We asked leading landscape architect and horticulturist Marian Boswall what her dream garden for hens would look like:

“It would have lots of places to shelter, to roost and to scratch about, with some grains and seeds left on the plants and insects to discover. A piece of dry earth to create a bath and plenty of little spots with shallow water to drink.

“My chickens are in a wild patch where they can eat wild chamomile and clover, as well as grass.

“They are sheltered by trees, thistles, nettles and cow parsley which they have an occasional peck at too. We have a very busy sparrow hawk and buzzard population so I have a large 10x10m enclosure for five hens with a netted roof to stop them becoming big bird food!”

As part of our commitment to be a force for good, we are proud to be transitioning to new, plastic-free packaging wherever possible across the Verm-X collection.

These lovely new pouches are made from 100% recyclable fibre-based materials, and inside you'll find the same tasty products made from pure, all-natural, active ingredients with absolutely no man-made chemicals.

Our packaging peanuts are also made from corn starch. These can be composted in your normal domestic waste without leaving a trace, further helping to reduce our environmental footprint.

Becoming a more sustainable business matters; plastic packaging in the UK accounts for nearly 70% of all plastic waste, creating harmful emissions from production and damaging our natural environment through pollution.

We are also committed to using organic ingredients in our products, reducing the energy and water we use in our production process, and working to provide educational resources about pharmaceutical resistance and responsible use.

All of these small steps help us to be kinder to animals, kinder to the environment. 🌱

There are so many chicken idioms that we use every day, like “don’t count your chickens before they hatch” or “the chicken’s come home to roost” or “ to take someone under your wing”, but our favorite is to be referred to as “a mother hen”. 🐓

The definition of mother hen is a person who assumes an overly protective maternal attitude.

Mother hens are so protective of their babies that you often cannot even see the chicks, as the hen puffs up and hides them beneath her feathers at night to ensure that not one single chick is taken from their brood.

Mother chickens have such strong maternal instincts that they will even look out for or even take on the children of other mothers when necessary. 🐥

According to National Geographic:

“People raised livestock throughout the Middle Ages, but usually only in small numbers on small areas of land. The practice of raising large herds of livestock on extensive grazing lands started in Spain and Portugal around 1000 CE. These early ranchers used methods still associated with ranching today, such as using horses for herding, round-ups, cattle drives, and branding.

“Ranching was only firmly established in the New World of the Americas. When the first Spanish explorers came to the Americas, they brought cattle and cattle-raising expertise with them. A variety of ranching traditions developed in the Americas, depending on the region the settlers came from and the characteristics of the land where they settled.”
