National Adopt a Rescue Rabbit Month

Today we are highlighting Marvelous Marge - a very special Giant Angora rabbit that was transferred to the rescue a few months ago from our friends at rampo- Bergen animal shelter. She was part of a large group of rabbits that were taken in from a less than ideal situation. Marge arrived to the shelter severely matted, underweight and with a severe case of pododermatitis, or sore hocks. I’ve always had a special love for angoras, and something about Marge just spoke to me. Thanks to an awesome volunteer she was transported to the rescue. Over the last couple of months Marge has made a beautiful recovery. She’s gained almost 2lbs, thanks to lots of TLC and special booties her sore feet have almost completely healed. She is an older gal and has some arthritis, but doesn’t stop her! She LOVES food and will do anything for treats. She’s a pretty calm rabbit and would do well in a home where she can get plenty of room to hop around. She does require regular grooming, but does well with it. Her adoption will include regular grooming appointments for life :)

If you are interested in adopting Marge or any of the other animals in our rescue please send me a message!

(As you can see - Marge doesn’t quite fit in the little rabbit beds we got, but she still likes to snuggle next to one!)

Rabbit fun fact - Rabbits are strictly herbivores. It is essential that they have fresh hay available to munch on at all times. Due to their sensitive GI tract, they must have some kind of “forage” to eat to keep their GI tract happy. In times of stress or illness their GI tract can slow down and stop working. This is commonly referred to as “GI stasis”. This can be life threatening in a rabbit and should be addressed with supportive care immediately. A rabbit that has not eaten or gone to the bathroom for more than 8-12 hours is concerning for stasis and should be evaluated by a rabbit savvy veterinarian to determine the cause.

National adopt a rescue rabbit month continues!

Today we are highlighting Forest, a s***ky young lion head mix. This sweet guy was surrendered to the rescue last month when I got a call that his owner was looking to surrender him urgently. They said that they got him from a friend who didn’t want him anymore. The owner thought he would be a good pet for their kids. However, when it came time to cleaning his cage, the kids wanted nothing to do with him. The family was having a party at the house the day after they called me, and said that they needed him out of their playroom asap. They told me that if I didn’t take him, they were just going to let him out “into the forest”.

There are so many things wrong with this story , but the biggest issue here is the possibility that this poor little domestic rabbit would have been dumped outside to fend for himself.

Yes rescues and shelters are always overwhelmed with the sheer number of homeless rabbits. I had to bump a few rabbits off my waiting list to take Forest into the rescue. He’s one of the lucky ones. Now he just needs to find his forever family. Forest would do great with a first time rabbit owner, or experienced bunny parent. He may do well with other rabbits if introduced correctly, and he gets along well with cats.

For more information about Forest, or any of the other animals we have in the rescue please send me a message!

Rabbit fact of the day - did you know that the eastern cottontail (our local wild rabbits) and the domestic house rabbit are technically 2 different species? The Eastern Cottontail is a species of rabbit native to the United States, while domestic house rabbits are descendants of wild rabbits from Europe. Eastern cottontails are strictly wild animals and should never be kept as pets. They are extremely fragile and skittish and do not do well in captivity. Domestic house rabbits on the other hand generally enjoy being cared for by people and make great companions.

National adopt a rescue rabbit month continues!

Today we are highlighting Ford, a chill young rabbit that was found abandoned at a local mechanic shop. He was spotted running around for over a week, fending off raccoons and other predators. This lucky guy was so tired when he was finally captured and brought to safety. It took a few months to get some good weight back on him and get his rough fur coat smoothed out, but now he’s like a new rabbit!

Ford is an aloof guy and would prefer to hang out and snack on treats than run around. He is a bit shy with new people but does warm up to head pets and ear scratches. He just had a full exam done with our vet, and although initially we thought he was a senior guy, he’s made such a great recovery that he is now estimated to be between 3-5 years old.

Ford may do well as a companion to another rabbit, but can be a bit skittish so will probably do best with an outgoing rabbit to get him out of his shell.

For more information on ford, please send us a message.

Today we are promoting Violet, a 2 year old Teddywidder rabbit, she is in search of a very special home.

Violet was surrendered to the rescue in May of 2024. She was part of a larger group of rabbits that we took in from less than ideal conditions. Her owner became overwhelmed with the number of rabbits she had after a few accidental litters. Violet came to us pretty disheveled, underweight, and with a pretty serious respiratory infection. Fortunately through a lot of TLC Violet has made some great improvements. She will unfortunately have some chronic respiratory issues, but she is well managed with medication when she needs it. She is superrr fluffy, and will need regularly grooming. Violet spent some time in a great foster home where she befriended the resident cats, and also seemed quite interested in the resident rabbit as well. We think she may do well in a home with other animals to keep her company. Violet is litter box trained and prefers to be roaming in a large pen type enclosure. This fluffy girl is all of 3lbs under all that fur!

Because of her chronic health concerns and grooming needs Violet MUST be adopted by an experienced rabbit owner.

If you are interested in learning more about Violet, please send me a message.

Rabbit fun fact -
Rabbits have 28 teeth that they have when they are born. Their teeth grow slowly over the course of their lifetime, which is why it is very important to provide them with good quality hay to help wear down their teeth as they chew. Rabbits should have annual veterinary exams performed by a rabbit savvy veterinarian who can assess the length of their teeth to make sure they do not need an adjustment. Certain breeds such as holland lops and Netherland dwarfs are more predisposed to dental disease.

February is National Adopt A Rescued Rabbit Month, one of our favorite months of the year!

To celebrate I will be posting one of our rabbits and highlighting them once per day. I’ll also be sharing a fun fact/care recommendation for house rabbits.

Meet Petunia - 8 year old Holland Lop

This spry senior lady is still in search of her forever home. She is lucky to have landed in one of our great foster homes and is getting some well deserved 1-on-1 attention. She was surrendered to the rescue in September of 2024 due to her owner developing severe allergies. Petunia is a pretty calm rabbit and is happy to be around people, but isn’t too fond of other rabbits or other pets, She would do best in a home environment where she can relax. She loves to be groomed and brushed, which is great because she does shed a lot! Petunia is litter box trained and would do great as a free roaming rabbit. She saw our vet and does have some minor arthritis symptoms but it doesn’t seem to bother her much.

For more information about Petunia or any of the other animals we have for adoption, please send me a message.

Rabbit Fact of the Day - The American Rabbit Breeders Association recognizes 49 different breeds of domestic rabbits in the US. The smallest breed is the Netherland Dwarf, averaging around 1.5-2.5lbs, while the largest is the Flemish Giant, which can weight 15-22lbs!

Update transport found, thanks Lisa!

Volunteer transport needed!

Our friends at Tenfly Nature Center would like to add to their Mischief of rats that they adopted from us last year, and they’d like to adopt two more of our rattie girls!

We are hoping to help find a volunteer or two to transport these two girls to their forever home, since it’s a bit of a drive for the nature center team. This can be done in more than one trip if needed!

What - 2 adorable female rats
When - timing flexible!
Where - Howell, Nj to Tenfly nature center (NJ)
Why - so these girls can become education ambassadors!

Please message me if you can help :)

Snuggle buddies wanted!

Ford and Violet love their snuggle beds. These special “rabbit beds” are one of our rabbits favorite enclosure accessories. They’re the perfect shape and allow for the best rabbit sploot!

Nothing compares to a forever home, but until these two fluffy rabbits are adopted these beds are great for relaxing.

Ford just saw our vet, and we were able to figure out that he is much younger than initially thought. He was in such rough shape when he was found hopping around a mechanic shop several months ago. Now that he’s put on some weight and lost a lot of his disheveled fur he is definitely showing his true age. Our vet estimates that he is between 3-4 years old. He got a clean bill of health and is now ready to hop into his forever home!

Violet our last Teddywidder rabbit from the neglect case in may of last year, was spayed today. She did great! She is resting and recovering and will be ready for her forever home soon. Violet is about 2 years old and has quite the sassy, mischievous personality. She’s getting along well with the cats in her foster home and even seems interested in the resident rabbit, so she may benefit from a rabbit friend :) Violet does have a chronic respiratory condition that may need to be treated periodically, but her sniffles doesn’t seem to stop her from her silly antics!

I’d love to give each one of our rabbits one of these beds. I’ve added several to our Amazon wishlist.

New Surrenders!

Carlisle - 6 year old male chinchilla. His owners felt he was not getting enough attention so they decided it was best for him to be rehomed. He’s a s***ky guy who LOVES his wheel and dust baths.

5 female rats - surrendered from an accidental litter. These girls are approximately 6-7 weeks old. They’re a little nervous and getting over a minor respiratory illness, so they’ll be available for adoption in about 2 weeks. They are a mix of double Rex/standard and have some pretty funky fur coats.

Raven and Hawk - this budgerigar duo was surrendered sadly because their elderly owner passed away. The family believes they are less than a year old. Both birds are very nervous, but hopefully will warm up with some extra socialization. They are a bonded pair and must be adopted together.

Some adorable creatures checking in from their foster homes!

I wouldn’t be able to do what I do without Fosters! They allow some of our more long term residents to get out and get some one on one attention.

Violet has been with the rescue since March. She is a 2 year old Teddywidder rabbit that was rescued from a neglectful situation. She is pure s***k! She LOVES to get into mischief and her foster mom reports that she is very smart at figuring out how to jump out of her xpen. She is friends with the resident cats. Due to her original situation she has a chronic respiratory condition. This doesn’t really bother her much but sometimes she needs antibiotics to help clear it up a bit. Violet would do best in an experienced rabbit-savvy home. Since she is a Teddywidder her fur is super soft, but definitely high maintenance! Whoever ends up adopting her will get free grooming sessions from me for life ;)

Petunia is our senior holland lop gal. She was surrendered several months ago due to her owner developing a severe allergy. She was well loved and cared for. She is a very calm rabbit but does have her moments of zoomies! Petunia would be a great addition to any home and is a very easygoing rabbit. She does have some mild arthritis but it does not seem to bother her one bit. Her foster mom reports that she is a lovely rabbit and has a very sweet and calm demeanor.

Stefan is a senior (10+) year old leopard gecko. He was surrendered a few months ago when his owner left for college. Stefan keeps to himself mostly but is a curious guy when it comes to meal time! He prefers to be hand fed and is a bit spoiled. He’s spending some time with one of our awesome fosters to help make sure he gets some extra TLC. He doesn’t mind being handled but he may be best with an experienced reptile owner due to his picky appetite.

For more information on adopting one of these adorable creatures please send me a message!

We always need Fosters. If you’re not ready to commit to adopting a particular pet, consider fostering for the rescue! All supplies will be provided and there is no long term commitment. Y

Look who got adopted today!!

Elphaba and Glinda our pair of chinchilla girls found their “yellow brick road” and got scooped up by the best family!

Thank you to everyone who donated to help with Elphaba’s leg amputation surgery. She made a full recovery and her new family said they couldn’t even tell that she was missing her leg as she was hopping around her cage. I am so excited for these two!

I told Marvelous Marge that it will be her turn to find a home soon (you can tell she was trying to photobomb this photo shoot 😆)

Meet the first surrenders of 2025

All of these animals are currently up for adoption and looking for their forever homes. They are currently located in Howell, NJ. Please send me a message if you are interested in learning more about them or adopting. Foster homes are also needed!

Nori- 5 year old female sugar glider. She recently lost her cage mate due to a battle with a serious illness. Nori’s owner knew the importance of her having sugar glider friends, so she was surrendered. Nori has not been handled much so she is afraid of people. She must be adopted into a home with other sugar gliders and an experienced family.

Tuna - 1 year old female Syrian hamster. Tuna was recently surrendered. Her owner took great care of her and she is very friendly and well socialized. She loves to burry her food and run in her wheel.

Scabbers - 3 year old male guinea pig. Scabbers recently lost his cage mate and his owner decided that they were not able to give him another friend. Scabbers is very social and sweet. He LOVES food and gets very excited for veggies. Scabbers may do well bonding with another young male guinea pig.

Forest - 4-6 month old male lionhead mix. Forest’s story unfortunately is not very unique. His owners purchased him as a pet for their kids. After realizing the commitment that was involved, they rehomed him to a friend. The friend also took Forest in expecting him to be an easy pet for young children. They had him for 3 weeks before deciding it was too much to deal with. They contacted me to surrender him last week. When I told the owners that I had a waiting list and may not be able to take him in for a few weeks, they said that if I didn’t take him they were “going to throw him in the forest”. Fearing for this little rabbit’s safety, I made room for him. He is very sweet and laid back for a young rabbit. He will need to be neutered still before he goes to his forever home.

Animals looking for a fresh start for the new year!

Rabbits
Petunia - gentle senior holland lop. Loves to be brushed and is a calm sweet rabbit

Violet - last of the teddywidder crew. She is s***ky and smart. She knows how to jump out of her pen and loves to explore.

Marvelous Marge - a super fluffy giant. Marge has done beautifully and is healed up and ready for her forever family. She would love to be a free roaming house rabbit.

Ford - quiet, reserved senior guy that was found wandering after being dumped at a car lot. He is a bit shy and keeps to himself. He’d love to find a quiet home where he can spend his golden years.

Arthur - new recently surrendered. He must have gotten into a scuffle or two with another rabbit, he’s missing some of his nostrils. He is still getting adjusted and will need some time to learn how to be a proper house bunny.

Reptiles

Myrtle - 3 year old ball python. Rescued from a neglect case last year, this lady has gained over 500 grams since arriving. She is a bit reserved but doesn’t mind being handled.

Hershey - 7 year old female leopard gecko. Doesn’t mind being handled, LOVES food and is a great hunter.

Stefan - 10+ year old leopard gecko. Left behind when his owner moved away. Prefers to be hand fed and is a bit particular about his insects. Has some minor MBD symptoms.

31/12/2024

Another year comes to an end at Small n Furry Rescue and I have happy tears in my eyes as I reflect on all of the lives that we’ve changed this year. Thank you to everyone who has continued to support my mission to save exotic companion animals; people who share and interact with the social media posts to donors and adopters, and especially Fosters! All of your support keeps me going and growing and I can’t wait to see what next year brings to the rescue.

Some notable cases this year (each animal that comes in is so important to me, but there are just a few that stand out in the crowd)

1. Lilo - the little brave ferret that came to the rescue with a broken leg and collapsed lung. She is doing amazing in her forever home thanks to a lot of your support to get the surgery she really needed to thrive. Her owner reports she is loving life wrestling with her brothers and sister and still gets into all kinds of mischief.

2. Curious George - this little rabbit was with me for over a year! He was hand raised from 4 days old. Even though he has a bit of a spicy attitudes his owner fell in love with him and adopted him last week. This one was super special, and bittersweet but I am so happy he is in a forever home.

3. Hope “Trash panda” - the baby ferret that was found in a bag tied to a dumpster. This one took a village of people to get her to safety and she is thriving!

4. The 5 teddywidder rabbits - back in may they came in as a neglect case. I am thrilled to announce that Daphne, Hyacinth and Colin found their forever homes! Violet is still waiting for her perfect match, but I’m sure she will find her home in the new year.

5. Cindy - the senior guinea pig with the reproductive tumor. She found an amazing family who brought her to a specialist and had her spayed. The tumor ended up being a benign mass, and the hope is that she will have a lot more time with her new family. They adopted 2 other guinea pigs from us too!

this list goes on and on (but I only have a certain amount of characters limit). ***223***animals found their forever homes this year. Have you adopted from the rescue? Please send us updates!

19/12/2024

This is Barbie about 2 minutes after I put her in her cage in the rescue room. Two minutes of freedom and all she wanted to do was flop over and take a nap. This position of laying on her side and her legs stretched out is an example of a rabbit that is relaxed and content in their surroundings. It warmed my heart and made me feel like I did something right today by helping this rabbit.

My rescue has been full for weeks - I now have 9 rabbits along with several other animals that I am responsible for. I have been turning people away daily and have a long waiting list for animal surrenders. However when Barbie’s owner sent me a message that she was living in their garage because his kids were “done with her”, I just couldn’t get her out of my head.

They brought her to me in a tiny box, which was soaked through with urine. The pet store told them she would be tiny and a “mini” lop rabbit, and they said she was bigger than they expected (she is probably about 3-4lbs right now).

This pet store failed this rabbit. This owner failed this rabbit.

Just because the kids were “done with her” doesn’t mean that she was a doll they could just throw into their garage and ignore. I was afraid that if I didn’t take her in today, they would have let her outside to fend for herself.

I’m going to give this sweet girl a few days to settle in and relax before I groom her. She will be spayed soon and hopefully will be able to find a forever home that will treat her like a member of the family, not like a discarded Barbie doll.

If anyone would like to help support Barbie and the other animals in the rescue while they wait for their forever homes you can find items that we use regularly on our Amazon wishlist or make a donation through cash app/paypal (smallnfurryrescue)
