Glycerin - this is an important ingredient in many dog treats/medicines that empowered pet parents should learn about. It is used in homeopathics sometimes to preserve and emulsify the tinctures when one prefers not to use alcohol.
But there are several kinds of glycerins - some are implicated in deaths and illnesses of dogs and some are perfectly fine.

In 2012, some dog treats were implicated in numerous deaths and illnesses because they were made with a glycerin derived from a toxic plant called Jatropha. (You don't ever want this plant in a yard with animals. )

"...according to a recent article posted by msn.com, FDA documents obtained by the publisher suggest a possible link to three popular chicken jerky products and their big name producers:
Waggin’ Train Jerky Treats or Tenders (Nestle Purina)
Canyon Creek Ranch Jerky Treats or Tenders (Nestle Purina)
Milo’s Kitchen Home-Style Dog Treats (Del Monte Corp)
However, the FDA stated in its latest official bulletin:
“No specific products have been recalled because a definitive cause has not been determined”
But let's look at the misery it caused -

And why is Purina sourcing food ingredients from China?
Safer glycerins - We sometimes use organic, food grade glycerin to preserve or emulsify homeopathic tinctures used for our own dogs. Those are made from vegetable oils such as palm, soy, and coconut oils. But be aware that even food grade glycerins can be made from waste cooking oil that is separated into biodiesel and glycerin. Yuck.
Alcohol preserves them better, but dogs really shouldn't have alcohol. I don't mind it in tiny amounts like you see in Bach flower essences or some commercial homeopathics. You have to make a personal decision about whether this is okay for your dogs.
Alternatives - sometimes you see coconut oil (MCT) used.
