Starting a School Food Rescue: A Sustainable New Year’s Resolution
If sustainable impact is on your 2025 vision board, why not start a food rescue at your school?
Schools can play a huge role in reducing food waste and fighting hunger in Indiana. And starting a food rescue program is easier than you think!
Here’s how to do it:
🍎 Gain approval from your school administration.
🍎 Find an advisor (a teacher or staff member) to lead the program.
🍎 Create a student-led food rescue team to collect and track uneaten food.
🍎 Partner with a local food pantry for weekly pickups.
🍎 Reserve food storage space, like refrigerators, crates, and coolers.
🍎 Make your game plan for collecting, storing, counting, and advertising.
🍎 Make your local health department aware of your plan.
By rescuing unopened and untouched food, schools can help feed food-insecure families while keeping food waste out of landfills. Programs like these prevent methane emissions and make a huge environmental difference!
