This is Barbie about 2 minutes after I put her in her cage in the rescue room. Two minutes of freedom and all she wanted to do was flop over and take a nap. This position of laying on her side and her legs stretched out is an example of a rabbit that is relaxed and content in their surroundings. It warmed my heart and made me feel like I did something right today by helping this rabbit.

My rescue has been full for weeks - I now have 9 rabbits along with several other animals that I am responsible for. I have been turning people away daily and have a long waiting list for animal surrenders. However when Barbie’s owner sent me a message that she was living in their garage because his kids were “done with her”, I just couldn’t get her out of my head.

They brought her to me in a tiny box, which was soaked through with urine. The pet store told them she would be tiny and a “mini” lop rabbit, and they said she was bigger than they expected (she is probably about 3-4lbs right now).

This pet store failed this rabbit. This owner failed this rabbit.

Just because the kids were “done with her” doesn’t mean that she was a doll they could just throw into their garage and ignore. I was afraid that if I didn’t take her in today, they would have let her outside to fend for herself.

I’m going to give this sweet girl a few days to settle in and relax before I groom her. She will be spayed soon and hopefully will be able to find a forever home that will treat her like a member of the family, not like a discarded Barbie doll.

If anyone would like to help support Barbie and the other animals in the rescue while they wait for their forever homes you can find items that we use regularly on our Amazon wishlist or make a donation through cash app/paypal (smallnfurryrescue)

Our friends at Monmouth County SPCA have some adorable baby rats ready for their forever homes! We don’t currently have any baby rats for adoption at the rescue, so this would be a great place to adopt from if you are looking to add a rat to your mischief :)

People say to me all the time “I don’t know how you run a rescue, all of the situations and animals are just so sad!” Yeah, they are. Honestly over the years I have become somewhat numb to these situations and just try to look at the whole picture, I’m there for the animals and will help them in any way I can and in some cases that means educating people, in other cases that means intervening and taking the animals in to find them a better life.

I got this message this afternoon and just started to break down and cry in the middle of work.

It wasn’t that this animal was horribly neglected, or sick and dying. This is a FIVE MONTH OLD baby lop mix that someone bought from an exotic pet shop (who does not screen their buyers or educate them appropriately). Their kids decided they were”done” with a pet that they purchased as a family and the adults do not want to take the responsibility of caring for this pet for the next 10+ years of its life. I respect that they are trying to find a safe place for it to go, but really this whole situation could have been avoided if the pet shop did their job and educated this family about the commitment they were signing up for when purchasing this rabbit.

This rabbit (and 20+ others) is on my waiting list as I currently do not have the space or resources to take in any more rabbits at the moment, at least not until some of the 8 I have get adopted.

These are the cases that keep me going - I want to educate people that rabbits and other companion animals are not disposable play things for kids. I will say that I have and will still adopt out rabbits to families with kids, because they can make great pets for kids under the right circumstances.

I hope one day New Jersey will create legislation like NYC and ban the sale of small mammals in pet shops, because honestly they are usually the root of all of my surrenders.

I try to stay positive on this page but sometimes I just need to express my frustrations somehow, and I know my fellow rescue people will understand exactly how I’m feeling right now!

Some quick updates on the rescue’s current medical cases-

Marvelous Marge is doing well… marvelous! This rabbit is such a brave, gentle lady and has made so many improvements since arriving at the rescue. Thanks to everyone who donated socks and joint supplements her mobility is drastically improved. She was upgraded to a larger pen enclosure and is loving the extra room. Her wool is growing in very nicely and she is great for grooming. Although I selfishly would love to keep this sweet girl myself, I know her forever home is out there somewhere! Large Marge is a BIG lady, tipping the scale (literally she tipped over the scale I have) at around 12 lbs, she could still use to gain a little more weight (which we are working on now that she is building up her muscle again!). This calm lady would do great in any household that has rabbit experience and is comfortable with her grooming needs.

Elphaba our chinchilla that had her hind leg amputated over a week ago has made an excellent recovery. Her incision is healing beautifully and she is jumping around like nothing happened (although I am still restricting her activity some). I re-introduced her back to her daughter, Glinda, and the two were so happy to be back together. These two spunky girls are now ready for adoption! Elphaba may need a slightly modified enclosure with more climbing spots and ramps since she is slightly handicapped, but otherwise she will have no major restrictions. These two are still a bit shy but do tolerate handling and with the right home I think will do great!

We also have several other rabbits and exotic companion animals that need forever homes. The rescue cannot help any more rabbits until we get some of the ones that we have adopted out to their forever homes.

Gizmo’s only holiday wish - to find a forever home!

This handsome 5 year old chinchilla is still looking for his forever family. He is currently staying with our friends at CB Pet Market and is absolutely spoiled there. They report he loves to jump around his enclosure and chew on apple sticks.

Chinchillas can make excellent furry companions and are very silly and inquisitive pets. They have a few very unique qualities- including their extra soft fur. Chinchillas generally have a lifespan of about 15 years, so Gomez is still a young guy.

We had an exciting opportunity to help out a local veterinary nurse that is working on her schooling. She is part of a course that requires handling and basic husbandry for small exotic companion animals and asked us for help. We knew the perfect crew for the job. Petunia volunteered and was such a great patient, she got extra banana chips and snuggles after she went through a few tasks and showed the student how well behaved rabbits can be. Veterinary visits can be stressful, especially for exotic pets. I am excited to continue this program and help future veterinary nursing staff become more comfortable with handling exotic companion animals in a safe way. This program will be offered through my business, Small n Furry Creature Care LLC

Petunia is still in search of her forever home. This super calm, friendly girl would be perfect for any household looking to adopt a rabbit. She loves to be brushed and groomed and seeks out head pets and treats. At 8 years old she is considered a “senior” but she still has a lot of spring in her hops!

Elphaba is back at the rescue after her surgery and is doing great so far! Thanks to Dr. Baris with Jersey Shore animal Center/Clinic and her fantastic team (Carrie and Jess) for getting this special little chinchilla all fixed up. She reportedly jumped right up after anesthesia and started eating, just what we want for little rodents like her. She will have a few weeks of recovery and close monitoring before she can hopefully be re-bonded to her daughter, Glinda and the pair will be up for adoption.

Thank you to everyone who has donated towards Elphaba’s surgery cost. It was definitely an unexpected expense for the rescue but we are so fortunate that we have supporters who help us in emergencies like this. We are still hoping to raise an additional $300 to cover the cost of her surgery. Any amount is greatly appreciated :)

Today is and we hope that you will consider supporting our rescue efforts. We are so thankful to all of our adopters and supporters over the last year. We have saved over 200 animals this year and could not have done it without your generosity. Even just by sharing our social media posts you are giving our animals a voice.

Lots of things are going on behind the scenes at the rescue with many exciting changes hopefully coming in the new year. As we continue to grow support is always welcome in many ways, donations help us with not only the day to day cost of caring for all of the animals in the rescue, but unexpected costs like emergency veterinary expenses.

I’ve decided to name our little chinchilla with the broken leg Elphaba. She continues to do well and seems comfortable. Her leg is still splinted as we are trying to schedule her amputation surgery, as our vet thinks this will be the best option for her long term. The plan is to have the surgery done early next week, as long as she continues to do well. This surgery will be a very unexpected expense for the rescue, so we are asking for contributions to help offset the cost. Any amount is really appreciated!

Right now in the rescue we are caring for -
8 rabbits
3 chinchillas
1 guinea pig
10 fancy rats
3 leopard geckos
5 ball pythons
1 very silly kitten

All of these animals have very unique care needs and as a result we have to be prepared for anything. Currently I am going through about 10lbs of hay a week to make sure all of our rabbits and chinchillas are well fed. If anyone would like to send us a box of hay for the holidays, it will surely go to good use!

One of our chinchillas got into an accident last night and unfortunately broke her hind leg. Our vet is recommending amputation as the best treatment option for her. We are hoping to raise some funds to help with the unexpected cost of surgery. Any amount helps and is greatly appreciated!

This chinchilla arrived to us with her daughter and mate after their owners moved to a place that did not allow pets. They were kept in a small carrier for two weeks altogether during their owner's move. They came to us pretty underweight and scared, but after some much-needed TLC, they are doing quite well. This poor girl (who still needs a name!) will hopefully do well with an amputation as she is still very young and otherwise healthy.

We also are hoping to get help with naming this sweet girl. She is about 2 years old, very silly and active and pretty friendly. I haven’t had a chance to come up with a name, so I’d like her donors to choose. Comment your name suggestions and we will pick our favorite!

Funds can be sent directly to the vet (please message us for info)

Our smallest (curious George) and largest (Marvelous Marge) enjoying their own rabbit friendly version of a thanksgiving feast, a veggie platter with banana for desert.

These two are available for adoption and are looking for two very different unique homes.

Curious George has been with the rescue for about a year, he was hand raised as an orphan. As a result he has a bit of a sassy attitude and does not have the best manners. He will need an experienced rabbit savvy home that will respect that he enjoys cuddles and pets on his terms, but also likes his own space.

Marvelous Marge is healing up from her wounds and gaining weight and muscle back. She was a neglect case that was rescued by RBARI, and transferred to me. I have a special love for angoras and her story just called to me. Her feet are healing nicely thanks to our donors that supplied her with an ample wardrobe of socks! She is on a joint supplement and anti-inflammatory medication daily, which she will need for the rest of her life. As an angora she will need regular grooming and trims (she seems much happier with a shorter fur coat). At around 15lbs she is a very large rabbit, so she would benefit from being a free roaming companion in a home.

We also have several other rabbits in the rescue that are still looking for homes! With all of these rabbits comes a pretty hefty greens grocery bill and I am going through a 10lb bag of pellets every month. Not to mention all the hay- so much hay!

If you’d like to contribute to the rescue’s lettuce fund the rabbits would really appreciate it!

While you’re doing your Black Friday shopping, we’ve added some things to our Amazon wishlist that will be on sale and are our current essentials.

Thank you to everyone who has supported our little rescue over the last year, we have found homes for over 200 animals and saved a lot of lives! Generous donations are continuing to come in and I hope you all know how much they mean to us. Our rescue efforts would not be possible without all of your support.

Tonight we had to say goodbye to a very special member of the Small n Furry Rescue family.

Many of you who have been with us for a while know of Eloise and her story. She was surrendered to the rescue last year after a local worker saw her get tossed out of a car in Lakewood. Despite her rough start she was such a gentle, lovely rabbit. She ended up having some serious complications due to her spay procedure and had a longer recovery than most, but she pulled through. I loved this rabbit from day one - and she gave that love right back with all her silly antics and love for snuggles and ear scratches. She only had one bad behavior- she loved cat food. So of course she was not meant to live with me for forever, because she was not able to be a free roam rabbit with me like she deserved to be.

In February she was adopted by a wonderful couple who were looking for a silly, outgoing rabbit companion. I immediately knew Eloise was their perfect match. The day she went to her forever home her mom sent me videos of her binkying all over the house - it was one of the happiest days in in my rescue career that I will forever remember.

Eloise came by for a sleepover for the holiday weekend, and sadly I noticed some unusual breathing changes. I acted fast and called her mom and dad and we rushed her to my amazing vet. Sadly we found that she had an aggressive tumor that was compromising her breathing, and her family made the heart wrenching decision to say good by and let her go peacefully. I am honored that I was able to be there in her final moments and get to say my goodbyes.

Eloise will always be remembered and her legacy will live on through Small n Furry Rescue. I’m sure she’s doing crazy binky bunny hops over the rainbow bridge and eating all the cat food to her hearts delight. Rest easy sweet girl 💕🌈

Alright we need a really fun name for this handsome colossal sized fancy rat. He is a complete mush ball! He does need to go on a bit of a diet but he’s got a lot of extra skin. Tipping the scales at just over 2lbs, one of the largest rats I’ve ever had in the rescue.

Post your name suggestions in the comments. The most likes on a name wins!

Well that’s not a rabbit! Or is it a rabbit disguised as a kitten?

Meet Ivy, a super silly 3 month old calico tiger that is looking for a very special home!

Ivy was found wandering alone at a local warehouse. One of the workers ended up taking her home since they were not able to find her mom or any siblings. She was estimated to be about 4-5 weeks old at that time. The next morning the finder noticed that she was crashing and immediately brought her in to a local vet hospital. Thanks to the amazing vet and nursing staff she was saved from the brink of death due to critically low blood sugar (most likely due to something called “fading kitten syndrome”). The person who found Ivy became quite attached overnight, but they realized that her condition was something that required expert attention that they didn’t have the resources for. Fortunately that day I was working an extra shift and just so happen to be working on Ivy. I offered to take her into the rescue- and here she is almost 2 months later. Unfortunately about 2 weeks ago I noticed that she had a generalized seizure, completely random. My vet ran some bloodwork and did some tests that ruled out some things, but her condition is still a mystery. Thankfully she has not had another seizure since and I am monitoring her closely.

I do have to say that Ivy is what we call in the rescue world, a bit “wonky”. She doesn’t play like a normal kitten and she has terrible depth perception and tends to run into things when she gets exited. She is still a bit too young to confirm but I believe she is vision impaired, possibly blind. Despite this she gets around great and seems to be a very happy kitten.

Ivy will be with me for another month as she goes through antibiotic treatment. Her vet is treating her for possible infection just in case that is the cause of her vision issues and seizure. After that, I am hoping to find her a forever home. I think she would enjoy having a cat friend or two to keep her company, but she also loves her rabbit friends too!

Thanks to everyone who donated shoes for Marge! She is feeling much better already and her feet have made huge improvements. I am using a special barrier cream to aid in healing and she is also on antibiotics, along with much needed TLC. She has already gained over 200 grams in two weeks of being here, so she is loving all the extra food and TLC. She will still need some time to recover before I can start exercising her more to build up her muscle strength, but for now she is happy and feeling good!

Amazon doesn’t let me send thank you notes individually anymore, so I will thank you all here!

Thanks to Felicia Rose, Jessica Klockner, Kayla, Caitlyn, and Christie for sending Marge socks and Timothy hay! (She shared some of the hay and snacks with her friends- but boy does she eat a lot of hay!)

Ozzy has found his forever home!

There are just so many people to thank that were involved in this wonderful adoption.

First and foremost, his AMAZING foster mom. I met Ozzy’s foster mom through a mutual friend. Cavaliers are her favorites and she immediately offered to help him out when she saw his story. The plan at first was for her to adopt Ozzy, but her resident dog was not too thrilled with a new housemate, and Ozzy wasn’t happy with another dog either. It was clear that he needed to be in a home where he is the king of the castle. Ozzy’s foster mom did so much for him. Not only providing him with an extensive dental procedure to get rid of his diseased teeth, she made sure he was on a strict diet and with careful monitoring he lost a significant amount of weight while he was in foster (which was much needed, he was very chunky!).

Shoutout to the team at Bayshore Veterinary Hospital that made sure Ozzy was healthy and spoiled while his foster mom was working. Ozzy was able to get much needed socialization with people and all the extra TLC.

Thank you to everyone that donated towards his veterinary care along with his brother (who was also adopted and is doing fantastic!)

Thanks to all that hit the “share” button and posted his story around social media. His family found him through a cavalier centered page. Just goes to show that social media does have some real positive outcomes!

Last but not least, thank you to Ozzy’s forever family (his new mom pictured on the left) Thank you for giving him the home he deserves. It was love at first sight and he is absolutely spoiled! His new family is thrilled to have him and they said he settled right in and they are loving all of the time they’ve spent with him so far.

I really am so lucky that this worked out for both dogs- I say it all the time but this is the part of rescue work that truly keeps me going! 🐾

Large Marge has entered the building (and I’m not sure if she will ever leave 😉)

As soon as I heard this poor girl’s story- I immediately knew she belonged at Small n Furry Rescue. Thanks to our friend and supporter Jenn who volunteered to take the trip to pick her up and bring her to me! It was a huge help!

Marvelous Marge was confiscated from a neglect situation with several other rabbits. She was reported to be in a rough state, severely matted and had horrific sores on her feet. She has a tattoo in her ear, which makes me think she was probably bred by a rabbity for her fur or for breeding. Thanks to the wonderful team at Ramapo-Bergen Animal Refuge who got her cleaned up and spayed, she is now on the road to recovery.

She’s still a bit rough looking, and definitely needs a bit more grooming done, which I will work on once she gets settled in this weekend. Her calm demeanor is already showing and she immediately started to relax in her new setup (temporary housing- she will get a bigger pen once her feet heal up a bit more). She has severe sore hocks, which the shelter has been treating. I am going to be ordering her special socks to help with extra padding, and using a few remedies that I have found that work very well.

Marvelous Marge will not be available for adoption for some time until we can ensure she is over some of her more significant health issues. She’s an older lady and deserves the best. I’ve always had a special spot in my heart for giant angoras- my first rabbit as an adult was a gentle giant angora named Gus. He came to college with me and was my companion for several years. We’ll see how Marge settles in, she may end up a permanent resident ;)

If you’d like to send Marge some socks or padding for her sore feet, I’ve added some to our Amazon wishlist. We have 6 rabbits and 2 chinchillas at the rescue right now and are going through a TON of Timothy hay, which can also be sent via the wishlist.

Adoption success story - one of my favorites this year!!!

Every adoption is special, but there are just some that stand out and truly make me so proud of the work that I do. Running a rescue basically by myself can definitely be stressful. Success stories like this one are what keep me going.

Aphrodite was adopted by her dad in March, and she has been spoiled! Her dad really loves her and made a fantastic setup for her. A few months ago he reached out to me because he felt that Aphrodite was ready for a rabbit companion and he was ready to take on a second rabbit in his home. At the time I didn’t think that I had a rabbit that would match Aphrodite’s personality, so I kept on the lookout for the right fit.

Apollo, her brother, turns out was just that right match!!

Bonding rabbits can be tricky business, and sometimes it doesn’t always work out. Apollo was actually adopted by a really lovely family a few months ago to be a partner with a rabbit that they owned already. Unfortunately it wasn’t the right fit, so Apollo was returned to the rescue.

Fast forward to this weekend- I spent some time coaching Aphrodite’s dad about rabbit bonding - and we decided that we would try Apollo and Aphrodite together to see how they did. They both have very similar personalities,. I was a bit hesitant because a brother/sister combo doesn’t always work out. However in this case, it was meant to be!

They are still getting re-aquatinted but we are hopeful that this brother/sister duo will be best friends for life! Apollo and Aphrodite’s dad reassured me that he can tell them apart, but they look like twins to me ;)

What truly made this duo work I believe is that both rabbits are spayed and neutered. This one of the many examples of why it is SO important to spay and neuter house rabbits. It can help with their territorial behaviors, make the bonding process go more smoothly, and not to mention prevent any unwanted litters of babies (which Apollo and Aphrodite were originally from an “oops” litter situation).

Update - possible transport secured, thansk Jenn, one of our previous adopters for offering to help this fluffy gal catch a ride!🙂

Transport help needed!

Rampo - Bergen animal refuge has this gorgeous Giant Angora rabbit, aptly named “Large Marge” that I would love to get into the rescue for some TLC. She was in rough shape when they took her in from a bad situation. Fortunately the shelter is amazing and was able to get her all cleaned up, and now she is on the road to recovery. I have a special love for giant angoras, so when I heard this girl’s story I knew that small n furry was her place to go!

I’m looking for transport help - she’s currently at the shelter in Oakland, NJ and she needs to make her way to me in Howell, NJ. This can be done with 1-2 people if needed! Please send me a message if you’re able to help.

This is only possible because I had a very special adoption today and now have room for this big gal. Adoption post coming soon :)
