As I mentioned before, there is no one size fits all and you have to let the dog dictate it’s timeline. I am not a trainer. This information is simply based on the over 400 dogs that I have fostered.

For all new dogs I bring them home and immediately put them in a kennel (with the leash still attached and a portion of the leash outside of the kennel) with a puppy pad on the bottom. That’s it. Why not food and water you ask? Resource guarding. The last thing I want to do is place a bowl in a kennel with a new dog only to learn too late that I will not be able to remove the dog or the bowl from the kennel without risking a bite. Remember bites hurt the dogs more than they hurt us.

Then, I usually will leave them completely alone for several hours and just let them watch from the safety of a kennel. If they seem relaxed, I will go by and say hi. If they growl at me, I walk away. If I get a tail wag, I will ask if they want to come out. I will pick up the part of the leash that’s outside of the kennel and open the kennel door. If they stand up and walk out, we will try to walk outside. If they just lay there, I’ll give a gentle tug and again say “out”. If they don’t get up, then I close the kennel and we will try again later.

Then if they can walk on a leash. I’ll say “outside” and move towards the door. If they start trashing, we go back to “room” and plan to try again later. At that point I will put a water bowl in the kennel before putting the dog back in the kennel.

If they do ok on the leash we will walk outside. I will then take them to a water bowl I have setup outside for them. I will say “water”. I know it seems silly to use the words, but it gets them used to my voice and starts reinforcing the commands that I will use throughout the time I have them. Once they have had a chance to drink and maybe potty (many dogs don’t understand potty on a leash so they won’t always potty this first time. DO NOT DROP THE LEASH. You do not want to have to chase a scared dog back inside.) When we are ready to go back inside I say “inside” and we walk back in. We go right back to the kennel and I say “room” and gently encourage them to go back in.

That is usually it for day 1!

On day two we will start introducing food somewhat the same way. I will put a little bit of food in a bowl outside of the kennel while they are watching. I will gauge the reaction. If I see any kind of anxiety or growling, I know that I will need to take more advanced steps. If they seem calm or tail wagging, i will move the bowl away a decent way away from the kennel and we will again go through the process of coming out of the kennel on the leash and letting them sniff at the food bowl. I will slowly ease my shoe 👟 closer to the bowl to see if they react. If they do, then I pull up straight up on the leash to redirect attention away from the food but not pull towards me and then lead them away from the food bowl. NEVER EVER USE YOUR HANDS to touch a bowl! (Again if you have food agression issues please seek the direction of a trainer).

If they are don’t show any issues with food I let them munch on some food! Then depending on the dog, we will go outside to potty, back to the room if I sense anxiety, or we may try to hang out on the couch. Make sure that you still are using a leash on the dog if the dog seems at all shy or flinches from touch. You don’t want to have to chase and corner a scared dog, even in the house. Repeat this pattern for a few more days.

After a few trips outside to potty on leash, and they seem to be calm, you can drop the leash and monitor them. If you notice them excessively checking the fence line, they are looking for an escape route. First open the back door and use the inside command. If that does work, slowly and fairly quiet try to “herd” the dog towards the door. Use the “inside” command. You don’t want to chase the dog if you can help it. A scared dog will go under, over, or through a fence that seems secure. If you can recruit help, do that. The key is stay calm and patient.

By the end of that first week most dogs are starting to figure out your routine. I know it seems fast, but consistency really does help. Use the same verbal commands every time. If the dog shows signs of anxiety, slow down.

Remember many dogs will go 2-4 days without eating, drinking, or going to the bathroom. That’s ok. They won’t starve themselves. Give them time and space and they will come around.

Today, we picked up nine little Chihuahuas from BARC after they reached out to us about a group of 30 that recently came into the shelter. We headed over to meet them today, and with the help of one of our amazing fosters, we carefully chose eight who needed us the most. Our foster even picked a random ninth chi to make it an even bigger rescue effort!

These sweet pups are all scared right now, but we know with a little time, love, and patience, they’ll come out of their shells and show their true personalities. They’ll soon be ready to find their forever homes!

Stay tuned for updates as they begin their journey to trust and happiness. If you’ve ever thought about opening your home to a rescue dog, these little ones could be the perfect fit! 🐾💕

Update: his surgery is scheduled for Wednesday. The initial quote is $2000 so every penny helps.

🚨 Emergency Fundraiser for Gus the Chihuahua! 🚨

Our sweet little Gus tried to be Superman but ended up with a broken leg. This tiny, brave Chihuahua now faces a long road to recovery, and we need your help to give him the care he deserves.

Based on initial exams, our vet believes Gus will need orthopedic surgery to repair the damage. We have X-rays scheduled for Monday to confirm, but we’re preparing for what could be an extensive treatment plan to get him back on his paws.

💔 Gus has already been through so much, and we know his journey to healing won’t be easy. He was trapped on the streets with his friends and was so scared. He is such a happy little boy now. With your support, we can make sure he gets the best medical care and all the love he needs to get through this.

🐾 How you can help:

• Donate to Gus’s medical fund. Every dollar counts!
• Share this post with your friends and family to spread the word.
• Send positive thoughts and healing vibes to our little guy.

Your support means the world to Gus and to all of us working to give him a second chance at a happy, healthy life. Let’s show Gus that even the tiniest heroes can have the biggest teams cheering them on!

Donate now to help Gus become the strong little pup we know he can be!

Thank you for being a part of his rescue journey! 💖

Help Needed for Zube...a Stray Dog found with a Broken Leg 💔

We recently rescued a sweet stray female dog who was found with a severely broken leg. She is in urgent need of medical care, including X-rays and possibly even amputation. Despite everything she’s been through, she has a gentle and loving spirit, and we are determined to help her get the treatment she needs.

We are asking for donations to cover the cost of her vet bills, possible surgery, and ongoing care. Every donation, no matter the size, will help give this beautiful dog a chance at a pain-free life and a loving home.

Please consider donating and sharing her story to help her heal. Together, we can give her the second chance she deserves. ❤️🐾

Meet Masha! 🐾

Masha is a sweet female Schnauzer mix who needs a little extra time to warm up, but once she does, she’ll be your loyal companion. She’s still working on building her confidence, so she would thrive in a calm and quiet home. Masha does well with lower energy, more submissive dogs, and would prefer a home with adults or older kids who understand her need for a peaceful environment.

Masha is looking for an adopter, foster or foster-to-adopt home where she can continue to grow in confidence and feel safe. If you have a quiet space and a gentle heart, Masha could be the perfect fit for you!

**Adoption, Rescue Intake and Donation Plea: Give Ranger a Forever Home!**

Dear Friends and Animal Lovers,

Meet Ranger, a sweet and loving young male dog recently found on Buller Road in Waller County, Texas. This charming pup has instantly captured our hearts with his friendly nature and boundless energy. Ranger is great with kids and gets along wonderfully with other dogs, making him the perfect addition to any family!

Ranger's story is one of resilience. Despite the tough start he’s had, he’s full of love and hope for a brighter future. However, to ensure Ranger is healthy and ready for his forever home, he needs some vet care and daily essentials:

**Initial Vetting Costs: $200**
This includes vaccinations, medical check-ups, sterilization and any necessary treatments to ensure Ranger is in tip-top shape.

**Everyday Food: $5/day**
Monthly prevention $20

Your kindness and generosity can make a world of difference for Ranger. Whether you are able to contribute towards his vetting, provide food, or even open your home to adopt him, every bit helps in giving this sweet boy the life he deserves.

**How You Can Help:**
1. **Donate:** Any amount, big or small, will go directly towards Ranger's care.
2. **Adopt:** If you or someone you know is looking to welcome a new furry friend into their home, Ranger is ready to shower you with unconditional love.
3. **Share:** Spread the word about Ranger! The more people know about him, the better his chances of finding a loving home.
4. Intake: we would love to get Ranger and his siblings into a Rescue who can network for an adoptive family

Thank you for your kindness and support!

P.S. If you’re interested in adopting Ranger or have any questions, please reach out to us. Let’s work together to make sure Ranger finds the loving home he truly deserves!

Berg Foster Life continues to be a small breed Rescue but we strive to help out the quality individuals who do what they can to help as well

Meet Cordelia, the Wiggle-Butt Wonder!

Cordelia is a playful pup with a big heart. She is bummed she didn’t find her forever family at the last adoption event, but she knows they’re just out there waiting for her. Things Cordelia would like you to know: She absolutely adores kids and loves being around them, making her the perfect companion for family fun. Her favorite place to be is wherever her 6 week old human foster sister is, and she loves to make sure she’s okay when she hears her cry. Fetch is her favorite game—she could spend hours chasing down a dog you and always brings it back with enthusiasm.

Cordelia has her quirks, too. She’s never without her emotional support dog bed, dragging it everywhere she goes for a cozy spot to relax. She’s also quite the smarty, having taught herself how to use the doggy door, so she’s always ready for outdoor adventures.

When Cordelia sees you, her excitement is contagious, and her signature wiggle butt is the cutest thing ever! She also loves playing with other dogs, though she can get a little possessive over her toys at first—it’s all part of her charm.

Loyal and full of love, Cordelia is the perfect mix of playful and affectionate!
