Helping Paws Pet Haven, Inc.

Helping Paws Pet Haven, Inc. We are a limited admission 501 (c)3 cat rescue that takes in cats/kittens, mostly strays and gives them a chance at finding their forever homes. Thank you!

We are an all volunteer organization run solely on donations, adoptions and fundraisers. How We Began:

In the fall of 2001 we were living in the town of Huntington, IN, and started feeding a rough looking feral tomcat. We named him Ralph, and at the slightest squeak of the door k**b he would fly off of the porch and be gone. It took months to gain his trust, but he was so worth the wait! We were

unable to take him in the house so we created a nice space for him and moved him into the garage. Somewhere along the line we thought it would be a good idea to start a cat rescue. Crazy as it was, we did. We found a property, out on State Road 9, with a house for us, a building we could renovate to start a Rescue/Cattery and a barn for storage; so everyone moved, including Ralph. We had our first meeting December 15, 2002, and to our surprise people came! People that we didn’t even know came wanting to support us and be involved. We are fortunate to have some of those people still involved today. Another surprise, people gave money! Donations came in for us to start the non-profit, purchase supplies and get the rooms for the cats constructed. We opened our doors January 2003 to accept our first residents with Ralph greeting them with open paws. Like most rescues and shelters, that first year was tough and there have been a lot of changes since then. The renovated building turned Cattery, had a wood burner for heat. That meant purchasing wood, storing it and getting up during the night to keep it going! It also did not have water. We used a garden hose from the barn (with cold water) to wash litter boxes and bowls outside and we used milk jugs to carry water inside to fill bowls. Our first Banquet in October 2003 raised enough money to put in a furnace. The huge wood burner was sold. With that money we purchased a hot water heater and utility sink which were installed in a small room we had built for them in the barn. This is where we still wash litter boxes. A garage sale raised money to add the central air in 2004. In 2006, Ralph, with the help of two wonderful ladies, composed a letter asking for donations to have water installed into the cattery. I must say, getting hot water and a sink actually in the cattery was the best thing, next to getting rid of the wood burner, to be accomplished. I still thank you ladies very much! You don’t know how much you miss something or what an inconvenience it is until you don’t have it. Meanwhile, Ralph has stayed busy helping settle in any new residents and keeping control of his room. He really is a great cat and mascot. He knows he has a position and takes it very seriously. Ralph reminds me of John Travolta in Grease. He always has a group around him, the girls swoon over him and the guys want to be like him. There have been other changes big and small, but this was our beginning. We could never have done it, or continue to do it, without your help.

Good evening! We hope you had a great Monday. It was a rough start..... we reached today's high of 20 degrees before first breakfast! Was all downhill from there..... it is bitterly cold out, all of 12 degrees. This little cold snap is supposed to last 2 more days. Come on spring! In other mews.... we received THINGS! Lots of can food & treats. Thank you Barbara for always thinking of us! Bundle up if you are out & check on all outside pets! Please take in those you can. ❤️ Wyatt

If any friends in our area are able to help, please contact Joan. The typist & a few of our volunteers are going to be helping also care for the cats at Jamie's Legacy while Joan is recovering. This is going to be a big surgery & having the rescue covered will be a huge relief for her.

The Assistant feels so much guilt for not keeping up with regular posting and communication with you. She prays that you will look past her neglect and help us now, for our sake, not hers.

We are asking you to please forgive her. She has been battling so hard with her mental and physical health since we lost the Boss Man. So yes, she has not been posting like she used to, but please know, that no matter how bad she felt, there has not been one day that she has not taken care of us! We have always been, and are now, her only concern. But right now, she needs help caring for us!

The Assistant has ovarian cancer. She is having a very invasive surgery, called debulking, next Tuesday, January 21. She will be in the hospital for about a week and then on strict restrictions of no picking up, pushing or pulling anything for 8 - 12 weeks. Chemotherapy will start about 3 weeks after the surgery. These efforts will not cure her, but she is taking them to give her the extra time she needs to make sure we are all taken care of before she is gone.

Right now, her focus is on our physical care over the next 8 weeks. We need the help of about 8 more people to cover for her during that time. The commitment will need to be a minimum of 2 hours, one day per week. We know that 8 for a seven-day week sounds strange, but in actuality, to cover everything, 2 people will be needed every day.

Please, please, if you can help, for at least 2 hours, 1 day per week for about 8 - 10 weeks, we have never needed you more! We must have everyone lined up and scheduled by Saturday, with a orientation/training session on Sunday. You can PM us or call 260-388-2133 (leave a message and we will get back to you ASAP) if you can help us. ❤️ Josie & the gang

Hi friends! I'm staying in my house until spring! We started off the day at a balmy 7 degrees! Once it did warm up to about 20, it was pretty nice. No wind, lots of sunbeams & very quiet out. We are thankful to be inside. Most of us know how bad it is to try to survive outside in this weather. Our colony cats have lots of shelters around, they can get into the barn where there are more shelters & straw plus there are heated houses for them. But we worry for those who have to find their own shelters. Please make sure any outside pet has a place to get into & fresh water. These nights are brutal. We are dipping down to 13 degrees tonight, but next week are single digits again. Hurry up spring! On an up note.... the days are getting longer! Nite friends. ❤️ Tansy

Good evening dear friends and welcome to 2025!! It’s hard to believe that another year has ended and a new one ready to begin, but here we are. So many things happened this year… the good, the bad and the in between. We’ve had all of that. New cats have entered HPPH, long term residents have been adopted, tons of surgeries and vet visits, lost cats returned to their owners, lots of donations dropped off, much needed repairs done, emergencies of all kinds, throw in a fundraiser here and there and sadly a few cats have crossed the rainbow bridge…. And this was our year.

Denise and I received our approved business paperwork in November 2002 and officially opened to the public January 2003. We opened on a hope and a prayer that we would be able to make a difference in the lives of a few cats. Ralph was our inspiration…. There was no more room in our inn. Ralph became our mascot and CCO ( Cat Control Officer) and made a great impact on all who met him. He was truly a one of a kind cat, passing away July 31, 2014 at the age of 17. As soon as word got out that we were open, emails, phone calls and people poured in with cats in need. This has not stopped….. We opened before even having a place for the cats, other than a make shift room in our garage, because we needed to fund raise to be able to renovate the pole barn into the cattery. Room by room the cattery came together, the giant wood burner was sold and able to be replaced with a furnace with our first banquet, more fundraising for central air and we thought we finally made it when we were able to have plumbing for a sink inside the cattery! Later came an attached store room then more plumbing for a washer/dryer and restroom. It seems like just yesterday but again so long ago that we were outside washing dishes and litter boxes with a garden hose from the barn.

We cannot thank all of you enough for your support. Whether you have adopted, volunteer, fostered, dropped off donations, helped with fundraisers, collected donations or shared our posts…. We thank you, I thank you. We honestly could not do what we do without your support. There have been many ups and downs and wondering if we were going to be able to continue. Running a cattery is not easy and donations are sometimes scarce and of course the cost of things does not go down, but somehow we continue. With lots of prayers and your help we have been able to move on.

As we start 2025, we wish you all happiness, good health and love. Thank you for taking us into your heart and helping with our mission. Most of all... thank you for your friendship. Best wishes for a fabulous new year! ❤️ HPPH residents, volunteers, board members & Dawn ( typist)

Hi friends! "It was a dark & stormy night"..... just like this one, that the typist found me outside of the cattery last summer. It is a definite "small dog wind advisory " kind of night! It has rained ALL day. Temps are in the high 40s, so no freezing weather, but we are in the middle of a weeks worth of rain. Stay safe if you're out there! ❤️ Stormy ~ appropriately named

Good morning! Spunky has been missing for 2 months! Please share & message with any info. Bowertown is just outside of Huntington to the East. He is deeply missed by his family. ❤️

His name is spunky. He's got white paws and a white mark on his nose that almost looks like an hourglass. he's about 8 or 9 months old and has no collar or chip. He's friendly with humans but will be aggressive with dogs. he went missing from the bowerstown area.

Evening friends! So.... we heard that the fat man is coming soon so we are standing guard & on the lookout! We want to make sure he doesn't miss us. Mol We have all been very good this year..... well, with the exception of Wyatt. He's not always good. He likes to chase Oregon & Moxie & they don't appreciate it. So he may get coal in his stocking. It doesn't sound like we will have a white Christmas this year, but that's ok. Nite all! Wishing you a happy Christmas Eve Eve. ❤️ Poppy & Smokey ~ living their best Felv+ life

They are $10 & we can mail them, but will not get to you in time for Christmas.... but definitely in time to start the new year! You don't want to miss spending a year with me! Mol I'm one of the stars on the cover! ❤️ Oregon

Just hangin out... waiting on our Wednesday cleaning volunteer.... so I can run from her! Autumn's great, but I'm kind of a shy guy. And by shy, I mean I'd really prefer you not touch the furdo. I was a feral kitten from a "not the best situation " farm. The typist was doing some TNR work a couple years ago & since we were so young, hoped to find us inside homes. But the feralness runs deep in me. Though I like to people watch, I'm not interested in interacting with them much. They say that's ok, maybe in time I'll change my mind. Until then, they give me space, I have good food & water always available, a warm & clean place to live. That is all done with your help! Thank you for sharing our posts & donating. Have a good evening friends! ❤️ Antman ~ cutest "feral" guy around

We can't thank you enough! In memory of Betsy, her Century 21 Property Shoppe family hosted a food & litter drive & did not disappoint! Happy Caturday! This was our view this afternoon! We had 5 visitors in the back yard. We have them periodically, but never have we seen them just lay in the yard! How cool is that?! The typist was happy to think they felt comfortable & safe enough to just lay down in the yard. They were there for at least 30 minutes before venturing on. We had prime seats! Have a good evening! ❤️ Hawkeye & Allister
