Miranda Allyn Horsemanship

Miranda Allyn Horsemanship Horsemanship with a natural touch for the casual rider to the western performance athlete. Is this for you? Well, ask yourself these questions. Guess What?!

I help people increase their confidence, communication, and leadership with their horses. I do this by providing horsemanship coaching that emphasizes simple fundamentals based on the natural psychology of the horse, that anyone can understand and apply to any horse. Do you find yourself wondering why your horse is sometimes slow at picking up what you’re trying to teach him, or maybe he’s not get

ting it at all? How many times do you find your mind wondering if there is something you’re missing that is holding you back from winning? What are the other people doing that you’re not? Are you afraid to admit that you’re actually a little scared of your horse at times and no matter how hard you try, “Cowboying Up” doesn’t work and you don’t know why? I get it, after 20+ years involved with horses, I’ve been at every one of these points a time or two. There is NOTHING wrong with you! But I know how to help! With a natural approach (thanks to a college degree in natural horsemanship) I’ve developed a horsemanship skillset that can greatly benefit anyone from the casual rider to the western performance athlete. I offer In-person Clinics, Virtual Coaching, Video Reviews, Zoom &/or Phone Calls! If you're interested in taking your horsemanship to the next level, I'd love to talk about how I can help!

Colic- the nasty C word with horses.😱

If you've been around horses long enough, you've very likely dealt with it.😣

I highly recommend giving a listen to this recent podcast by Phil Haugen where he interviews a vet on colic and wounds over joint
I learned a lot!

Here are a few surprising take aways 🤯

♦️ Don't give banamine until after you take their temperature! Banamine can mask a fever for several hours, and may hide pertaining info to the vet. Horses can't go to surgery with a fever from infection.

♦️They are coming out with microchips for horses that can also monitor temperature. Temperatures are the quickest way to determine a number of Illnesses coming on.

♦️Water intake is so crucial!

♦️There are so many little things that can help prevent colic.

♦️ There are numerous forms of colic!

Just do your horse a favor and give this episode a listen! It's 🔥!

One translation of Ephesians 3:20 says: "I will give you more than you asked for. You have to trust me and be patient."

I have to think that applies to horses, too.

Be patient. Trust the process. Trust your horse. Trust yourself.

And most importantly, trust in the timing of your success. Remember, our timelines are not our own to determine. Trust that all your hard work will be rewarded at exactly the right time.

Studies like this make me giggle.
Like duh, of course horses are super intelligent and know how to think things through & make decisions ahead of time.

Ask any trainer or horse owner with even a remote understanding of horse psychology & experience working with them and they could have told you this. 😅

“Horses have the ability to think and plan ahead and are far more intelligent than scientists previously thought, according to a Nottingham Trent University study that analysed the animal’s responses to a reward-based game.

“The horses cannily adapted their approach to the game to get the most treats – while making the least effort.

“Previously, research has suggested that horses simply respond to stimuli in the moment, they don’t proactively look ahead, think ahead and plan their actions – whereas our study shows that they do have an awareness of the consequences and outcomes of their actions,” said the lead researcher, Louise Evans.”

The actual research paper…

“Whoa, No-Go: Evidence consistent with model-based strategy use in horses during an inhibitory task”

Quotes by Clinton Anderson that a young trainer should live by and most of us learn the hard way:

1. “Work harder than anybody else. That’s the one thing that will beat talent.”
2. “Nobody respects your money like you do no matter how much you pay them or how much incentive they have.”
3. “An employee will do what you inspect, not expect.”
4. “It’s not a bit that’s severe in a horses mouth, it’s the hands behind it.”
5. “Frustration begins where knowledge ends.”
6. “If you’re getting bucked off in the first place, it’s because you’ve already failed. The fact that your c**t wants to buck tells me you haven’t done your homework.”
7. “It’s amazing what you can get done in 8 hours, if you actually work for 8 hours”
8. “You better pick somebody that loves what you’re doing because horses are a drug. It doesn’t wear off. And people that don’t have that drug, will never get that drug.”
9. “Make sure that customer walks away feeling like they got more than they paid for. “

Morning Office Views.

If I'm being real, i'm lucky to get up with enough time to make a cup of coffee (not drink it 😜) before the kids get up.

Today I had just enough time to make coffee and quickly send an email newsletter. I'll take that win. 🙌

I don't miss riding.
What I actually miss is training.

I miss pouring my heart & soul into connecting to my animals and watching their progress.

I miss the pride radiating through me when we have an unbelievable ride and I can sit back and say I did that!

But as I've been able to be around long enough to help others, it's been rewarding in a different way to see them making progress.

As you all know, I presented my first clinic in June. There was a rider there with a young, new horse that I didn't know prior.

They had a good time & made progress. We'll the other day they asked for a follow up lesson and the did awesome! Then their follow up ride on their own was just as great!

Watching other experience that feeling of actually training, sometimes for the first time, and seeing the team they become with their horse is so fulfilling too. ❤️🐎

Showman Tip Of The Day - INVEST in a NICE Cowboy Hat!

My biggest pet peeve is seeing people showing horses in fancy outfits that cost a lot of money only to be topped off with a $20 disheveled cowboy hat.

I am the queen of understanding what it's like not being able to afford custom outfits, buying used, and spending HOURS gluing on rhinestones. So don't come at me that you can't afford it.

Trust me, I'm telling you, your hat, not your show shirt, needs to be where you invest in your appearance first.

A nice hat can play up a more simple outfit all day long, whereas a junk hat can ruin even a thousand-dollar outfit every time.

Plus- you're likely going to outgrow that shirt in a year or two, whether it be size or style, but you WILL NOT outgrow your hat!

And if styles change, just get it reshaped!

A good quality hat will hold up for years. You're much better off investing your money in buying a couple different colors of quality cowboy hats, that can be used with a multitude of outfits for years to come.

Pictured is my Rodeo King- Chocolate, and I also have a black felt, white felt (a must for carrying an American flag), and a straw cowboy hat.

I've collected these over the years, and I know no matter what outfit I choose, I have a hat that will match perfectly and give me a professional & polished look.

How did setting big goals land me in the doctor's office? 🏨

I'll tell you how...

I was tired of feeling sick & tired. I'm talking ALWAYS exhausted & drained. 😴

Coffee did NOTHING anymore. ☕️🚫

How was I to present clinics & speeches for hours on end if I'm constantly exhausted. There's no way I'd have the stamina for that in the current state.

I also always felt blah & can't seem to kick these last few pounds of baby weight.

Fast forward to getting some bloodwork, identification #1 - my iron is low. 😳

Umm, hello, that explains a lot with the afternoon energy crashes.

I recently started focusing on healing my gut, taking pre&probiotics, tumeric & ginger for inflammation, and magnesium has been a life saver the past several months.

And let me tell you, I'm already feeling noticeably better in just a few weeks. 💪

It wasn't long when I started seeing a pattern. Hmm, sounds like all the things I've done for my horses & dogs over the years. 🐎🐕

So why is it that we are so slow to address the same issues in ourselves & don't prioritize taking ourselves to 'the vet'.

Had I not been trying to really push for my dreams that would require a higher level of physical & mental demands, I probably would have stayed in this blah plateau, accepting it as the new normal, and kept blaming it on kids being exhausting & getting poor sleep. (Which yes, that is a BIG factor, too)🏃‍♀️‍➡️🏃‍➡️

But we are WORTHY of more than that!

So this is your call to action that if you feel a little nagging voice in the back of your mind that you could be better or something doesn't feel right, treat yourself like your horse & call a doctor! 🫵

Exciting news- New Clinic Coming!

Join us October 5th for a half day clinic tailored to the intermediate rider looking to advance their horsemanship skills!

The first portion (approx. 3 hours) will be riding where we will be working on different exercises & maneuvers where the riders need help.

The last hour will be a potluck lunch where we will discuss tips & strategies for mental clarity & confidence building, and how to work towards goals when riding & showing.

I'm so excited for this clinic as it's really going to be my sweet spot.

The best part is, fully bedded stalls are available for participants' horses during the last portion.

Auditors welcome too!

Some examples of exercises we'll be working on: stops & backs, transitions, leads & diagonals, true collection, straight lines, circles, & rider body position.

Food for thought.

I've had the opportunity to work one some of the best trainers in the world & see the behind the scenes of many others at shows and I can promise you, horse trainers are one of the hardest working jobs out there.

Truck doors & headstalls don't mix 🤦‍♀️

This was my favorite headstall that I bought used over 20 years ago, and have put a LOT of miles in it on multiple horses.

I'm talking a lot of memories. If bridles could talk 😅

It would be an easy fix, and I will fix it, I just need a new buckle, and luckily we found a cheek piece that would work for tonight, but it got me thinking if maybe it's time to retire it & create a cool frame or include it in a shadow box or something. 😢

My friend suggested to retire it & get a new one with new exciting energy as a reward for how hard I'm pushing my myself to dream again & work towards my goals. 💪

But it does feel like saying bye to a trust old friend if I do hang it up.

I think I love that idea. What do you think?

Beautiful message

Beautiful message

There are a lot of training videos going around lately, and so many ways to improve your knowledge, but I want to say, it’s OK if your horses don’t work the way some do in the videos.

Often horses being used are “clean slates” they have been with trainers most of, or all of their riding life. They have only ever known the “correct” way to do things. So don’t get discouraged if that’s not how your horse started out, or how they look and feel when you try the exercise.

Keep trying to be better and keep trying to learn.

Understand that sometimes your horse may have physical limitations. Such as how they tie in (it’s going to be harder for a horse to work very collected if his head ties in high, versus one that ties in low.) How they are built in the hocks might determine how hard they can stop, or get under themselves.

Remember, it doesn’t have to be “perfect.” It’s more important that you have a horse who wants to attend class, than a horse who can’t wait for class to be over. Try not to pick on them too much striving for perfection.

If you’re 1% better everyday, in 100 days, that’s 100% better!
