♦️Hey folks!♦️

As the snow is melting and prime riding season is upon us, here are a few things to keep in mind when it comes to your equine partner.

1) There are often underlying problems to your mount’s behavioral vices. Getting a yearly dental exam for your horses is an easy way to ensure their mouths are ready to slip a bit into, this riding season!

2) Equine dental issues do not always reveal themselves on the exterior of your horses. Your horse may be dealing with serious malocclusions without giving the owner any indication at all. The sooner the diagnosis, the better the outcome!

3) Even horses with picture perfect dentition have malocclusions that need correction. This is due to natural mastication patterns, and causes what are commonly referred to as ’sharp points’. These enamel points can often lead to tongue and cheek lesions, as well as inflammation and possible infection.

If your equine partners have not received a dental yet this riding season, contact me to get on my books!
I have limited openings left in April and am currently booking for May and June.

I know what you’re thinking...
It is not even close to snowfall season yet!

These Minnesota winters seem to creep up on us from time to time. So this is an early reminder that fall is a great time of the year to have a dental exam done on your equine partners. Going into our cold, MN winters, the most important thing for your equine is NUTRITION! 🌾

In order for your horse to get the maximum nutrient value out of their feed they must have a functional set of teeth! It is best to get a dental exam done prior to the frigid temperatures as a horse uses much of its energy gained from foraging to provide body heat. Dental exams prior to the winter months are especially important for our geriatric equine partners!

If you haven’t gotten your horse’s dental exam performed this year, it’s not too late!

Here is this week’s patient of the week, Vernon! Vern is a 14 year old quarter horse, gelding who is trained for showmanship, hunter under saddle, western pleasure, and the pattern classes. After two years of recovering from a ligament injury he was ready to get back to work. Vern’s owner had been noticing some abnormal behavior while under saddle and thought it may have to do with his teeth. Vern is the perfect example of a horse that requires routine dental work, even though he only had a slight malocclusion. We reduced his buccal and lingual enamel points and he was a much happier boy. A big thank you to his owner Brooke Ryan for giving me the opportunity to help Vern feel more comfortable with a bit in his mouth! Good luck with the rest of y’all’s season!
