Remember our two pups who were shot?

JoJo (now Frida) and her brother Napoleon are thriving in their forever home in Carson City, Nevada! Their amazing dads sent us this wonderful update, and we couldn’t be happier for them.

We love getting updates from our adopters—it truly makes our day! Keep them coming!

It was recently announced that the microchip company “Save This Life” has gone out of business and pets with these chips may not be reunited if scanned due to the registry being shut down. This is a good reminder to do a “chip check-up” on your pet to see if their registration is current. You can look up your pet’s microchip number at www.petmicrochiplookup.org. If you do not know your pet’s microchip number, your veterinarian can easily scan them at your next visit. You can register your pet with Homeagain, Avid ID, Petlink, and several other companies if you find that their registration is out of date.

8 Benefits to Spaying or Neutering Your Pet

8 Benefits to Spaying or Neutering Your Pet
1. Your female pet will live a longer, healthier life:spaying helps prevent uterine infections and breast cancer, which is fatal in about 50 percent of dogs and 90 percent of cats. Spaying your pet before her first heat offers the best protection from these diseases.
2. Neutering provides major health benefits for your male: besides preventing unwanted litters, neutering your male companion prevents testicular cancer.
3. Your spayed female won’t go into heat: while cycles can vary, female felines usually go into heat four to five days every three weeks during breeding season. Female dogs have heat cycles every 6 months. Their cycle lasts around 3 weeks and can attract male dogs to your house.
4. Your male dog won’t want to roam away from home: an intact male will do just about anything to find a mate! That includes digging his way under the fence and making like Houdini to escape from the house. Once he’s free to roam, he risks injury in traffic and fights with other males.
5. Your neutered male will be much better behaved:neutered cats and dogs focus their attention on their human families. On the other hand, unneutered dogs and cats may mark their territory by spraying strong-smelling urine all over the house. Early neutering can avoid aggressive behaviors as well.
6. Spaying or neutering will NOT make your pet fat:Don’t use that old excuse! Lack of exercise and overfeeding will cause your pet to pack on the extra pounds-not neutering. Your pet will remain fit and trim as long as you continue to provide exercise and monitor food intake.
7. It is cost-effective: The cost of your pet’s spay/neuter surgery is a lot less than the cost of having and caring for a litter.
8. Spaying and neutering helps fight pet overpopulation: Every year, millions of cats and dogs of all ages and breeds are euthanized or suffer as strays. These high numbers are the result of unplanned litters that could have been prevented by spaying or neutering.

WHY EVERY PET SHOULD BE MICROCHIPPED 🤔🥰

Millions of pets in the United States have microchips so they can be returned to their homes if they become lost. A collar and tag with your phone number may be the easiest way for you to be reunited with your pet, but collars can slip off — and a microchip can’t.
In celebration of National Microchipping Month, we’ve broken down the basics with these five facts about microchipping your pet.
1. Microchips help animal shelters return lost pets
Microchips are supposed to help lost pets reunite with their owners, but do they actually work? Yes!
In a 2009 study of 53 animal shelters, researchers at the Ohio State University found that dogs with microchips are 2.4 times more likely to be returned to their owners, and microchipped cats are a massive 21.4 times more likely. That’s a huge difference!
2. Microchips are about the size of a grain of rice
A microchip is a tiny chip in a glass cylinder. Using a needle, it’s implanted between a cat or dog’s shoulder blades. The process is similar to administering a vaccine — your pet doesn’t have to go through anesthesia and the process takes a few quick seconds.
Within 24 hours, the pet’s subcutaneous tissues will bond to the microchip, holding it in place. It’s very rare for a microchip to migrate to other parts of the body.
Microchipping is very safe. The British Small Veterinary Association keeps track of reports of adverse reactions to microchips, and since 1996, only 391 adverse reactions have been reported out of over four million microchipped animals.
3. Microchips contain a registration number
Microchips don’t store any information and can’t help you track your pet like a GPS might. Microchips don’t even have batteries! When a microchip scanner is passed over the pet, the microchip emits a frequency — the exact frequency depends on the brand. The scanner “reads” the number on the microchip. The shelter employee can then look up the microchip’s number in a database to get the owner’s contact information.
4. Microchips are built to last
Microchips are designed to last for 25 years, well over the average life expectancy for cats and dogs. This means that they will take care of your pet for their entire life.
It’s important to remember to update your contact information on the microchip’s registry if you move or get a new phone number. The Ohio State University study we mentioned reported that incorrect or disconnected phone numbers are the top reason a missing microchipped pet can’t be reunited with its owner.
5. Microchips aren’t just for cats and dogs
Cats and dogs are frequently microchipped, but other pets can get microchips too! Rabbits, horses, ferrets, llamas — all kinds of pets can be microchipped.
However, not all animals get microchips between their shoulder blades. Goats are microchipped on the underside of their tails or at the base of their ear, for example, and horses are microchipped on their necks.

So be sure to microchip your pet.
You just never know when they may get lost and need to find their way back to you.

Microchipping your pet is not expensive.
Look for Free Microchip Days in your local city. Your local animal shelter should also be able to help you. ❤️🐶

HOW CAN YOU HELP? ✨

Our adoptable pets are listed across the country thanks to our incredible 🎉 LOCATION SPONSORS! 🎉

Location Sponsors allow us to share our adoptable pets in different areas by providing their address for our private PetFinder listings. Their address isn’t public, but it helps connect potential adopters with our pups!

For example, let’s say Bill lives on 123 Main Street in San Francisco, CA. He says, “I’d LOVE to be a Location Sponsor for SPOT!” Since we don’t currently have one in San Fran, we say, “Heck yeah, Bill, thanks so much!” 🙌 Now, when someone searches for “adoptable dogs in San Francisco,” our dogs will appear—because we offer transportation! 🚐🐾

🦮 INTERESTED IN BECOMING A LOCATION SPONSOR?
Email us to see if there’s a need in your area! Have questions? We’d love to chat!

Prayers for CoCo! ❤️🐾

Sweet CoCo (formerly Patsy) has another lump that appeared. She previously had one cancerous lump removed, and we’re praying this one isn’t cancerous. 🙏🏼 She’s scheduled for surgery in one week to have it removed.

Her adopter fell in love with her at first sight and is absolutely devastated. Let’s all come together in prayer to bring him comfort and hope for good news. ❤️

Remember Buddy? Our tiny survivor has been through so much.

Buddy was left to wander the streets of Houston, Texas, where he was tragically hit by a car. Thankfully, stepped in and rushed him to our orthopedic surgeon for immediate surgery. His fractured back leg and pelvis were repaired, and he healed beautifully!

Buddy was adopted but sadly returned because he wasn’t given the time he needed to decompress in his new home. He needs a patient family who understands that he prefers slow introductions, doesn’t like to be startled, and appreciates knowing when someone is approaching.

This video shows just how comfortable and loving Buddy can be once he trusts you. He’s now back with his amazing foster family, but he’s still looking for his forever home.

At just two years old, Buddy is a resilient pup who deserves a second chance with someone who will accept his grumpy but lovable personality. He may have had a rough start, but we know he’ll make a wonderful companion in the right home.
