Dear parents with dogs,

I love kids and adding them to the training session!

Last week I was able to start confidence building with Great Dane Daisy. Owners say Daisy has always appeared a bit fearful of anything or anyone new.

One of our first lessons always includes building teamwork by climbing on various surfaces. Daisy brought her little humans to this session so we amped up our confidence building with a giant game of the Floor is Lava!

I can't possibly list all the things that were learned in this session. But it's safe to say, everyone had fun!

Seeking or Searching Enrichment

Of course I saved the my favorite form of enrichment for last!

Seeking, searching, or hunting for treasures is often the enriching activity that will tire our dogs out the most, yet it takes a bit more time setting up. During the holidays we are all short on time! Things like snuffle boxes can be set up ahead of time where as Find It Games take more human interaction. If we have guests in our home, they can often be entertained with teaching them how to play Find It Games or Hide-n-Seek with our dogs which can be great if you need a few extra minutes in the kitchen and want your guest and dog to interact in a safe way.

I have lots of resources on the Yooper Paws Blog that can teach you how to build snuffle boxes and set up Find It Games. But one of the quickest ways to set up a seeking puzzle at Christmas is to wrap your dog's Christmas presents.

Unlike kids who want to unwrap their gifts all at once to see what they are, dogs might unwrap their gifts throughout the day. Perhaps they have a nice chew to unwrap Christmas morning to help the dogs be calm while everyone else unwraps gifts.

Then after the excitement is over and when wrapping paper is all over the house, you can grab a few scraps of paper and wrap the dog's breakfast kibble up into little wrapping paper snow balls. You can hide these throughout the house or fill an empty box with them. Most dogs will love shredding the paper to find their kibble.

Enrichment Digging

Digging is a hard one for us to duplicate and often we have worked hard at stopping our dog's digging up the flowers so we may not want to encourage this one unless it's a real passion for dogs.

For some dogs, digging up a blanket in the bed trying to get it just right so they can relax is very stress releasing. If your dog loves to do this nesting behavior, pull out the old blankets or towels and give them an extra fluffy place to lay.

If you live in a snowy climate like me, you may be able to bury a few treasures in the snow for your dog to dig up. To start with buried treasure should stick out a little bit and over time you can bury it deeper.

Azul loves to dig a whole and bury a treasure inside. Nearly every morning he buries 2-3 peanut butter cookies in the backyard, then goes back and moves them around the yard a few times before finally eating them. This helps to get something in his stomach early in the morning which prevents Azul from getting an upset stomach. He often refuses to eat breakfast unless he can hunt for it. Belle and I enjoy a good game of ball while Azul is enjoying digging and searching.

Azul has a special corner in the backyard where he can dig deeper if he wants to lay in a hole or bury a treasure to save for much later. I keep this dirt loose for him with my garden shovel. All other places he buries treasure is under a stick pile or gathered leaves or in the woods. He has learned not to dig where we walk and play.

Digging can be very enriching if we teach our dogs approved spots and not approved spots. Occasionally Azul tries to bury his cookie in the run zone for Belle's ball game and I need to tell him not there. Then he simply picks up his cookie and moves elsewhere. Training rules for when and where are really important if you are going to use do***ng for enrichment.

Enrichment Chewing

Chews are super common and there is a ton of controversy over what is safe for your dog to chew on. Rawhides although very cheap and easy to find are filled with chemicals that I don't want my dogs chewing on. Cooked bones are also off the list of items I let my dogs chew on.

My dogs typically get some extra large knuckle bones for Christmas as their big chew. No matter what you pick to give your dog to chew, there are a few ways to use that chew to add Calm to your Christmas.

If you are in a multi-dog household, keep chews up and out of the area while dogs are roaming to prevent any temptation to resource guard or fight over them.
Have your dog lay on a mat, blanket, or towel to chew on the prize. This reinforces calm on the mat. When your dog gets off the mat, the chew is removed and put up unless the dog is called back to the mat to reset the situation.

If I'm doing this with dogs that don't know the rules (stay on the mat) I will either place dogs in separate rooms with a door/gate barrier or use a human roadblock.

For example, Azul knows that we stay in our spot when enjoying a treasure, but when we introduced Belle into the family last year, she did not know how to stay on mat. We used either a physical barrier such as putting puppy Belle in her playpen or put her on a leash next to me, far away from Azul. Now Belle knows the rule and she typically lays on the couch to enjoy treasures and Azul prefers to chose one of 3 dog beds available.

This year Azul is getting a special Christmas surprise to chew on. And I think that might just earn me the title of Dog Mom of the Year in Azul's eyes!

(Pictures from when we were teaching Belle the boundary rules. She was to enjoy her treasure by me on the lounge, while Azul was free to move to his chosen spot on the porch.)

Ways to invite our dog to do stress relieving behaviors in enriching ways.

Lickmats are a great way to provide a stress reliever in a well timed way. Search the Yooper Paws Blog for the Holiday Cookbook for ideas of foods to spread on your lickmat.

Prepare a few mats ahead of time and pop them in the freezer. Then pull them out when you are doing something busy like wrapping/unwrapping presents with the family. You can have the dog go to their safe place (mat, crate, bedroom, where ever they are happy) and enjoy their treasure while you're distracted with holiday activities. If your dog doesn't like the frozen treat, you can pop in the microwave or pull it out 15 min before you are ready to give it to your dog.

If you don't have a lickmat, the kids poppers that can be found at the dollar store work wonderfully. You can also use pretty much anything in your kitchen; the spare lids that no longer match any bowls, cups that are the right size for your dog's snout and tongue, the disposable containers microwave meals come in, etc. Anything with ridges or multiple textures will slow your dog down a bit.

You can even spread wet food on to a plate and mash kibble on top then place it in the freezer over night for a special healthy breakfast on Christmas morning.

Azul and Belle are getting special balls that are designed to hold frozen treat balls inside for an extra lucky treat.

How can we use presents for our dogs to help create a Calm Christmas?

We know that most dogs have certain "loves" that also work to help them relax and reduce stress. While this varies from dog to dog there are some general things that apply to most dogs including chewing, licking, digging, and seeking (hunting). Stressed dogs will often do these things on their own perhaps chewing on the couch or raiding the trash while we are distracted in the other room.

If we let our dogs find their own stress relief, it will likely add to our stress when they choose something we didn't approve of.

But we can plan a few things to put in their stocking or under the tree to help them relieve stress.

We want our stress relieving efforts to also be enriching for dogs so that it will help use up some mental energy.

Check out the Yooper Paws Blog on Understanding Enrichment to help determine what your dog might love for Christmas.

Tonight was the last Bow Wows & Books of 2024!

To celebrate all the dogs hung out in the same room so readers were able to read to all 4 dogs. These 4 dogs are all friends who haven't seen much of each other lately. It was good practice to relax near their friends with only brief greetings.

We are looking forward to seeing all our reading friends next year!

Does anyone want to join me in a Christmas Enrichment Puzzle Exchange for Dogs?

The puzzle should be made in a cardboard box using materials from the recycle bin and 1 or 2 used toys or other items from your dog. You will not be getting your box back so don't put anything of value inside.

Once items are gathered, add a couple of hidden treats inside the puzzle & pour about 1 cup of your dog's kibble in the box so it bounces in and around the supplies in the box. (Click through the photo descriptions for more packing info.)

You would bring your box to the Training Center and pick up a random box that is there.

Who wants to join me in spreading a bit of Christmas cheer to our dogs for the holiday.

Create Calm Connections with your dog this holiday season.

Belle had a busy day helping me in new environments but she did really well!

We started out with a sniff-a-bout around the small parking lot. Belle thinks tires smell amazing and she was able to greet a staff person on their way to work.

Then it was into the Physical Therapy building where we checked in and tucked under a chair. The waiting room was empty so we stopped for a Christmas tree picture. As we waited the room slowly filled up. Watching people come in doors without barking is a struggle for Belle. Today she did 1 very quiet growl the first time the door opened, but she did great after that. Then we went back into a private room for PT. I set up for success with a long lasting chew that I didn't give her until I was about to lay down on the table.

After PT we went to the hospital for blood work where again we hung out in the lobby a bit waiting and watching people move around us. Again we stopped for a Christmas tree picture and practiced some heelwork as this waiting room was empty too.

Then Walmart for a return and more dog treats.

You'd think Belle would be tired when we got home, but nope she's been wanting to play ball.

Yooper Paws of Love!

Providing positive training for your 4 legged friends!

I would like to introduce myself to the communities of Vulcan, Norway, and Iron Mountain. My family recently relocated to the area a little over a year ago and I am currently training a puppy to be my Service Dog. I’m always looking for businesses, groups, and organizations that are willing to help me with public access training and in return I can offer training to your staff or group about working animals including service dogs, therapy dogs and ESA’s.

Meet Azul

The current puppy that I am training to be a Service Dog is Azul, a Husky/German Shepherd puppy. I’ve been working with him since he was 6 weeks old. The first few weeks were all about developing a bond with each other and learning how to read each other. Then we spent a whole ton of time working on creating great experiences for Azul during his critical socialization period. And we are just starting our formal training that will lead to becoming a Service Dog to provide medical alert & response.
