Little Elsa staying warm in the hay. We had several questions about why we handled her situation how we did so I’d like to address the most common ones (it’s gonna be a long one) 😊
To start with, we started in cattle with brangus. The kind you never had to bat an eye at nor worry about because we always knew they’d do their jobs perfectly and the calves would always do theirs. Transitioning to Brahman and especially exotics we quickly learned that wasn’t always the case. We’ve heavily culled over the last several years, selectively bred, and carefully picked what’s still left in our herd to boost and retain that brangus kind of vigor and maternal instincts. With the exception of 1 that we hoped would come around- which was this calf’s mother. It’s no secret, these exotics are EXPENSIVE to buy and expensive to own. Therefore functionality is something we refuse to ignore and make excuses for a lack thereof. One of those indicators or functionality is letting Mother Nature be Mother Nature after you know that calf has everything it needs to survive in all weather. So:
1. “You put her back outside when it was 20 degrees still the day she was born?” Yes. She was brought inside around 5:30am, fully warmed up and got a belly full of colostrum, our typical “jump start routine” and at 12:30pm put back with mom after we made sure she could walk up and nurse while her mom was in the chute, which she did perfectly. Past that, that is all a calf should need to survive even the coldest of cold days and nights. We did however keep her blanket on her for extra measure because yes they’re exotics and not all that adapted to this cold. She had shelter to block the wind, her mother, her blanket, a full belly before dark, and some shavings to bundle up into.
2. “You put her back with her mom?”: YES. Although her mom is set for the butcher due to her terrible demeanor and her barely present motherly instincts (past being dangerously aggressive over the calf) when it comes to newborns, she has 1 job and if she’s not going to do that 1 job there’s no sense in feeding her through the winter period. We knew she accepted the calf and after watching her calf milk her entirely down while she was confined in the chute that is all she should need to take it from there.

At the end of the day we’ve found what works for our operation and that’s just our own preference. There’s no real “better” way than another. Some people prefer to keep them from mom and keep them as a bottle calf, some don’t do anything at all and if the calf makes it then it makes it. Everyone has different thresholds for what they’re comfortable with when it comes to the cute little newborn calves. We have found for us that less has always ended up being more when it came to intervening and we’re just right in the middle of that spectrum. We lost several babies back starting out by taking them from a mom (always the first time heifers) that accepted them but maybe hadn’t figured out the rest, and trying this and that for days on end with bottles and tubing them over and over until we either ended up with a dead calf or a calf that no longer understood the cow is where they get milk not humans. Since we’ve shifted over to what you could say is the “tough but loving” approach where if we have to intervene at birth we will that 1 time in the first 5-6 hours of their life then after that they’re put back with mom and left alone. We praise god that since we have found our routine we’ve lost 0 calves and their moms get to be moms. So we keep our faith in god when trouble arises, we stick with our routine of the same stuff when we intervene, stick with the timeline and let nature be nature. Elsa is happy, spunky, nursing on her mom like a champ, and her mom’s still being her typical idiot self BUT raising her calf.

Trust me it’s always nerve wrecking even for us when we put any calf back out after assisting and having to wait especially that first night to see how things went. It’s always a sleepless night followed by a very early morning check up to see if the calf got with it. However when we stop to remind ourselves this is what so far has worked every time vs keeping the calf with us for days or permanently away from mom just to have them crash and many times die eventually. Do what works for your operation 🙂
