Another course in the books. I loved this class and if it comes around again and you want new strategies for muzzle training I highly recommend signing up! It is offered by Decisive Moment Pet Consulting through Karen Pryor Clicker Training. I’m told Nightmare is wrongly named and that’s why we earned this award.

2 years ago I lost my boy Moosh to his anxiety and behavior. It was not an easy decision and it was absolutely the best decision for him. As a behavior consultant, and a human who has been through this decision making process more than once, I can tell you it’s not easy. We don’t choose this for the animals we love because it’s easy, we choose it because it’s the right thing to do for our companion and the world around them. I’m not going to go into detail but if you’d like to talk more about it, please reach out. If you’re struggling with this decision for a companion in your life I’m also here to talk. No one can tell you what to do, including me, but I’ll tell you my stories. I’ll give you the facts about how hard it is to find unicorn homes for difficult dogs. I’m a judgement free zone. While I can’t sway you one way or another I’m here to support you in whatever you choose so you don’t feel like you have to make this decision alone. The best way to get rid of the stigma of behavioral euthanasia is to talk about it and to listen to others who have been there without judgement.

Muzzle training is a foundational skill that should be taught to all dogs.

Nightmare has no reason to wear a muzzle at this time besides for fun training purposes.

Your dog may never need a muzzle but what happens if they do and it isn’t trained? You could cause a negative association automatically and then you have to work harder to overturn those emotions.

Why not just add it to your training plan, it’s fun!

Return guests Hoagie and Hero(sighthounds) and Max enjoying our new enrichment item, courtesy of all the wind yesterday. Dogs pick their idea of enrichment but 5/6 dogs found this branch that fell into the yard pretty darn entertaining. The new smells of wildlife kept them busy and the boys of course loved a new place to hike their legs and then come back and check the p*e mail throughout the day.

8 year ago my dog, Chunk, had friends. Lots of them, she was relaxed and happy in a small daycare. 7 years ago things changed and she decided she had a problem with other dogs and men. 6 years ago she helped me graduate my dog training certification program with strangers and other dogs around. 5 years ago she did large events with lots of people and dogs and children around. 4 years ago she was on tv with other dogs and she loved playing with her “brother” Hunk. 3 years ago she loved doing programs for young kids and teenagers. Today, none of those things are true.

So here’s a reminder for our dog guardians struggling with their dogs. We have to accept that our dogs are going to change throughout their entire lives, sometimes for the better and sometimes they regress or get worse.

I was able to work with Chunk a ton after her initial diagnosis of globalized anxiety and fear aggression toward men and dogs. We did things I never thought she would be able to do over the years and we enjoyed every minute of it. Now she’s older, with a slew of health conditions and she doesn’t do things she used to and as her guardian it’s my duty to accept the things I can’t change for her. I also have to meet her where she is, which means I can’t expect Chunk to enjoy the things we used to do.

As a trainer it’s hard to realize I can’t fix every one of my dog’s sensitivities. As a guardian it’s hard to accept how much work I’ve put into her behavior every single day and realize that she’s her own creature and not some robot.

All this to say, if you’re struggling with your dog, I see you, I understand you and I empathize with you. Dog trainers and their dogs struggle too and it’s ok to stop trying to make your dog into something society wants them to be and meet them where they are, right now.

Do you have dogs that get into fights with each other? The first thing you should do is separate them completely for at least 72 hours. That’s right after a fight between dogs they should remain separate from each other for a MINIMUM of 3 days. Longer if possible, but 3 days gives your dogs each a good amount of time for their hormone levels to decrease. If you put your dogs right back together again it’s likely there will be a repeating loop of fight after fight and this can damage their relationship to a point that cannot be repaired. Of course you should call a qualified positive reinforcement trainer asap, but in the mean time SEPARATE. Need help finding a trainer? Just email us and we’re happy to refer you to the right places. This photo is just an example of keeping dogs separate but for fighting dogs I would have them separated by having another gate at the top of the stairs so they couldn’t touch noses and fight through the barrier. I would throw a sheet over one or both of those gates as well to prevent staring at each other. If you have dogs who push through barriers use kennels or separate rooms during this period of time. Another idea, ask a friend or family member if they can host one of your dogs for a few days if it’s safe to do so.

Shout out to our new followers! Since we have a ton, I wanted to take a minute to introduce myself. I’m Ali, the founder of I Got This SIT. I have 4 of my own dogs pictured here. Chunk is my 8yo am staff wearing the muzzle. Hunk is my 6yo am staff, he’s the other black one. The gray one is Sasha my 11yo am staff whippet mix. Nightmare is the malinois who is 1. My son Rogue is approaching a year and a half and he’s the most feral of them all. JellyBean is my long term foster dog, she’s the white one and she’s a deaf pittie mix who is basically part of the family since she’s been with us longer than the toddler, 2 years and 3 months to be exact. Until recently I had ferrets and a horse. I graduated from the Karen Pryor Academy in May 2018(wow, where have those 6 years gone). Since then I’ve done countless seminars, webinars and courses to continue my education. I’ve also earned my CTDI(certified trick dog instructor), my FDM(family dog mediator) and my CDBC(certified dog behavior consultant) titles along the years. I opened IGTS in December 2018 and began renting my first facility in May of 2019. At the first facility we were running board and train, day training and reactive rover classes and I gained so much hands on experience with a variety of dogs and their guardians. In 2022 we moved to Huntley and slowly cut our day training program. Our main focus now is offering behavior boarding which is, in short, a safe place for dogs who can’t succeed in traditional boarding to come. Mostly dogs with bite histories stay here and are kept as happy and stress free as possible. I also volunteer with 2 different animal organizations. One is the pittie rescue I foster JellyBean with, Chi-Town Pitties, Inc. and the other is The IAABC Foundation. I love training all sorts of things but what I’ve really acquired the most knowledge and skills for are trick training, reactivity and cooperative husbandry. So what can you find on our socials? We post welcomes of our new guests, updates on our returning pups, cute content of my dogs and tips and tricks to help you and your companions with a variety of skills. Thank you for following along and please check out www.igotthissit.com

The looks I get when I tell everyone staycation is over

How is our facility different from many other kennels?

Is it because we only have one person who handles the dogs, who is a certified behavior consultant and lives on the property?

Is it the fact that we’re tiny?

Is it because we can take dogs who can’t be boarded anywhere else due to being a bite risk or being high anxiety or very fearful?

Is it because each dog gets to choose what they most enjoy and set the tone for how they’re enriched during their stay?

While all of those things are great for our guests, the most important factor is our environment. Most people in this business think about being in high volume areas to attract the max amount of clients. We wanted to get far away from the hustle and bustle. Our super quiet property aids in the care of our dogs. Also note it’s quiet on the inside of our kennel as well. Ali spends a lot of time first making sure dogs needs are being met so they have the ability to be calm and rest but also spends time playing quiet in the kennel with our guests to ensure everyone has a peaceful stay.

Ali is officially on vacation until the 29th. If you need anything Laura will still be in the office so please don’t hesitate to direct any and all questions, scheduling, etc. over to her at [email protected]. Ali hasn’t had a day off since November and she’s looking very much forward to some days with just her dogs and her son. Thank you ❤️

If any facility you bring your dog to recommends or requires you to put your dog on a prong collar, don’t walk, RUN from that facility!

I don’t care if it’s your vet, daycare, groomer or some other professional making this recommendation. Chances are they are not a certified behavior professional and don’t have the qualifications to make this recommendation.

They may say it’s harmless but they are wrong. It can not only cause physical harm but also cause long term behavioral issues.

I don’t know about you, but I would not be willing to risk long term damage to my companion by advice given by someone unqualified to give that advice to begin with.

You wouldn’t let your family doctor perform brain surgery, would you? Same concept, they are in the medical profession, but they don’t know enough to cut into your brain.

There are plenty of other animal professionals out there who can accommodate your dog safely without the use of a prong collar.
