Meet Moby. He is a happy, silly, 10 month old pup who is so mellow, except……he has major melt downs if left alone, even for a few minutes😪. Here, we are training him to build relaxation/comfort associations with a mat that we will eventually leave out when left alone. Thanks to the help of Dr. Lore Haug and my colleague, Beth Brown (a separation anxiety specialist), he is learning to cope better, bit by bit, when he doesn’t have companionship. Being without humans is hard for him.
This is messy (and there are many baby steps before this point), but I only had a short time with my Grandson, Moby, in San Diego, so we moved quicker than people should to desensitize to the grooming process. We used a men’s electric razor and my daughter isn’t actually trimming the dog, just getting him used to the sounds and feel of a groom so he’s more comfortable and familiar with the process before the real deal. I thought I’d post it to at least get the word out that you should be preparing your pups for grooming. Otherwise it can be very stressful for them and the groomers. How you can train your dog while you work!
Meet Rex. He takes his job of watching over the neighborhood very seriously. This video is cute, but more importantly, it explains why we train the humane, scientific way. This dog knows that hand is shutting the blinds…..something he does not want. If we had taught the dog that we control him through pain, fear or punishment to get what we want, he could decide to break every bone in that hand to get what he wants. All respect to this dog who chooses patience and persistence. Sit Stay Obey - Training the Humane, Scientific Way. www.sitstayobeyacademy.com
Crate acclimation. Making them feel like they have a choice and it’s their decision to go in, makes all the difference, when starting the process. Be sure to watch the whole video to see how Zoey’s owner waits her out for quite some time the second time around. Wish I had made video of stage one, but here is stage 2.
Meet Zeus. Some days his owner is so tired after work and wants a little relaxation time, and Zeus wants and NEEDS to play. So, he barks and nips at his owner. Here’s a way to give a working breed pup the feeling of connection and fun when you’re exhausted. Note: the tray is a body (and couch) blocker to be used as a shield only… to help Zeus learn the boundaries of the game. Creativity for Canines: www.sitstayobeyacademy.com
Milton gets extremely scared of any new person or thing. Like most pups in 2020, he didn’t get a lot of socialization due to covid. He is getting desensitized by making positive associations with previous triggers and being taught relaxation activities. Milton is making so much progress. #trainhumane
A lot of graduation ceremonies were cancelled due to Covid but here’s a come back!
