Been very busy with the bovine maternity ward the last week or so. But this storm created all kinds of chaos ๐Ÿ˜ฉ so babies needed feeding and mommas needed help finding their babies and all while the wind was blowing 30 to 40mph and snowing. So if there's a lack of pony content for a bit, the cows are to blame. ๐Ÿฎ

Girls got to go to pasture with Donkey and Dutch. Cows have their pasture til end of calving season. Joy loves it! Ivy is still on the fence about it. ;)

Ivy is trying to keep up with Joy and her pony zoomies! Ivy is, by nature, rather chill and a bit lazy, but Joy has other plans. I can watch from the front step as Joy will zoom from one grazing spot to the next, with Ivy reluctantly rushing after her to keep up. It's so fun to watch them!

Joy is in her element out to pasture! She is living her best pony life running through the hills! She's had training since we got her here off and on as weather permitted. Now it's time to just go be a pony and have some freedom til after calving is over in a month ish.

Been pretty busy here lately. Calving season is officially here and one thing that meant was to move horses around to make way for the bovine maternity ward. Aka..the pasture the boys were in. We moved Fox to the barn area with our senior citizen arabian gelding, Choco. And the girls went out to pasture with Dutch and Donkey. Fox was getting a little too aggressive with Donkey and for everyone's safety, they won't be pastured together anymore. He's now settled in and learning some boundary lessons from the old man horse.

This mare saw Brad working on his tractor and was demanding attention ๐Ÿคฃ she will pound on the gate panel in the morning if I don't get down there to see them on time too! I just love how much Fell Ponies love people ๐Ÿ’•

I don't know about everyone else, but these last few weeks have felt LONG. I know I'm so lucky to have Ivy in my life. She is my therapist and best friend all rolled up in this beautiful pony. ๐Ÿ’œ

The boys are doing well despite the bitter cold. Don't let the sunshine in this picture fool you! It was around -12F at the time of this picture. Feed bunks are frozen solid to the ground, ice in the tanks were thick, and my face feels frozen. How many more days til Spring? ๐Ÿ™ƒ๐Ÿฅด๐Ÿฅถ

This is, from what I know, Joy's first time wearing a winter blanket. Have we practiced this prior to today, nope. But, what we have been doing is slowly building confidence and trust with one another. It may seem 'fluffy bunny' type training, but when I work with Joy, if she gives me a definite 'NO' to something I'm asking, I don't make her do it. I try to find what holes in training I've done that makes her think that whatever I'm asking her to do will do her harm. We don't do all that sacking out stuff, we don't tie stuff to her and make her run for her life to 'desensitize' her. That sort of training method, in my opinion, is antiquated and there are so many more ways to make horses comfortable with new stimuli. So this morning, with subzero temps on the forecast, she got her first blanketing experience here. I had it folded up, asked her to target it with her nose, and she did gladly. She got a click and a treat for that. I asked her to allow me to position the blanket next to her shoulder, she did, so click and treat. I unfolded the blanket and slid it over her back and another click and treat. I watched her eye for a 'NO' that never happened. Did she have an ear on me the whole time, yes. But her eye never was buggy, her neck wasn't up in the air and tense, and she wasn't moving away from me at all. I did all of this with a calm energy and even though it was freezing and my hands weren't working super well, I didn't rush the process. Once I unhaltered her and let her free, she asked for another treat so I obliged gladly. There was no running around the pen afterward to run from the blanket on her body. She simply smelled her shoulder and nuzzled the blanket a bit to feel it and went back to eating her breakfast.
The Fell Pony breed is so beautifully tempered and I feel so grateful to be able to be around them daily. Joy's intelligence and willingness to try new things with me makes my heart so happy. She is definitely a special mare!
Sorry for the less than fabulous picture, my hands were frozen!

Everyone got blankets this morning. 20 below temps for a few nights mean if they are too cold they have more chance of health issues. They will drink less water if they are too cold. Less water intake is a colic risk and I'm paranoid, so blankets for everyone! Also, shivering means burning more calories and I just don't want them to suffer the cold. Both groups have barn access that they often choose not to use. Hope wherever you are, you're staying warm!

Yesterday I we could wear a t-shirt outside comfortably. Today it's raining and we have a bit of snow in the forecast tonight and tomorrow. It started raining as soon as we got blankets on. The girls went nuts running and playing in the rain. Love seeing them play together.
Choco, our senior arabian gets a blanket. He doesn't stay warm enough to sustain a good body temperature during storms...so blanket for him. And then there's Donkey. He hates any weather that isn't warm and sunny. He will pout and not eat, even though he has a barn. So he got a whole snow suit basically.
The Fells and my warmblood arab cross are fine without blankets. They have barns and lots of body condition and hair to keep them warm. Do they use the barns? Not usually, but when it gets super windy and snowy you'll see them finally go inside and wait out the storm.

Had a short ride this afternoon with Ivy. She was less than motivated, but really..same ๐Ÿคทโ€โ™€๏ธ We worked on consistent forward movement when asked. She tends to be a but stiff with her circles so we worked on moving her body around some salt blocks in the pen. Ended with some fetch training, because that stuff is her favorite. ๐Ÿ’œ

Ivy learns how to do liberty circles, or at least the beginning stages. We haven't gotten to play much lately so we learned a few behaviors and this is one of them.

I am not a trainer and have lots to learn myself, but I thought it would be fun to document Joy's journey. Also, if you want to see where the holes are in your own training, video your sessions. I am going to rewatch some Warwick Schiller videos and brush up on some of these exercises (and the foot work) in my living room. ๐Ÿ™ƒ

Part 2 of Joy's 1st training session
We are working on self regulating emotions and just standing still on a loose lead rope. She did amazing! She really is aware of my mental state, and that makes me really work on staying present myself.

Joy's 1st Training Session

Joy's 1st clicker training session today! I've been just letting her hang out and acclimate. But she is happy and the noises and smells don't bother her now at all. So we decided to do some training before the wind decided to blow this afternoon. She did amazing!

These are my girls, finally eating with each other and not bickering. I love the differences in them. Ivy has much thicker mane and tail and a bit more feathering (although this summer was hard on them and they broke off a bit). Joy's mane is thinner and her hair is a bit finer. They are about the same height. Joy is a bit more reactive and I suspect that will get less once we get further in her training. Ivy is lazy and reactions take energy she isn't willing to spend. ๐Ÿคฃ Ivy is much fuzzier as winter approaches and Joy has a fairly slick coat still. They both love attention and will fight for it. โค๏ธ It's hard to see in this picture, but Ivy has a shorter back than Joy. It isn't much but it's something I've noticed while grooming them and watching them with each other. I'm loving having two girls โค๏ธ

The girls are getting to know each other. Ivy is pretty jealous and guards me from Joy. They got to play and figure each other out today. I love that the first picture of them shows them matching stride. This was the first time they'd been in together and there was some chasing and squealing but nothing terrible.
