Maverick and Henry took an adventure together to McCoy True Value Hardware and Just Ask Rental today! They both did great!

Henry can be a bit nervous about new things or people, so we took our time exploring.

Maverick was ALL ABOUT THE SMELLS!!! Dude had is nose in every bag's business! 🤣

If you are an experienced heeler owner, Maverick would be great for you!

If you don't mind some space and routines when meeting new people, Henry would love to be your man! 💜

Check out Kiya Koda Humane Society for more details on these two!

Sometimes you need a disguise when working on "human" intros! Note: I was not facing the dog, also this is a dog I have worked with before AND I'm on the other side of the fence. For this specific situation I was working with Kiya Koda Humane Society staff on how an intro with a specific dog would look like. To do so, I needed to look like someone he didn't know so he would have a more "true" reaction.

Even if the situation isn't "real" we still need to practice. If you have a dog who isn't the best at meeting new people let me know and we can talk about how training can help!

Too good to wait until morning:
I (literally) just finished my Fear Free Pets certification tonight!! 🥳

Not only did the certification program provide me with continuing education, which is crucial for professional dog trainers, but it certifies that I am taking the pledge to alleviate fear, anxiety, and stress with the animals I work with.

Being fear free certified means that I pledge to promote not only the physical, but also the emotional well-being of the pets I work with.

This certification does require continuing education hours, which means that I will have to continue to research and learn more over time to provide my clients and their pets with the most up-to-date scientific research on fear free training best practices.

I pledge to continue to be the best fear free trainer I can be for you and your pets! 💜

Preparing your dog for vet visits is usually overlooked by most dog owners (and even cat owners) but it is one of the most important parts of owning a dog.

Historically, vet visits have consisted of man handling dogs to get done what is needed quickly not caring about the emotional toll it has on them.

Even if you think your dog is 100% happy at the vet, I can almost guarantee that they aren't and have some amount of stress, fear, or anxiety while at the vet clinic.

Check out my latest podcast episode where I simplify how we can help our dogs enjoy the vet as much as they enjoy going on walks!

Ope! Not me creating a 3-3-3 rule for the humans! 🥰

We often talk about the "3-3-3" rule for your pet, mainly because most humans don't understand the transition the animals go through (both mentally and physically) is perfectly normal and end up taking them back to the shelter.

However, us humans are also going through a transition and I want you to know that the emotions you are having during that time are also NORMAL!

Park time!! 🌳

There are SO many new smells for our dogs to investigate at parks! Pete is reactive, so we typically stay at a park for 10-30 minutes, depending on the day. I let him lead and we will go sniff around absorbing as many new smells as we (well, mainly him) can!

So easy, and is a GREAT way to bring enrichment into your dog's life while also building their confidence and burning energy!

Pete absolutely LOVES sunbathing! ☀️ So, I make sure to schedule some time where I can sit outside with him while he bakes! 😂

Enrichment can be easier to plan when we base activities around things our dogs naturally like to do! I simply pair his baking time with something that is part of my personal self-care routine.

Remember, enrichment means to increase the quality of something. Sunbathing brings happiness to my dog, and if he's happier he is healthier!

I LOVE adding feeding games to my dog's routine! It is a fun way to add enrichmenht, burn some extra energy, and continue growing our bond, and continue growing my dog's confidence!

Enrichment - Let's break it down 👇

Definition: enhancing or improving the quality of something
(i.e. how can we enhance/improve the quality of our dogs' lives)

Adding enrichment to your dog's daily routine does not have to be difficult, but for many of us it can be overwhelming. Why is that?

🧐Well, for me it seems that many people are envisioning the intricate lickmats and topls that are created to perfection. While this is enrichment it is BY FAR not the only form of enrichment.

I'll be the first to admit that I don't put a lot of effort into the enrichment I create for my dog. I'm busy, and ain't nobody got time for demure lickmats! 😂

So, what are some things I do to add enrichment to my dog's life?
✔️Take my dog on car rides
✔️Hang out with him outside
✔️Feed him his meals with puzzles/games
✔️Trainging
✔️Go to a new park
✔️Go on a walk
✔️Give him new foods to try (dog safe)
✔️Lickmats/topls
✔️Snuggle with him
✔️Dance around the house with him
✔Give him chew bones/treats
✔️Bring home new toys
✔️Play tug
✔️Let him tear up cardboard/paper
✔️Let him sniff bird feathers I find around our yard
...seriously, the list is endless! So, how can you start today while keeping things simple?

Generally dogs like to sniff, lick, chew, tear, dig, play, etc. So think of ways you can help you dog do one or some of those items each day!

I personally found transitioning at least one meal time a day to feeding from a puzzle, toy, or playing a game has helped. I will also prep a variety of flavored frozen dog treats (using silicone trays) to pop into Kongs/West Paw toys.

Lastly, I think about things I can do outside with my dog! Sunshine is good for everyone's soul! ☀️

If you have stayed this long, drop a comment on what you are already doing, or what you think you can easily start doing with your dog!
