‭‭But seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be added to you.
Matthew‬ ‭6:33‬ ‭ESV‬‬

In so many moments, God's grace and His faithfulness is evident. Just sitting in the presence of a horse whilst he rests in the warmth of the sun fills my soul with peace and reassurance of the goodness of God.

2020, when Sustained by Grace Equine was born, I vividly remember acknowledging that it would only be through God's grace that I'd be sustained along with my ponies. There are times in life where we have to take a leap of faith and trust that God will provide in each season. As of late, that provision has looked like rest and renewing of a vision He gave me so many years ago.

We may not know what the future holds or where God may take us, but one thing we can be sure of is that God fulfills His promises, and when we seek first the kingdom of God, our efforts are not in vain. Isaiah 55:11 says, "So shall My word be that goes forth from My mouth; It shall not return to Me void, But it shall accomplish what I please, And it shall prosper in the thing for which I sent it."

Looking forward to all the ways God's going to work through Sustained by Grace Equine in 2024!

The Fall season is here and lesson programs are set to start back up in September! 🍁

To kick things off, we will be doing an open house event this upcoming Tuesday, September 5th at 6pm. Anyone who'd like to hear about the heart and mission, meet the horses and tour the farm, or learn about the programs is welcome to join us!

I'll be demonstrating some of my work with the horses and will be sharing information on the core principles and ethics of my horsemanship coaching as well as the Fall calendar and opportunities for you to get involved in everyone going on at Sustained by Grace Equine.

By asking "WTF”, What’s The Function?, Dr. Susan Friedman is encouraging us to consider the underlying function or purpose of a particular behavior in order to better understand or work with it.

In behavior analysis, the term "function" refers to the purpose or intended effect of a behavior. In other words, it refers to why a behavior is being performed.

Understanding the function of a behavior is key in training and can be extremely helpful in addressing and resolving behavior issues.

Behavior is a key aspect of all living things on Earth. To change behavior we look at the antecedents (circumstances surrounding the behavior) and consequences (results of the behavior) of the behavior.

When looking at behavior, it's important to ask, "What is the Function?"

The function of a behavior can be determined by examining the consequences of the behavior. Dr. Friedman advocates for using the least intrusive method first when working to change behavior and to first have a look at the environment where the behavior happens.

When it comes to changing behavior, it's important to ask what the we want the animal to DO and instead of focusing on what we DON’T want them to do.

Have a look at her website: behaviorworks.org You’ll find loads of useful information!

Think in both our training and teaching asking this question was one of the more revolutionary things to bring our training forward , but more importantly: to understand our horses better 🙌

The 2023 Spring Season at Sustained by Grace Equine is here!

ALL programs, horsemanship lessons, and coaching will be starting back on February 6th, 2023, so make sure to check out the booking availability and get on the books. Now you can directly book through https://buff.ly/3JrSons .

The Spring Season is a 16 week session starting the first week of February and going through the end of May. Here are the programs currently being offered this season:

Freedom Reins Horse Club - A unique horsemanship program for homeschoolers ages 8+ where we explore different topics including general horse care and management, equine anatomy, equine behavior and training, trick training, husbandry skills, Biblical life and horsemanship applications, and more! (Thursdays 1-3pm)

Positive Ponies - A group for 3-6 year old pony lovers! The group facilitates a positive exposure to horses and introduction to the basics and safety for activities around horses. All of our programs promote positive interactions with horses where compassion is key in the relationship, but Positive Ponies will have even more focus on friendship and kindness.

Mentorship Program - This is a more close-knit program for those who are interested in furthering their understanding of positive reinforcement training with horses and other animals and exploring new levels (ages 12+). Mentoring and empowering the next generation is one of my core goals, so this is one of the avenues where my dedicated students will be able to gain more one-on-one mentorship.

Private lessons - Coaching tailored to your individual skill level and horsemanship goals. In 2023, students will have the opportunity to work towards some different competitive options to take their horsemanship skills to a new level, and private lessons are the way to truly acheive your goals. I now offer some packages with generous discounts, so keep that in mind.

As always, my heart for creating a positive change in the equestrian community and for empowering youth remains and I'm truly grateful to all who have gone out of their way to support my efforts. If there are financial constraints keeping you from enrolling your child in one of our programs, please reach out so we can chat about options. ❤️

Atlas has been gaining so much confidence lately and he did amazing with the girls today! Rachel was able to complete an entire pattern with cones and some ground poles. He seemed to be quite a bit interested in working with us today which made me so happy.

For a horse with such a depth of emotional trauma and fear, this kind of progress is incredible. I touched him for the first time the other day without him reacting. It's a journey, and I'm so glad he's here with us!

In positive reinforcement training, such as clicker training, you don’t use restraint or force to keep your horse around for the session. They do it because the learning is fun and they’re able to earn rewards. So keeping a barrier between the two of you is no problem, and actually has several benefits."

When training new behaviors or working on some higher energy behaviors, PC is one of my favorite ways to work! It gives my horses extra information and allows out training to go much smoother. With my students, working on protected contact helps them to build confidence as they develop better horsemanship skills.

Earlier this week, some of my students worked with the horses on free shaping as we talked about building a relationship with our horses without fear and force in the mix. PC has a beautiful way of taking force out of the equation because the horse has the ability to leave at any moment. In fact, at one point, Cash stopped suddenly and turned to go get a drink of water. He knew he didn't have to stick with us, and he left without any fear of consequences. Just like how I might ask my horse to wait a minute while I grab something, Cash requested that we put training on pause so that he could get a drink of water. Once he did, he came right back and was eager to train!

At the Positive Ponies class last Friday, this precious kiddo got to groom Luna and go on her first ever ride!

As we groomed, we chatted about how fun it would be to put bows or flowers in Luna's hair, and I mentioned that I have marigolds growing in the garden, so of course we had to get some flowers at the end of class and take them to Luna 🥰

Building positive connections with animals and finding joy in the smallest of things like picking your horse flowers can create an impact that lasts a lifetime. If you have a 3-6 year old, we'd love to have you join us on Mondays and/or Fridays, 10-11am for Positive Ponies!

We all know at least one pony-crazy little girl who dreams of petting, feeding, and grooming horses, riding off into the sunset on the most magical pony in the world. 🦄✨

Many of the most dedicated equestrians started their horse journey with that same dream. There's a beautiful connection so many equestrian aspire to have with horses, and I truly believe we need to facilitate more opportunities for the youngest members of our society to develop their love for horses in an environment where we don't distort their dreams of being best friends with horses.

Encouraging kids to begin to build lifelong skills from an early age is so important, and horses provide us with a unique atmosphere where we can learn such a multitude of skills. From physical exercise to mental problem-solving to life lessons about empathy and responsibility, equestrian activities can encompass so much!

Join us Mondays and Fridays from 10:00-11:00am for Positive Ponies group classes. Kids will learn about:

-Safety around horses
-Grooming
-Feeding
-Training some fun tricks
-Leadline riding
-Horse body language
-And more!

The Positive Ponies Fall 2022 session will run from September 19th-December 17th for a total of 12 weeks. The cost is $20 per session or $250 for the full 12 weeks. The monthly rate is $120 if you prefer to pay by the month. We have a small class size to maximize our time together and keep everything as safe as possible, so there are limited spaces. Message for more details.

It's been a minute since I've shared any updates here, but it sure has been a busy Summer so far! Although the heat has been keeping us from doing much training, we're doing what we can to stay cool.

The first week of June, our small but mighty team of horses helped out with a homestead camp where kids got to learn about all kinds of skills needed on a homestead. The horses were a major part of the fun we had all week, and they took such great care of the kiddos - most of the kids had never been around horses at all!

When working with animals, it's crucial to understand them as best as we can so that we can meet their needs and build strong relationships with them. The kids who join us here on the farm always get a healthy dose of information about caring for horses and understanding how horses live, learn, and communicate.

At SGE, we go beyond basic riding lessons and teach lessons that encompass much deeper concepts that can have a lifelong impact. Book a lesson today and join our mission here!
