Reggie has given me some much needed smiles and laughs the last few days. I love this old guy so much. Catnip has been the fountain of youth for him. He's looking forward to living it large at Auntie Stacy's while I'm on vacation. Once we get back home, I need to decide if we are adopting him or looking for a special home for him to retire in.
When we pulled Reggie, I figured he'd stay with me for the rest of his life, and I was completely okay with that. I can't adopt a healthy cat that someone else might want because I have a dog who would kill a cat, so if I keep a cat I'm relegating them to just a small portion of our house which isn't right or fair to them if someone else wants them and can have them be a full part of the household. But if there is a special cat that nobody else wants, and living in my bedroom is better than other outcomes for them (like euthanasia at the shelter), they can live out their life here with me.
When I decided to take Reggie home, we didn't know where he was at healthwise. He seemed in very rough shape and we didn't know if he'd be near death or very sick. Turns out that while he does have his medical quirks, right now he's actually doing amazing on the single med he takes. He's gaining weight and has a good appetite, he's bright and alert, absolutely adores getting attention, his fur is growing back (still no clue why someone shaved his poor back end 😂), and as you can see in the video, he's actually pretty lively when toys and catnip are involved. His recent bloodwork and urinalysis were okay, I would like to redo bloodwork in a couple months to see how he's doing.
I am smitten with Sir Reginald and if nobody else wants him, I will be honored to be his forever mom. It would take someone pretty awesome to want to adopt him given he's a senior (estimated 15 years old), he has a heart condition, takes a daily med for blood pressure, and also leaks a drop or two of urine here and there indiscriminately (otherwise he uses the box just fine). But I think if I've seen how amazing he is just the way he is, someone else might too. So if you're a fan of seniors, please consider adopting Reggie. Reach out to me if you're interested in meeting him. He really is a special guy.
